If you notice an animal is being mistreated in a chain store ask to speak with the person who keeps the enclosures/animals. Tell them your concerns. Take photos and wait a week. Come back and see if anything has changed. Take more photos and post them on social media, tag the store. Wait a week or more and see if anything has changed. If not call corporate and record the interaction if possible. Educate members around your community and advocate for animal welfare.

Corporate is most likely responsible for the bad habitat in the first place. I doubt that individual store managers, let alone the low level employees assigned to the live animal section, have the authority to completely overhaul the habitats. Petco keeps its rodents in tiny glass tanks. Fixing that would mean getting rid of the huge multi-tank structures and replacing them with multiple large proper cages and filling those cages with appropriate enrichment, bedding, and food, which is more $$$. And then keeping those new habitats clean means keeping sales associates off the floor longer while they do that, ie less time spent upselling to customers. Then, people who visit other locations after that one will wonder why it's so different. Corporate likes uniformity so that wont be good. Corporate is not going to approve any of that. Public pressure and boycotting is 100% the way to go, but individual employees and store managers shouldn't be used as scapegoats, which is what happens when you give corporate a specific store to pin the blame on. If youre going to spread awareness you need to make it clear that it is a companywide issue, not an individual location issue.

I work in the actual pet care part of Petsmart and I also agree -- we always try to encourage people to do their own research in addition, but most people coming into Petsmart want to just get a pet, plain and simple and unfortunately our only take-home guides , like you said, have bad/flat out wrong information (like claiming you can keep a betta in a fish bowl or that you can just give guinea pigs their vit c supplement in their water bottle ughhhh) I don't know if the animal warehouses are as bad as what is pictured in the video, but the corporation side of our store makes questionable decisions like shipping in animals too young (and not surprisingly, they very frequently get sick 🙃🙃) or sending in too many of an animal and we sometimes have to house animals together that shouldnt be kept together, like beardies. Also, someone else said that workers are given minimal information on how to care for the animals and if you're in pet care, you have to research everything yourself.......that is accurate. I don't mean to shade my job so much, I love caring for all the animal babus, but I highkey wish things were better.

I work at PetShmo and I agree with you. I strive to take care of my fur and scale babies at the store but it’s definitely disgusting the conditions they show up in. I’ve had my fair share of tear filled days when animals arrive. More people need to hold corporate accountable too though. There are workers who could care less about them and stores that are shitty but it all stems from corporate. The training programs are jokes and if you want to know anything you need to learn on your own. And the employees who know what they are doing normally get in trouble for raising concerns.

So.. I worked at petco for a while. I am someone who knows a lot about most animals. I’m really good with aquatics, and I have also had birds and many different small animals and my boyfriend keeps reptiles. As someone that worked there and knows as much as I do, it was painful to see... but I couldn’t do anything about it, because the corporation has set “rules” and “set ups” on enclosures and if the district leader comes in and sees that these things are off, then the store gets marked down... everyone I worked with agreed with me. We always wished that there was something we could do about it, but we can’t or we would get in trouble. I totally agree with you.. after seeing the way that they come in first hand... I can completely confirm the above comment 💯 the district managers are overwatch authorities with business degrees who ended up at Petco/Petsmart, not pursued it. I was hired as a “reptile specialist”. And at the time (2004) Wilson Pets was the contract supplier for their reptiles. I had full control of which animals we stocked. I already knew the guys at Wilson’s and had a lifetime of experience going into that position (8 yrs curating a reptile collection of over 2000 specimens) so I stocked the good stuff” minus overpriced morphs. That lasted only a few months before the DM showed up and attempted to lecture me on the husbandry techniques of reptiles he couldn’t pronounce the name off. 😂 oh and those little care sheets are so embarrassing and flat out misinformation ℹ️ I was hired at a management wage so I think thats why the DM nit picked me until he was able to fire me. ( which is the only job I’ve ever been fired from) But not before he sent me to each one of his district stores several times to train his other “specialists’”. 🤔 when I was fired, it was because technically i did feed live (thumped 😊😊) mice to ball pythons. The company’s idea of selling reptiles is to send me 30 very young, farm bred baby ball pythons , wouldn’t normally be a problem right but their expectation is to house them all together in a 36 x18x 12 😕 and sell them to folks who have never even had a pet snake before. Balls are easy but not if it’s a hatchling and you have no experience. Often babies will not acknowledge their food especially if it’s frozen thawed, Occasionally a live rat pup or a hopper mouse is a great way to get babies to accept their first meal, and most times it’s smooth sailing with the frozen after the first acceptance. I knew their no live feed rule but I had permission from the ops manager and the store manager, obviously they didn’t admit it 😂 but the corporate answer on this matter to me was If the snake won’t eat send it to the vet…. Mind you the Veterinarian we had didn’t know the difference between a turtle and tortoise, safe to say she wasn’t qualified as an exotic vet. These animals need expertise and that doesn’t come off of a care sheet. Truth of the matter be large chains unwilling to pay experts shouldn’t be involved in hustling animals. They should stick to selling vegan dog food 😂🤪

