Im 40. 2 years self teaching. Got my first software engineering job 3 months ago. Stay focused!

@Dan Lons my first comment was deleted. Here we go: 6 months head in HTML/CSS and Javascript to understand how web development work. Then turned focus into Python and stuck with it. I'd do 3 Python problems daily over and over again until every single concept stuck. After I was comfortable enough with it, started doing every single youtube Python project follow along video I could find. Then I'd do them on my own over and over. Applied for at least 20 entry level jobs until one landed. (I'd send my very modest portfolio even if I wasn't the fit they were looking for.)

@Dan Lons I find that focusing on the process and not the goal was key for me. Doing 2 to 3 Python exercises a day became automatic, like brushing teeth. It stuck.

I got my life together in my 40's. Teenage years lost to war and immigration, twenties lost to a debilitating illness and recovery from it, 30's lost to having had to catch up on education and making money that I could not do in my twenties due to the illness...Got finally everything together in my 40's, living my best life. It's possible. And sometimes you just don't have a choice, life does not run in a straight line for everyone, so you have to make it WHEN you can, whatever that age is for you.

Inspiring story. I began to sort my life recently, and i am almost 40. I have not been through war or serious ilness, but i had emotional problems in my 20,s, which i could not solve, so i escaped from them. fortunately, i did not become a drunk, addict or anything, just felt stuck in a loop. Life is a not a game when you have to check the boxes, make the quest before anyone else etc. I am still singel, but well,n ot everyone is meant to have a family and kids, does not mean your life does not hold value. You gotta seek your own path, not emulate what people around you do. Some of them are clueless just you were , but just try to hide it.

You're not alone and trust me, being in your 20s when the 2008 bubble hit, yeah that has long lasting effects. If you are 30 now, I'm 31, you have MADE it this far. It's not all on you. Here's a secret no one will tell you... Anyone over 50 would give everything they have to be 32 and homeless, including Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffet, Elon Musk, etc. You have something they would give all their fortunates to have, another 20+ years added to their lives. You are richer beyond your imagination, and maybe that is the problem, it's beyond most people's imagination so they can never value while they have it.

Damn. Sometimes life straight up gives you a friendly smile, puts its hand on your shoulder & then sucker punches you right up the guts into the bottom of your lungs knocking the air right out of you, dropping you to your knees & walks away giggling. The question is what do you do from there? Get lost in your own head, daily bad habits & stop taking care of yourself? Or do you decide right now, RIGHT NOW, I'm taking control & going to be proactive, not reactive, & start to create good habits & set goals beginning today. And if the weight of the loss is too much, ask yourself, what would my loved ones say to me? What would they want me to do? Live your best for them.

Its hard when you are in the thick of being at rock bottom to believe life can turn around, but it absolutely can. You just have to have a concrete methodical plan and be patient. Absolutely true! At 35 I quit drinking, smoking, and completely wasting my potential at a factory job where I'd worked for 10 years and where the last day of work was almost identical to the first. I threw that whole life away and made a big break - not necessarily a clean break but a big, dramatic break. My friends who wanted me to hang out with them and stay drunk were angry and the friends I had who wanted the best for me understood my leaving. I left town. I left everyone. I hit reset. I started out with only the money I could make in busking (which is no more and no less than hustling with a guitar) and odd jobs. But I lived cheap with no need for alcohol, tobacco, and other ludicrous expenses. I bought ten big notebooks, a Parker fountain pen, and started writing. I read James Clear's 'Atomic Habits'. I began waking up at 4 A.M. and running every other morning. I started a study routine. I began making a new, tiny circle of friends who were trying to make their own lives better. I read, diligently, the works of great people of the past. I still do all this on a daily basis and it costs nothing. Now I have new problems but they are the problems of a person progressing, of a person getting better. I am 36 - a year has passed - and I don't recognize myself. I have my own business now and it is growing every day. I was homeless then and my prospects were shrinking every night. I just assumed I was too old to change.
@TheFxEditor
@TheFxEditor 2 жыл бұрын
What is your business in? How did you change so drastically in one year?
@ElliotBrownJingles
@ElliotBrownJingles 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheFxEditor I do repair work, painting, and installations on residential properties. Most of my "work" time is spent networking and advertising. A lesson I had to learn quickly was that not everyone is my customer. I only do the highest paying clients now in the richest part of town (unless it is an elderly person, for example, who really does need an urgent job done - then I'll help them out). I managed to change so drastically because of what I've cut out of my life. I had just as much time then as I do now but I wasted every minutes of it proactively. I saw free time as something needing to be filled up. What I've realized is that the progress I'm making now isn't all that amazing - It's the progress I would have been making all along if I didn't have all the obstacles I'd placed in my own way. For example: a year ago if I'd done a small repair job and made, say, $1,000 I would let the news out to my friends. They'd be knocking on my bedroom door within 20 minutes asking where the party's at. It might seem like a stupid problem but that kind of mindset was holding me back. In short: I've cut out all the time-wasting (and it was almost all time-wasting) and I started treating my hours as sacred.

