Glad you mentioned the VSX headphones, bought them a while ago and use them everyday! Once you have a good workflow and know which room is good to spot low-ends, harshness etc, it's a gem when you produce in the living room! Love your content Boss!

Great video, totally agree about the VSX, you need to spend a good week to adjust your ears to their phase(its like looking through binoculars and adjusting your sight), then listen to your fav tracks and find the room you like. Having bought a ton of headphones over the years, I can confidently say the VSX are a game changer. But there is a learning curve for it. The Beyerdynamics are a solid choice too.

Thank you. I’ve learned so much from you over past couple of years and I’ve purchased gear and plugins based on your videos and recommendations. The Baby Audio plugins continue to be one of my favorites. I am using Focal Pro headphones with an Apollo Twin interface for the initial mix. I then use the Slate VSX to get idea of how it is going to sound on other devices. FYI, it is my option that you do not need a headphone amp if you’re using that Apollo.

I have the Philips SHP9500s and I love them for producing/mixing, but they bleed pretty bad sometimes when recording. I want to get the AT M40Xs soon. I tried them at guitar center and actually preferred them to the M50Xs.

Great video, thank you! Also want to add about the VSX: Steven has mentioned when traveling that he uses his VSX with an Apogee Groove. There's something to be said about traveling or going out with a compact quality DAC if you don't need an audio input for a microphone. I also have a Groove I use with VSX and it's definitely a bump up over the built-in DAC in my M3 Macbook, particularly in the soundstage.

Focal for Hi-Fi has gone downhill over the years but on the pro side of things they are mesmerizing. The Alpha Evo Twins are an absolute kill in their price range and I completely believe they are the very best option available on the market for that price

One of your best, Austin. I love that you keeps saying "there's no right or wrong" because that is opposite what the majority of KZbin production "experts" say. I'm using my DT990Pros and VSX much the same way you do and I'm wondering how big a step up in quality and accuracy the 1990 Pros are. I have around $500 in "found" money and maybe it's worth jumping up to the 1990s. What d'ya think? Thanks!

What's best for sub and low? Would headphones help any? Funny I used to use my expedition with subs inside but don't have it anymore. Now I'm over doing it and mixes be too muddy/subby. Any help? Thanks for sharing!! 😁👍

Great video as usual. I use the DT990 250ohms for producing and mixing and have a DT770 pair for tracking. The open back headphones get less warm on your head which is nice especially if you are wearing them a lot. The bleed also lets your family get your attention which is mostly a pro 🙃 Sound quality for tracking isn’t that big of a deal (at least to me) so that might be a place to save some money.

Look, I’m 2sec in the video but I recently bought the Neumann NDH30 because you once said they were amazing, and I couldn’t be more happy I did. I had the DT770 pro 80 ohms before and the midrange basically feels non-existent compared to these. It’s like I’m discovering what midrange is after years of making music
@MakePopMusic12 күн бұрын
Yeadh DT770s are SUPER scooped and very bright. The Neumanns are super mid heavy and quite dark. They're about as opposite as you can get!
@dehavior12 күн бұрын
To anyone who’s considering upgrading their headphones, I’d also add that the NDH30 are doing wonders in terms of ear fatigue. The DT770 sound so harsh in comparison, and I’ve had way less tinnitus issues lately thanks to both their open-back nature and the fact that they are less bright that their Beyerdynamic counterpart. Really a game changer when you’re at it for hours
@MakePopMusic12 күн бұрын
@@dehavior Yeah I can be in the Neumanns an entire day
@MakePopMusic12 күн бұрын
@@dehavior I will say that the 770 to the NDH30 isn't a fair comparison. You're comparing budget tier closed backs with mid tier open backs. The DT1990 Pro Mk 2s are the direct comparison and they're MUCH more easy to work on than 770s. They definitely still have the Beyerdynamic sound signature of having more controlled mids and extended top end, but they're way less fatiguing than something like a 770.
@dehavior12 күн бұрын
@@MakePopMusic Oh, definitely, I couldn’t agree more on that. I was only doing the comparison for upgrading purposes. I hesitated a lot with the DT1990 Pro MK2, but I ended up picking the Neumann because I figured they would best fit my needs. I’m sure the points I’ve listed could apply to the DT1990 Pro MK2 as well, it’s juste that I haven’t been able to test them personally. If you don’t have the money to go for the NDH30, the DT770 are just fine. But for someone who has the budget and is considering upgrading their headphones, I’d say the improvements are worth the price delta (which probably remains true for the DT1990 Pro MK2)

JDS labs atom is an excellent headphone amp for around $100. It makes a difference with prosumer interfaces like UAD and RME in my experience. Not 100% necessary but it's worth that if you're mixing on headphones.

i did not expect buying headphones to be that difficult lol 😂someone could've warned me that there's pretty a much a full semester of science behind them
@tihomir75 күн бұрын
You're always making great and helpfull videos. There is one little mistake here, probably you were in hurry reading third party headphone amps. UAD OX is not a headphone amp. Even it's headphone output is just to listen to your guitar when playing at night. Don't thake that as criticism because you're doing great job even for some of us professionals and thank you for that
@MakePopMusic5 күн бұрын

I thought lower Ohm meant the headphones need less power? Meaning you should buy 80 Ohm instead of 250 if you for example plug your headphones right into the laptop.

I'd never known there is a win for the open-back versions. It sounds embarrasingly stupid when I think about it: of course there's an upside. I just never considered it, because I need to track vocals etc. I planned to just get my second pair of the hard-back kind, same as my B&W P7's. But after watching your video, I want to get a pair of opens, maybe Beyer Dynamics, because I often mix at hours when I can't make noise (tenement neighbours.) Thanks for another informative video.

Great video and info in this. I've done the expensive audio thing and loved it... then found out that listeners wouldn't hear like 80% of the detail i put into my music, simply because they aren't using these headphones or speakers. They use everyday stuff. So, I started Only making my music by only listening to it with everyday headphones. In the end, no matter what effort I put into the sound, the listener isn't going to hear all of it unless they are an audiophile also. Now my listeners pick up on more things since I create around what they use and adjust my levels based on that. It was a great change. I love music that has a wider soundstage. But if I'm putting so much effort into something most people won't hear, then I waste my time and make their experience worse since its not balanced for them.

I mean no disrespect to anyone liking these, but i truly fail to understand the "virtual headphone experience". I mean, you are listening to an emulation of something you dont know or own, in an emulated room you're not familiar with... How can that provide valuable insight in your mix quality? Isnt it better to learn your speakers & room, and/or your headphones, and know how to mix on that? In a while you will understand how your equipment translates to other environments. Truly puzzled by this...