I absolutely will never buy from a pet store. When I was around 11 years old, I got a dog for my birthday, and he was the best and most loving dog I've ever owned (he was a pit mix) and I owned him for 3 years before people started complaining about him, because of his breed. All my neighbors believed in all the stereotypes made about pit bulls, and always called in and complained to our land lords, making up lies about him, one for example was so stupid, a lady said that my dog ran out of my house, jumped into her car, and bit her. That wasn't even possible, he never got out once. Any way long story short we either gave him up or got kicked out, so we got kicked out, but unfortunately couldn't afford a place that aloud dogs. We had to give him up to a shelter, and the only shelter that had room for him was lollipop farm. After seeing what he went through while we were there, I will never buy from a store, and I will always adopt animal out of the shelters. And to people that think shelter dogs are bad dogs, that is absolutely not the case. A lot of the time, the animals are there because their owners weren't able to keep them, like with what I went through. So please always give a shelter pet a chance, and I'm certain they will show so much affection to you, any way, if you read this far, thanks for reading and have a good night/morning

My issue is I feel like EVERY time I am in Petco or Petsmart there are families there that do not make these decisions with any research. So, the kids beg and beg and they get their cute Syrian with a tiny crittertrail they will get stick in and never be able to run on their wheel and they still get sales. Even if all of us who are knowledgeable stop buying animals from them, they will still get sales because of this! I tend to try and give some knowledge to families if I see that happening and it seems like they would be open to it at least in the enclosure or food they are buying (or if the kid is too young to be handling a hamster without adult supervision). It is really disheartening because I don't know how we could advocate for those kind of sales to stop otherwise.

But more importantly they never talked to my parents about how these animals aren’t a good choice for young children (I was maybe 5). When I volunteered at a rabbit shelter as a teenager staff would always discourage People from adopting if they would be a bad fit for the animal. They sometimes offered to have people volunteer at the shelter to know what’s it’s like to care for them before they’d let the person adopt. That’s how I started with them.

On average they are sold for 12 to 15 dollars plus taxes maybe 20. But with a life span of 2 to 3 years and they get sick, it's already lost money for them. Is super easy to breed hamsters, and have liter size of 6 to more. I wouldn't feel to bad but going to pass away soon anyways.

I was at a Petco one day when a young (teenage) girl was getting a ferret. She was all excited about it. I told her to make sure she went on the internet and learned all she could about how to take care of it. She thanked me for my advise and said she would do it. Whether she followed thru was a different story. All I know is when I got a rabbit, I bought books on how to care for it, and joined "House Rabbits Journal", a bi-monthly subscription to a little book with wonderful articles about how to take care of your rabbit. (IT IS POSTED ON THE INTERNET NOW.) And later when I got a Siberian Husky from a breeder, I bought several great books on Huskies and a very good book on dog training.