5 years for the results, very true. But you could realistically completely change yourself in 6 months. You could lose 50 pounds, or get jacked or train for a marathon if committed. You could start on a new career/ moneymaking path. Get a girlfriend. Develop a lot mentally with conscious practice. Within 6 months you could actually be unrecognisable both physically and in your mentality compared to 6 months before, if you follow a disciplined path of progression each week. Keep that going and in 5 years you are literally a different human being

The amount of stuff that can change in a persons life within just 1 or 2 years is insane. 5 years is only needed when you are completely trying to change your career or when you live in the US/another country where working conditions are so terrible that you need 5 years just to have enough free time.

Too late for love, for family, for children, for carieer change, for everything. Why? Cause at 40s you will be in fkin pain most of of the time, tired, exhausted, bored and you will just give up. That's how it is. There is "oooh you can be who you want" or "oooh you can fulfill your dream just don't give up" or "uuu life is so beautifull" lol. It doesn't work for everyone. Actualy, I have never a person who managed to have a happy life lol. We all just go to work every day, eat, sleep and then die lmao. So why bother anyway? And after 40, 50, you are just not so sharp anymore, you have pain, sickness, you will fall asleep on your dreamy trip around the world lol... So ya, if you didn't travel around the world in your 30s, you probably never will lol... all other dreams- just the same situation.

The thing with life is that you may or may not get your life "together" before 30. If you did manage to get it together by 30, there's no guarantee that it'll last. You could lose it at any moment. The most difficult part is to accept this fact and work on yourself regardless. Like for me, I had a decent job and was doing fine till a year ago. Everyone including me thought that I had it together. Then the pandemic and other bunch of stuff all came together and wrecked everything. Now, I'm starting from the ground up again. It sucks but meh such is life.

I feel like there's a bit of a blessing in disguise in struggling in your 20s and getting it together after 30. I envied a lot of my friends as I went through my 20s because they were so way ahead of me, but nowadays I see them either being stagnant or panicking over losing something that I'd consider "convenience" rather than necessities. After all, if you've been struggling, the worst you can lose is your life and limb. If you had a successful career and lost it, you probably don't even know/want/can't downgrade towards waiting tables or working retail. It's made even worse by how much our lives are usually lived through debt.

That saved us from ruin in 2020. My buddies who financed big houses, cars, boats where all screwed when they lost their jobs. We lived modestly with only our house affordably financed. I was able to take some time to find the next path and had money to invest in whatever endeavor. Don't need a ton of money or anything really as long as you enjoy the life you are living and sustain it. Anything extra is just a means to more easily enjoy it. People get too caught up in "what you should do" or competing to be better, but really that is not important unless you are competitive driven and enjoy that anyways. Just my view point, everyone dies anyway. Don't matter if you are extremely rich or have a great job. Just that you enjoyed what you had and appreciated it. It took me until my 40s to “get my life together”, and this was after decades of “doing all the right things” beforehand. It literally took decades before I could finally find the right opportunities. Decades of getting educated with multiple “useful” degrees, staying out of debt, drinking, drugs, and finding the right relationship eventually. It still took decades. So even when you “do everything right” for decades, it doesn’t guarantee anything. Luck and being in the “right demographic” unfortunately both play a big part. Both of those things were not necessarily on my side.

It seems you've missed that fact, probably because you haven't lived it. And btw many of those kids of immigrants you speak of ARE Americans (or Canadians or whatever) and are part of the domestic born population. They still have to work way harder than the demographics who have it way easier by virtue of things they never had to work for. Let's put it this way: if a person of colour (regardless of where they were born - btw something that's never questioned of yt people), especially a woman or non-binary person of colour with a disability spent years on drugs, dropped out of school or made the kind of life mistakes the person making this video is talking about, there's absolutely no way that society would even give them a chance to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" - a nonsensical notion in the first place. They'd have no way "coming back". We're not even allowed to make mistakes. Not a single one. A cishet yt man who made the same decisions and worked as hard as I have done in my life would be far more statistically likely to be in a completely different (i.e. more successful) place in life, instead of merely middle class.

I think for our generation the 20s are the like the new “teen years” with more freedom of choice, which makes us confused and lost. For the previous generation, you had a house and a family at 25. You had maybe 4 options of career. Now it’s like 30s are the new 20s. Money also changed its value. We have to explore more in search of a direction. I’m soon to get into my 30s and feel a lot more grounded. 20s was a mess struggling with undiagnosed depression and adhd. Went to study electrical engineering at 20 without having any clue of the work it takes. Still studying for that Bsc, for almost a decade, which takes regularly 4 years. But now at 29 it’s the first time I cope with my problems. Learnt a lot during those lost years. Stabilized after a few setbacks with a long term relationship and friends I met because of those lost years. Learnt to set boundaries for myself and others. Maybe not academic achievements and financial security, but I gained a lot in my 20s. We need to reframe our definitions for success and value in life.

