Dr Carter, I know to the last feeling in my soul what you are so desperately trying to message. The desperate breath of hope in the wind. It reminds of a story I once heard and felt so identified with, it spoke of a great fire in the forest where all animals were running scared for their lives, whilst a hummingbird kept flying in and out trying to fight the flames one beak full of water at a time, and the animals would stop and tell him he was a fool for thinking it would make any difference and that he should stop znd just accept the tragedy. But he didn't, he couldn't, and kept flying with even more conviction into the blazin hell upon his feathers, because it was his truest nature to live by what he loved and knew to be Life.

The future you speak of Peter is inevitable. To any student of human history and behaviour it is clear that the trajectory we are now on is clearly on the path of a 6th Extinction, we will not change course in time. There will be a transition away from Fossil Fuel use in Transport and emissions and Fossil Fuel will peak and then drop between 2035 to 2050 however the pipeline of CO2 and Methane already in the system and the tipping points already being passed will lead to the fears you speak of being realised. As you say we have become masters of our own extinction and we only have ourselves to blame.

Hi Dr Carter. I have never seen you respond to commenters so don't know if you read them. Irrespective, I can hear your exasperation and how this weighs on your soul. Judging by your voice, you sound tired, overwhelmed and possibly depressed. It's understandable given the subject matter of war, climate collapse and potentially the end of our civilization. With that said, it sounds to me like you need to take a break from your research and give yourself some time away from material related to the climate and war. Give your self some time and space to recuperate for the sake of your mental health.

We are currently suing at least trillion dollars for new weapons. And those weapons are based on fossil fuel systems, so we are not lowering our carbon footprint in coming decades in at least military sector. This is a huge addon to the climate catastrophe. And most likely for the life that the weapons will take in the future. Sensible negotiations are stopped because of the war, energy crisis, food crisis and were these negotiations really even denting the actual crisis? We are nearing a large scale war and total runaway climate. And don't forget ecology crisis, ongoing 6th mass extinction, huge chemicalization, seas filled with plastics, total death zones are growing fast, lesser death zones are created by man (1-3 species instead of plenty, ie. our farmlands, roads, buildings, cities, ...), ... But yes, these are a bit slower crisis and often directed locally, but yet still doomsday has to start somewhere. Overall ecological collapses can cause doomsday specially if we start wars for the remaining resources.

@@JonathanLoganPDX Its not by Russia.. its actually by United States. You know the same country that blew up the Nordstream pipelines and created a ecological disaster. The US is the largest weapons manufacturer in the world and profits off of perpetual war. Thats what the US literally runs on, oil and weapons. The US violated treaties they signed with Russia and left Russia no alternative but to invade, to protect itself from US war interests.

Bless you Peter... I can hear your concern in your voice... But actually the war in Ukraine is unlikely to escalate further as the UAF is running-out of ammunition, equipment and above all personnel ... . However, the understory is that this conflict has itself involved some very serious acts of ECOCIDE, perpetrated by the West/errant fascist puppette regime in Kiev - namely: the targetting and destruction of the Nordstream Pipeline... The targetting - though thankfully unsuccessful - of the Energoder (Zaparorizhzhia) nuclear power plant - probably the most irresponsible artilliary order in the history of modern warfare and of course all those tanks running around, shell explosion etc... As you rightly point out... . However, though we all agree that the combustion of sequestered carbon (fossil fuels) is driving anthopogenic global warming, to cease it suddenly will NOT make a jot of difference to the outcome... I keep telling you this, but you keep ignoring the fact that there is the anthropogenic climate inertia to take into account and that along with burning of FF's comes a modicum of cooling from the NOx and sulphate aerosols that are currently keeping the biosphere cooler by over a degree of cooling; the aerosol masking... If the move away from FF's happens too quickly (unlikely), then that cooling will be lost, which given the precarious state of cryosphere and the tipping points yet to be crossed - might well trigger more self-reinforcing feedbacks and those tipping points, which will ramp-up global warming tenfold... This will happen anyway, but will hasten if we lose aerosol masking... Game over. . It is 'game over' anyway... Because the cryosphere is in retreat and cannot be halted, likewise with runaway global warming, any notion that humans can avert the 'worse-case' scenario is pure dellusion and anthropocentrism.