*Why I don't support Petsmart.* A few years ago, my cat had a urinary tract infection. The vets in there said "Oh, she can stay overnight and see if she'll pee. I'm going to be honest, she may not make it." ????? UTI's Are very treatable and how tf are you supposed to get a cat to pee if she has one???? I haven't been to petsmart for 3 years because my family is pissed. (my cat is fine. we took her back and went somewhere else)

I had a similar occurrence with one of my kittens years ago, but it was for a completely different reason. I had a small kitten, maybe about 4 weeks old and we were giving her a mixture of cat food and cat milk and she randomly stopped being active and just stopped moving, so we took her to petsmart. The vet there told us that there was nothing we could do, and that she was going to die. We took her back home with us, and my mother decided to try and get her to pke and see if that helped.... And she had a piece of food stuck in her throat. The vets didn't even examine her, they just looked at her and said she was going to die. But not even three hours later, she was running around with her brothers and sisters like nothing even happened.

That isn't Petsmart thought. Banfield is a separate company that is generally housed in Petsmart, but they are completely different companies, they even have different phone lines. Because of this Petsmart doesn't hire the vets so technically it's on Banfield not Petsmart. Not saying what happened to you is okay, maybe contact the Banfield corporation and tell them what happened.

Sydney Shark While I would never recommend anyone buying an animal from a pet store, saying that shelters have more variety is just a plain lie. There are plenty of good reasons to stay away from pet shops, so there's no need to make up a lie that can be disproven by a simple visit to a shelter. The small, popular breeds that are often sold in pet shops, get adopted/pulled from shelters and taken to private rescues almost as soon as they come in, leaving behind mostly pit types and shepherds. While those dogs can be great pets, I wouldn't exactly call it "variety".

Whenever I go to a Petsmart, the animals seem to be in such small cages. When I got my bird (before knowing about this issue) he was in a cage meant for 1-2 parakeets with at least 5 other birds. I noticed this, but I was so excited I got him anyway. I feel terrible contributing to the business even though I love my birds but it’s the truth. This animals will continue to be mistreated and kept in small enclosures unless you stop giving these big businesses money. It kills me that Walmart still sells live fish though. Even though my local Walmart seems to take pretty good care of their fish, I've seen some videos people made of their Walmarts fish section that looked so disgusting. There was really only one time at my local Walmart they had an issue with some dead fish. Their setup was they had a rack that was three tanks high and three tanks wide, and one day I went in, and they had a bunch of plecos in the bottom three tanks, maybe ten to a tank. But they were all floating around dead. The top two teirs were completely fine and the water was clear and all pumps looked like they were working, so I figured there must have been some mechanical failure or something... But other than that the only issue I have with my local Walmart is that they don't clean the beta cups enough...

I work for a vet clinic that is partnered with a cat rescue. Sometimes, once a cat we've been looking after for them has recovered, they are sent to a pet store so they can get some exposure. It certainly helps get the cats adopted out, even if just to remind the public that adoption is an option for bringing home their next fluffy friend. I love how PetSmart partners with rescues and donates food to needy animals. I also adopted my rabbit from the city shelter and he was being housed at a PetSmart. The staff were super nice and made sure to check that I knew how to care for him properly.

I bought my two frogs from Petsmart, they are pretty happy and healthy now since I bought them skinny and sick. My first frog was sick though but I was lucky my next two were healthy. I mean we could try petitions, boycotts, but it won't fix it. If people buy supplies from there, Petsmart stays in business. I know I said I bought animals and I do buy supplies from there. At the time I thought I was saving them, now I realize I just make them bring more frogs in. I'm not sure what side to take except I won't buy other frogs from there I'll buy frogs from people that have a thick skull and brain. What we CAN do is petition to stop them from selling animals and only selling supplies, adopting cats, and keep other dog programs open? This includes Petco since they have more frogs Petsmart only sells one type of frog.