We dont know where we are going, what should we have accomplished by that point...but life is moving too fast! I was 26 when I started my change. It took many years until I hit 31 before I got my degree and then had to take entry level jobs to build my resume. Life is not an on switch. When you start to get passions you will find it is a dimmer and over 10 years it slowly increases. My passion was to prove people wrong that I was a loser who with ADHD was restarted when I was 26. It fueled me and I went to a community college to take just 2 courses I would enjoy. I get straight A's! Those credits are transferable to a state university btw. I worked crappy side hustles and kept at it with school and kept going and going. You can do it. I proved my naysayers wrong. Maybe if that doesn't motivate you find something else. Win at something! Do you love cars? Take a mechanic cert program with several courses and work at a corvette dealership. Love fashion? Go take art courses and apply after 2 years to a fasion institute. You get the picture

I spent 30 years of my life doubting myself and thinking I'm not worthy of doing what I want, being happy, making my own choices (had to do with my childhood and type of parenting I received). I went to exactly 2 therapy sessions - and on the first one, the therapist told me I suffer from "learned helplessness". It blew my mind that I'm still acting and feeling as a 10 year old, not doing things because "of course I can't do them... what would my mother/father say? I'm not even gonna try, I'm sure I'd fail anyway". She told me next time those thoughts come into my mind, I should stop them and say "I dare to do xyz". No matter what it is, don't be afraid to do it, to try it, to fail at it, because the true failure is giving it up before even trying. I moved halfway across the world, I re-focused on an IT job I was kind of floundering at, I started learning Unreal engine programming and am making my own game. I might fail, but I'll know that just by trying, I've already succeeded in all the ways that count. I dared to be happy, or to at least go for a chance at happiness. It's not easy, but at least now I know that I can try to do different things until I find something that works for me and makes me happy, rather than stay in the same slump and never try.

At the age of 16 the war started in Bosnia. I was living as a civilian in a warzone for 1.5 years.Many people I knew where killed. At the age of 18 I moved to Norway with my parents. Lived in a refugee camp for 2 years. At age of 20 I started at Norwegian high school. I didnt speak the language, I suffered from PTSD, I was very depressed. I tried to take my life. But I didn't die. I started to work incredibly hard and work my way back. Started practicing martial arts, that helped me a lot. Finished the high school at age of 24 with very good grades in a foreign country. Got a good job in a private company, but quit at age of 26 because I wanted to study. Started at the University. My father got cancer, my mother became a alcoholic. Quit university to help mum and dad for 1 year.. Got back to university and studied for 5 years. Met a nice girl, but it didnt work out. at Age of 32 finished my degree and started to work in a social service helping other people who had problems. My mother alcohol problems got worse, but dad survived cancer. At age of 35 I got very bad again. This time because off my mothers alcohol problems. I spent the next 8 years getting psychological help. Realized I have spent all my life helping other people but never taking care of my self. I never got married, never owned my own house or apartment And here I am now at the age of 47. Trying to start all over again and build on the experiences and the wisdom I have developed. And I know I will succeed and my life story will be even more amazing to tell. 🙂 If I can give you a piece of advise; don't give up. You are capable of much more then you think.

I'm 29. For me, I delt with depression a lot in my 20's, because of not having a support system in my family. Until I realized, I was wasting my time trying to get emotional support from my family, I had to find other ways to motivate myself, and it worked ☺️

I am a 21 year old guy who will be turning 22 this December and I messed up my college life. I am an electronic engineering student and previously I had failed in some subjects in 3rd semester and 5th semester and again in one subject in a 7th semester subject. Thankfully I managed to pass in those previous semester subjects in which I failed but I failed in one of my last semester subject too so I can't even graduate this year and can only write the exam in Feb 2023 and only after passing it, I can get my degree certificate and will graduate. My results were out in August 2022 and I still haven't told about it to my parents about it as I am too scared. I am planning to do my MBA either in my country or even abroad but I am a bit worried because I haven't got my degree certificate yet as I failed in that last semester subject. I wish I could go back in time and tell the 19 year old me to concentrate in studies and not fail in the subjects.

I'm 29 making around $200 a month from Nicaragua, learning english and code, living with my parents, feeling like a looser. Rejected in many jobs for not having what's required for the position. I know how it feels, in my case I wasted my twenties trying to be master of all trades, being the ethernal student. But this video really helped me to continue and never give up. Thanks.

I earned a bachelor's degree at 23, a master's degree at 29, was in the emergency room for my back two weeks later, and became homeless at 36 through no fault of my own--simply a lack of responses to my job applications and being told that I can't have Disability because there is no physical reason that I can't do a desk job.

I'm 26 and I've been feeling this way, I work minimum wage, living at home with parents, I have a college degree, but no full time 9-5 job, I was unemployed for 2 years, feeling like a bum and failure, seeing everyone my age getting engaged, married, having children, buying houses etc, made me feel behind in life. I started to feel like an adult at 24 and I'm growing now. I would say things are getting better for me now, I've matured and grown up. Life is not a race but a journey, I'm applying to full time jobs and I'm saving money too.
