No talk of the 3DS version? I love how they changed the motion mechanics into a simple button press, and actually turned World 9 into a proper full world

To reach 200% completion, on your save file, all you have to do is complete all levels in mirror mode. You don't even have to collect the KONG letters in mirror mode. You don't have to complete any time trials, or collect a single puzzle piece. Based on what he says in the video, Jirard didn't know this.

That game was incredible the controls definitely took some getting used to and it would have been infinitely better had they incorporated 2 analog stick controls at least for the ground sections. Everything else in that game was amazing story, visuals, aesthetics, music, game play, voice acting all on epic levels. I really hope Sakurai brings a new and improved Kid Icarus in the style of Uprising onto the Switch. common Jirard lets give that game the attention it so richly deserves.
@jackhealy24348 жыл бұрын
facepwnagewtf on my god, yes. a kid icarus like that on the switch would be amazing! i mean it's technically a third person shooter, so they could just move the touch screen controls over to the right stick. it'd work really well on land battles, air battles might be a bit more complicated though, but it wouldn't really be that bad of an issue.

My absolute favorite Donkey Kong game! Also, this is one of the few games where I actually *love* the controls! The caveat to the controls, though, is that you need the nunchuck attachment; the waggle makes more sense when you waggle both like how DK pounds the ground. I almost fully completed the game before the challenge threshold got to me. The charm and visuals are so captivating, it was still delightful playing while struggling through the harder challenges. Also, 2-player is a nightmare starting at around the 4th world, when mine cart and rocket runs cost 2 lives because only one of you will operate the cart. It's fun to play with friends up until then; After that, they are more of a burden due to the much more frequent crumbling platforms and obstacles. It's actually very reminiscent of the 4-player Mario games ; fun with friends until you're all in each other's way.

If you got a 3DS. However, Emulation is also a great choice, if you got a Device that can Emulate it well. You can set up Buttons to perform certain motion actions. Wich completely eliminates the silly, useless, frustrating, dumb motion controlls on this game. (I don't mind Motion controlls, implemented correctly, and if they may add better functionality or whatever. On this game, it was utterly useless and would have played alot better with a classic controller - wich was not an option).

I'm with you. I played this game for hours on coop, and when Tropical Freeze came out, I had the pro controller, but got so used to the wiimote hold vertically, that we still played it that way. I also did the shiny gold time attacks this way, and I must say for some parts it makes it easier, because shaking the controller can be done, while keeping full control of all the buttons. It makes timing a roll jump easier. And boy do those time attacks unlock the full potential of the level design!

I totally agree. I honestly thought doing high jumps off of enemies without triggering Diddy's Jetpack was the more annoying control issue. I never failed to roll when I wanted to, but I can't even count the number of times I soared right over an enemy I was trying to bounce on. If anything needed a different button, it was the jetpack, not the roll.

What's confidence got to do with it? sometimes a game is good but clearly broken by completion objectives. sometimes it's enjoyable enough to complete to reccomend doing so. But a vast majority of good games are at that akward middle point where completing them is worth it to a certain extent but can feel like a drag if you force yourself to it. that rating workd.

Wow, only 107 deaths for a complete run through? I just played this game again with some friends and I don't even know how many deaths we had. You rock! Do Tropical Freeze!
@billny337 жыл бұрын
107 deaths you say? I just played through this game, no time attack, no mirror mode, but I got all the puzzle pieces and kong letters and beat the golden temple for 100% and I am fairly certain that I died WAY more than 107 times. You must be incredibly skilled. I tip my hat to you good sir.

I don't know about you, but I actually enjoyed playing both of the "Donkey Konga" games for the Gamecube; It's "Donkey Kong Jungle Beats" that I didn't enjoy for some reason. :P

Really? Donkey Kong Jungle beat is by far my favorite donkey kong game, and I'm not saying that as if it's the only one I played, but it's my first one.

William Waters I actually found the bongo controls to be quite puzzling at times, and the enemies that appeared in the game were also very unrecognizable and unappealing, which is one reason why I didn't get into it that much.

I played it on the wii so I didn't use bongos :/

William Waters Oh, yeah... I almost forgot that the game was re-released on the Wii with motion controls just like "Pikmin" and "Mario Power Tennis".

Although he said he was annoyed with the waggle, Jirard seems to be super resilient. And I LOLED so hard that there was even a MIRROR mode with one life that only super hardcore would dare to 100% complete lol!

Wow! Dude... 107 deaths... I know you are probably one of the better Donkey-Kong-Players out there, I was very impressed (and entertained) seeing you do the game with the bongo drum controller thingi, but... Only 107 deaths? All the temple levels, the cave world AND mirror mode? Even if you were able to practice for a few weeks to start the playthrough very skilled, I... Wow. I consider myself a good gamer, and I too completed this game, but I died like... 1070 times. Maybe more. Mirror mode is such a pain. Fun, but painful on your patience. You ARE Donkey Kong man. You really are. Wow. I guess that is what seperates you from us »normal« gamers. Love your content Jirard!
@Kinaldio8 жыл бұрын
I completed this game during a 3-day rental from my local video store, fucking loved it. Looking back, it does look pretty damn good for original Wii. The "waggle controls" neither helped nor hindered the game, imo. It's as easy to waggle as it is to press a button, if not easier. I feel that people just like to complain because it is a bit silly of a control style

DKCR defined my childhood as a 2000s- early 2010s kid. I tend not to like most platformers that don't include the third dimension, but holy shit DKCR is something special.

I fully agree about the motion control "Gimmicks" forced on this game. Especially when Nintendo sold Game Pad and Game Pad Pro controllers for the console, they should have allowed for people who wanted to use such a peripherals to use it and skip the motion gimmick. That said, I found it slightly easier to play the game with Nunchuck and Wii-mote. The nunchuck analog holds well enough to play a platformer (though I prefer a d-pad) and it makes shaking/wagglign easier with one hand and much more comfortable than the side ways Wii-mote.

I'll always remember getting this game. It was my birthday so I got to go to GameStop with my grandpa and I had my heart set on Mario vs dk miniland mayhem, but then I saw dkcr so I stopped grandpa mid-checkout and got this instead and I can confidently say that was one of the best decisions in my life.

@noname-jt6kl2 жыл бұрын
You actually don't need the items in mirror mode, you only need to beat the level, and that makes it more bearable. Plus you get 200% with or without time trials if you do mirror mode, making it more fun.
@SuperHperTube6 жыл бұрын
Almost played through all time and mirror mode. I just had half of the last world to get when my wii nonshock broke (you really should play it with that) I really loved time mode. You feel so good mastering every level. Like you are playing in instument and every level is a song. But with pure perfection.
@iBenjamin10005 жыл бұрын
you actually went and finished mirror mode and got all the golden shiny medals? That's crazy! I took multiple hundred deaths just getting all the kong letters and finishing the golden temple level, but hey, finishing this game was still a pretty good time.
@zgamer2008 жыл бұрын
Okay, this was the first episode I enjoyed in a long time. It's not that I didn't like the last few episodes, but lately it feels like you completing games had become a chore as opposed to something you genuinely enjoy doing. But with DKC: Returns you seemed to finally really be enjoying yourself once more, probably because of how much you love the DKC series, and that really showed in this video

Oh man. That sound when you collect a banana in this game is so satisfying.

I agree with you on everything except the motion controls, I think they fit well especially with the rolling and ground-pound abilities. I don't think the blowing should have been a feature though, feels super clunky to do.