*Here’s my experience with PetCo* I got a cockatiel from petco with the description of “very spunky”. He hated hands and wouldn’t interact. Within the span of 8 weeks, I got the cockatiel to cuddle and step up, completely different and more tame then when I bought him. He had fresh water every day, fresh fruits and vegetables, and a clean cage every week. I come home one day and he’s on the floor of his cage, dead. There was no warning signs (which shouldn’t be, because birds don’t show signs of illness in the wild) and they would not give me my refund. My dad actually had to slander them on Facebook to get the refund. When my mother called them after he died, they said it’s our fault for not taking him to the vet as soon as we got him. When my mom went into the store to get the refund, she saw the new *shipment* of cockatiels, and they looks terrible. They look malnourished, and angry. I STRONGLY recommend getting your pet from the breeder them self, instead of these stores that get shipments. Including pet smart as well.

When you buy from a breeder, you get to see the conditions the breeder is raising the animals in and how well or poorly they care for them...whether areas are clean or nasty and full of crap. Also read as much as you can find on the internet about how to care for your new little baby. The internet is a very resourceful tool in this regard. It can also teach you what to look for at the breeder's and what questions you need to ask to ask. Also what certificates they should gladly attain in their breeding program.

I feel like every time I go to PetSmart there are dead fish in the tanks, and lots of the fish either have rotting fins or some sort of disease... I can't tell ya how many times I see dead bettas in cups on the shelfs... When I got my first betta from PetSmart he literally almost died within the first three days! I was able to help him, and he lived for a year longer since then. He had literal fungus growing on his fins causing them to fall off. I was not very knowledgeable in how poorly the stores take care of these animals, so I didn't understand at the time how it's not a great idea to get pets from chain pet stores... Unfortunately where I live there really aren't local profesional animal breeders, so the only places we can get pets are the chain pet stores, or from websites like Craigslist (or through a foster care or shelter) but Idk much about how the shelters around here work. Especially with covid.. I definitely lean towards getting a rehomed animal that actually can be saved and not be quickly replaced like it would be in a chain petstore.

For the most part, it’s important to adopt cats and dogs. There are so many homeless dogs and cats out there. For more specialized or exotic animals, a breeder is 100% the way to go. There are always exotics in need of rescue and adoption, but unless you have experience first, I wouldn’t recommend rescuing. I rescued 3/7 of my rats and it’s been very rewarding. But I know two of my rescues would have been over my head if I got them first.
@PestilentAllosaurus6 жыл бұрын
Ditto! After so many rescues some of which had severe mental & physical issues from rescue shelters. It might sound a bit bad but my family wanted to adopt a puppy from a certain breed that we knew exactly the needs or an ideal of what care our new furry family member would need. We did extensive research and even asked to tour their place where we decided to get a rat terrier. My mom and me were very impressed. I think it's also important when a person adopts a rescue who may need special needs (even as a puppy) such as a young yorkshire terrier that was taken from a bad puppy mill. He had off and on serious mental issues but lived up to 18 years with the best care we could offer him. Or the adult lab and mutt we adopted who had abusive backgrounds. It had taken soo much patience for our lab Bow due to trust issues. So if you feel experienced enough to handle a rescue like that, that those problems might last for the rest of their days while other difficulties can be trained or fixed with long time patience & trust.
@PurpleDragonair6 жыл бұрын
I agree with the comment about it's okay to go to reputable breeders. We got a Ragdoll cat from a breeder but we did our research and found that there is a genetic disorder that Ragdolls can get and not many shelters check for it. So in our case we decided a good breeder was the best option so we can ensure we got a cat that didn't have this disorder.
@cleliaoconnell37056 жыл бұрын
Hi, it makes me really relieved when I read your comment! I live in an area with very few bird shelters, and the few that exist will not let you adopt from them unless you meet some crazy criterias. (like have a flock of 10, make the bird live in a huuuuuge aviary will all your flock, spend your life at home with the birds, have birds for 30 years... some crazy and sometimes ridiculous requirements are asked. These are examples but they are of the same level as the real ones) That's why I settled for a breeder, and I get shamed by a certain type of person. I would love to adopt but the rescue won't let me. I'm not going to drive to another country just to get a rescue when I have several excellent breeders in the region.

when you buy and give business to petco or whatever, this transaction is recorded for the next meeting. There the teams will look over this possibly say "Oh, people are buying this animal, let's bring more in." so while you do save one animal, you are condemning more then a 1000 animals to be bred in horrific conditions and be brought into a store where you possibly cannot save them all. I know we all have good intentions but the way business works make it that we have to sacrifice these animals so that these companies learn that nobodies gonna buy/adopt until they improve the way all these critters are treated, mostly because business will go down and the companies would face harm. I'm sorry if I'm not making sense as English is a second language. Just to restate, you're saving one animal, but depending on the store condemning more to be bred and treated not very nicely.

