As an older drummer that always knew I had terrible technique, I recently made it a goal to go and learn proper technique. Of all the videos I've come across I've found your approach to be the most straight forward and clear to what needs to be happening. Thanks

I really struggle with the doublestroke roll. I've heard many instructors talk about pillow practice. Because there is 0 rebound from the pillow, how is it possible that the stick is returning up for the second bounce? The hands must be pulling it up right? Does this even make sense? Keep up the good work and the camo look !
@brettallen6113 жыл бұрын
@pēteris ēteris I will give that a try. It sounds logical. I watched my drum instructor do doubles using the push pull method on surfaces without rebound and I could not understand how the stick was able bounce back without it. It seemed he is pulling it back up without being aware of it. Either way I am not able to reproduce it myself. Thanks again for taking the time to reply Peteris!!!
@camiloops.official3 жыл бұрын
Great question Brett and thanks so much. Yes playing on a pillow means you won't be able to rely on the bounce. After practicing on a pillow all my drum rudiments became a lot cleaner. And yes the hands are pulling the stick up.
@brettallen6113 жыл бұрын
@@camiloops.official Thanks for taking the time answering my question. That was the affirmation I needed. Now I just need to figure out how to pull the stick up without rebound on the first stroke! lol. Keep up the good work.

You can do both. Do the grind, practice technique, often, long, focused. But always mix it up with playing your favorite songs, maybe even try out something you know is way out of your league, just to challenge yourself and discover the happy accidents along the way. And sometimes - just go nuts, play whatever, to hell with measures and time signatures, see where your growing musical mind takes you.

@@camiloops.officialok, here goes then... i mentioned having trouble playing really fast double strokes. Things im curious about with it is why? Am i trying too hard? Am i supposed to find the balance between holding sticks super loose ,or tight, relaxed, french grip, matched, how much finger to wrist ratio here when going for fast double strokes?...i never took band in school, and i am self tought.... probably knee deep in bad habbits and technique, but have managed well throught it all....just stuck on this ......still

"The flag is a good indication of where you're supposed to have your fulcrum." I used to go by something similar to this also, and I was even rather dogmatic about it, but watching the likes of Eric Moore, Nate Smith (he'll occasionally move the fulcrum further up, but 90% of the time is right at the butt end of the stick) and others absolutely tear it up with the fulcrum about as far back is it's possible to go really shook my philosophy. Academically, it seems like the "balance point" should be the obvious place to put the fulcrum, but I think there are other variables in play aside from just maximizing bounce. For example: Pros for "balance point" fulcrum: -The point at which the most work is transferred from your hand to the head of the drum. -Theoretically, this should maximize economy of motion--for any given amount of work done by the hands you should be able to produce more energy with a balanced fulcrum. In practical terms this is probably correct in many contexts. Pros for "butt end" fulcrum: -The obvious one is increased reach. -Less reliance on bounce makes the stroke more consistent across multiple surfaces. -A smaller movement is required to reach the same stick height. -Less reliance on vertical arm motion and large muscle groups in producing accents (When a stroke just pivots around the fulcrum, without lifting the arm, only the mass in front of the fulcrum contributes to the energy of the stroke. You can lift your entire arm to engage this mass by dropping it onto the surface. Therefore, the further back the fulcrum is placed, the heavier accents one can produce without the need to lift one's arm.) I think the biggest aspect is: -Maximizing the work of hands versus head helps you develop the hands, so while the balance point should be more efficient in an even playing field, it's rarely the case that there is an even playing field. In the end, I feel that any fulcrum placement between balance point and as far back as you're able to place it while keeping all of your fingers on the stick is viable. I don't think any one placement is superior to all others. If there is something that's superior, it's having a flexible fulcrum that you can change situationally.
@camiloops.official3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Lots of great information and I totally understand what you mean about the fulcrum placement. I occasionally play toward the butt of the stick, but it just depends on what I'm playing. Thanks again for you comment. Cheers :)