This is why Petco and Petsmart no longer sell puppies or kittens, but work with local shelters to get adoptable animals into the stores. It's a great way for the animals (and the shelters) to get more visibility as well as cutting down on the use of puppy mills. There are other stores that still SELL puppies and kittens, which I feel should be named and shamed. Here's a quote from the ASPCA website: "There is no legal definition of a “puppy mill,” so don’t be fooled by pet store owners who show you “papers” or licenses to prove that their dogs are from humane sources. The fact is, responsible breeders would never sell a puppy through a pet store because they want to screen potential buyers to ensure their puppies are going to a good home."

I used to work for Pet Supermarket.... I got lucky and my store was fabulous about caring for their animals like they were their own. However we had so many animals show up in terrible condition. I can’t tell you how many dead hamsters I’ve found because they had wet tail and it wasn’t treatable. Cooperate also has shit policy on how the cages should be stocked, we’d have issues were hamsters would fight or kill each other because A they shouldn’t be housed together and B they were overcrowded. We would also have pregnancies and if we caught them in time we could put the female in the back and she could have a cage to herself... unfortunately this was not often the case.... we’d have lots give birth on the floor overnight and come in in the morning to find out and unfortunately the babies were usually eaten by Mom or the cagemates. The feeder mice constantly killed each other... hermit crabs were always dying... we didn’t have a reptile section at my store or else I’m sure those would have been in awful condition too... it was just a super depressing place to work...

So today I went to Petco after buying my first crestie to get all the stuff, and I noticed that there were like 5-7 cresties in one tank, and the same amount of leopard geckos in the other, and they were like 60.00, and my Grandma was like, “We should have come here before the Vivarium blah blah blah”, and I was like ‘... the gecko we got is beautiful, (white with cream stripes) and plus these geckos look SO crowded and hot...’ in my mind, so I said, “Our gecko is one of a kind.” Because the worker was around. I felt so bad because they were soooo crowded. The cage didn’t even have any climbing space. I really agree, because the worker even gave false info: Me: (Testing him) “So after I set up the enclosure, should I wait about a week?” Him: “No, put the gecko in IMMEDIATELY after you set it up.” Me: “So how often do you have to feed a crested gecko?” Him: “Well, look in here. (Crested gecko tank) See the food and how watery it is? It’s supposed to be almost as tough as Play Dough. (In mind: Why did you just call the workers out for it being liquidy??) But when it is that high, don’t feed them again until it runs out.” The instructions on the Repashy specifically said to replace the food every 24 hours. False info. So yeah. The Pet Club nearby had big enclosures, with at max 3 geckos inside, good info, and overall good stuff. Pet Club is not very popular, but it is perfect for getting things like plants, enclosures, fish tanks, food, food and water dishes, and much more. Petco is not the first place I would think of to get a gecko... I would go to the East Bay Vivarium. Very good reptile keeping. BEAUTIFUL geckos, such as my brand new gecko, Bloop, who is white with pale stripes. They gave you very good CORRECT info on how to handle and care for a crestie. They tell you how to hold a gecko, and how to put your hand in front of it when you are holding it, and they let you hold the gecko(s) that you want to purchase, and they can hold your gecko for up to 2 weeks after you buy it. Very nice place. I strongly recommend it. Overall message: PETCO SUCKS!

I feel like I need to clear this up even though it was mentioned in the video. Not EVERY location is as awful as people make it out to be. The PetSmart I work at has extremely knowledgeable workers, and we all go above and beyond to take care of our animals, right down to even making sure the fish (such as koi) aren't lonely. I also have the opportunity to know where our location gets their animals, and its a fairly local breeder. The training is part computer training, with the rest being knowledge passed down from "higher up" employees. I hate how everyone always shits on us employees and just thinks we're a bunch of highschool dropouts, when we do everything in our power to give the animals amazing lives while they're with us, and even after they go to homes. Basically what I'm saying is, as long as you go to a location that is picky with hiring knowledgeable staff (and you'll be able to figure that out by asking basic questions), I don't see an issue with buying animals and supplies from these stores.
@reaganhenricksen82077 жыл бұрын
I work at the vet inside Petsmart and they are amazing! The pet care staff are so knowledgeable and caring about the pets and if one of the animals even acts different for a minute they rush them right over to us! I agree with you, there are good locations out there!

Nicole I wholeheartedly believe some PetSmart are nicer than what people think. They actually refused to sell their fish until I get an appropriate aquarium tank and if one fish is sick in the tank, they refused to sell the other fish in that same tank.

You and the store can take care of the animals all you want, but is really about where they come from and how they were treated then.
@clayreichard17745 жыл бұрын
I work at petco and from the information I’ve got from my manager aside from the fish the company has stopped selling animals from mass breeders. If you’re at a store and you see an issue you can ask to speak to the CAL(companion animal leader) or the manager on the floor. If the issue is not resolved you can find the general manager online and try to contact them and tell them. That is much more productive than leaving a nasty yelp review.
@mmb40946 жыл бұрын
I never thought of it that way. I was one of those people who thought “well you are saving the animal that is not being taken care of properly” but I never thought of how they will just replace that animal with another animal and treat it the same. I never have gotten an animal from a chain pet store and now I never will.
@misslovelyemily7 жыл бұрын
I work at petsmart and at our store we do not do that :( we take care of them. Feed them daily and heat and ubv. And we take them to the vet if they sick. We do not sell our animals if the customer does not have everything for the animal. The breeders are actually bad they try to send us sick or really bad condition.
@notreally197 жыл бұрын
I also work at Petsmart and it is the same for us. I can't speak for all pet stores but I am proud of mine. We actually have animals for adoption at our store. We work with a rescue group that will give us hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits to put up for adoption! However, I stil believe if you can rescue an animal go elsewhere first!
@alexhirsch31367 жыл бұрын
I agree with what youre saying but petco and petsmart are still giving money to these breeders that arent caring properly for there animals but thats not the stores fault but the ceos that run these pet stores
@AM-fh7ek7 жыл бұрын
Can't you report the breeder or something?
@alexhirsch31367 жыл бұрын
Im sure you could but it would be pointless the US has very little regulations on how animals in the pet trade are cared for so they can pretty much do whatever they want to with the animals.
@stellarlunar877 жыл бұрын
I had a petsmart employee refuse to sell me a lizard once because I wasn't buying all the "necessary" supplies. It would be a good policy if more employees actually knew what the animals needed. That particular employee refused to sell me a baby crested gecko because I would not buy it 2 heat lamps AND a heat pad/heat rock. Anyone who has crested geckos knows that this would overheat and kill it almost instantly, because crested geckos should be housed in the high 70's, not 99°-110° which is how it would've been with all that heat.

@megansweetcheeks6 жыл бұрын

Im in a similar situation. I want to buy a hamster, and I've looked and looked for breeders nearby, but the closest is a state or two away. I've looked on Craigslist for hamsters (even though the idea of meeting a stranger from Craigslist scares me) and no luck. I'll give it another 2 weeks or so, but after months of searching, I guess I will have to go the Petco/Petsmart route too. 😞

And the little bit of Charity that these big companies do, does not outweigh the horrid, unethical practices that they practice. today I needed to buy crickets and the local reptile shop that I go to was closed, so I had to go to Petco. They had the sweetest Green quaker parrot there who was super personable and adorable. But whose beak was covered in poo from eating it. I told the store associate that either the bird is malnourished or bored and that's why it's eating its poo. It had only two little cheap plastic crappy toys in its cage and I felt so sorry for it. I asked the manager if I could purchase a toy for this bird and I was told that customers are not allowed to do that per their corporate policy. Not only did I get totally ripped off for the crickets I had to buy my beardie, I left the store feeling heartbroken and irate for this poor little bird.

I have gotten a large majority of my pets from Petco and PetSmart, I perfer the Petco at my area because the employees there are extremely helpful, friendly and my pets have all been really healthy and lived long full lives some even living passed their expected lifespans, the employees from PetSmart were really rude, not helpful at all and my pets only lived a few years. I have a ferret who I got from Petco and he's about to turn ten soon when a ferret's expected lifespan is about five to seven years, now I did my research before getting him and the employee that helped me out was really knowledgeable and he helped me pick out the best cage, bedding and shampoo for my ferret. I personally believe that it depends on the area where the stores are at, I would most definitely go to Petco than PetSmart

My Petco features cats from shelters only, and it features the name of the shelter on the cage. So you ARE rescuing an animal. Other than that this is a great informative video. And they don't cram the animals up into one small cage. They have removable doors and usually give the cat free run of 3 enclosures. Of course this means they can't show as many animals. But the animals they do show are extremely comfortable in their enclosure.

The place I moved from had both a Petco and a PetSmart. The Petco was full of sad, overcrowded, and nervous animals in dirty tanks. Our PetSmart was luckily one of the nicer ones and I never- I mean never -saw a sick or stressed animal there. I do have a question, though. When you have your heart set on an animal and there aren't any breeders or rescues within 200 miles of you, what do you do? Is it worse to buy from a small, family-owned pet store or put an animal through the stress of going on a 3-hour car ride?

Okay so here's what's up with Petco, every hour there is a noise which indicates our employees must walk around & make sure all the animals are okay. Any signs of illnesses must be reported, then brought to wellness (instore care area) and brought to a vet in 24hrs. If employees don't know an answer to something then they SHOULD NEVER just make shit up, they're suppose to find someone who does know the answer or Kindly ask the customer to wait while they do research. My store prides itself on it's appearance, animal health & compassion. If a store isn't proper then don't dish it out on social media and tell people not buy from the company in whole, do something to change that specific store or tell an employee that something is in bad condition and it needs to be fixed. Sick animals are not to be sold SO SAY SOMETHING don't just go on the internet and talk shit about a problem you wont fix when you have the full capability to do so. As for the size of what they enclosures are suppose to be, they all have specific sizes & capacity to which the animals are able to be kept for sales purposes and the health of the animals. Any "over stocked" animals are suppose to be kept in wellness, happy and healthy. Everyone who works at Petco goes through the same extensive training. If a store doesn't meet those expectations then there is something wrong with the ememployee, not the company.

I work at PetSmart and I can say that these animals are shipped in in boxes and cups and most of them come on traumatized. I just try to feed them and care for them as much as I can

Before going to any pet shop (even if it's smaller), you should always look online to see if you can find a hobby breeder within a 2 hour radius of where you live (or more, if you're willing to travel further, but 2 hours should be the minimum travel time to expect for an animal that will be with you for the rest of its life time). Try to also see where they keep their breeding stock, and don't just believe them without checking to make sure.

@animalobsessed17 жыл бұрын
That motto is actually making the problem worse, especially in regards to small animals. We need MORE responsible breeders, not less. It is almost impossible to find certain animals outside of pet shops, because breeders are so rare. This is what causes people to buy from pet shops EVEN THOUGH they know what they're supporting. Many species of small pet are not properly domesticated, so they will only become truly tame if they are well socialized from a young age. This is why it is perfectly reasonable for people to want a young animal, instead of an adult rescue.

This is about buying cats, not adopting. Petsmart and Petco do not sell cats, they take cats from local animal shelters and adopt them out. He is saying not to buy pets from pet stores because they come from unethical backyard breeders.

My friend is a high ranking manager at Petco and knowing her for years, she takes very good care of the animals there. They also work with Happy Endings, a local rescue no kill cat shelter thats well known in the area. I think most stores are like that, but not all.
