I read this on Samuel L. Jackson's IMDB: "Like Christopher Walken, he makes films for the pleasure he gets out of acting, regardless of how the film turns out." Say what you will about this movie, but you just have to love any performance in which you can tell an actor is having fun. And that's why we all love Samuel L. Jackson lol

Brad Bird could have done The Spirit justice. He tried making an animated movie of it back in the 80s, but nobody would green light it even though the script was praised. The closest we will ever see is the pencil test trailer online

Given the trajectory of animation now and the success of movies like Into the Spiderverse and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, I think a stylish 2.5D animated Spirit movie that is animated and colored to look like the original comic, and directed by Brad Bird would be amazing.

Common issue with Millers, it seems. Same thing happened to Dennis. He went from being the self styled erudite intellectual snark vendor, to just crudely vomiting reactionary talking points. His material just stopped being clever, like his brain had become this blunt tool. Same thing happened with Frank. He became a real hack, and has severely damaged his reputation as one of the shining talents of the 80s and 90s. Because the work he's been putting in for decades now has just been trash.

It seems like with this movie, Frank Miller didn't receive any type of legitimate feedback on this movie's concept and tone while making it. A lot of these mistakes seemed easily correctable and avoidable.
@Elementa2006

This film really screwed up the source material. For one thing, the Spirit never had any powers in the comics, he was just a regular guy. The Octopus was the biggest departure from the comics, in the comics he was a mysterious crime boss who you never see his face. The comics were very experimental for the time, as Eisner really got creative with his writing and artwork and while Ebony White's design is problematic, the character was always treated with respect by the other characters with the Spirit treating Ebony more like an unofficial ward/work partner, with the two sharing a home life in their Wildwood Cemetery headquarters and he develops beyond his comic-relief minstrel stereotype as the series progresses. Eisner later introduced other non-caricature African-American characters, such as the no-nonsense Detective Grey, who defied the media stereotypes of the day. I recommend watch the 1987 TV movie, which had 80s Flash Gordon Sam J. Jones as the Spirit.

My dad and me saw this opening day and I shit you not we were the only two in there. So the best part of the experience is how we got to snark our way through the entire thing. Biggest issue with this movie can be summed up simply: PG-13 FRANK MILLER! . I believe that story that Korey told about the critic reacting to Sin City cuz I remember that was a thing back when it came out. A lot of Critics were doing the whole "How dare they release a movie like this so close to the Abu Ghraib Torture Photos".

I am a 45 yo father, probably one of the oldest people watching this movie. I am a single father to my Son, who is 14 now. My son got this movie for Christmas in 2021 from his uncle, so we put it in the VCR and started watching. By the end of the week he watched it 24 times. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just sitting there blankly staring. So i decided to make a netflix account and get this movie to see if I could maybe watch alongside him. I loaded in the movie and it started playing. This movie has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This movie reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories.

There’s a “The Spirit” made for TV movie, from the late 80’s. It was intended as a pilot and stars Flash Gordon in the title role. Here’s the thing. Even though it never went to series, it is still easily 10x better than this AAA misstep. Not entirely sure, but I think it can be seen on KZbin. Is definitely worth the watch.

Kung Fu Hustle is a decent movie - it does have character development. I can see how Americans might find the comedy stupid - but if you're familiar with star/director Stephen Chow, it's brilliant. He created a genre called "mou lei tou" cinema, which translates to empty headed comedy. It's meant to be silly.

@@weilim10 But... Comparisons to Looney Tunes aren't derogatory, it's just meant to provide a basis for how zany the action can get, 2022's The Bad Guys got similar comparisons yet no one will say it's a bad movie... And even then, the whole scene where the landlady chases the protagonist is a straight-up homage to the Coyote and Roadrunner's chases with the landlady crashing into a billboard and slowly sliding down!

This movie seems to be the definition of style over substance. The look and feel of it is nice, but what characters want, who they are, and how this world works is not made clear or made interesting. Oh well 🤷🏾‍♂ at least Sam Jackson looks like he's having a lot of fun.

43:47 but then, how good are Johansson & Mendes, _really,_ if they weren’t able to “act around/beyond” Frank Miller’s shit (or non-existent) direction🤔 You can’t even excuse it by saying Sam Jackson has so much more experience since Paulson is closer to Johansson’s & Mendes’ age groups and performed so much better (according to the DT guys here). Same for Gabriel Macht; evidence of being more of a pretty face than a capable actor🤷🏾‍♀️ FWIW: the pencil screen test is actually pretty interesting and its voice actors are 100x better than these well-known Hollywood types

Oh boy a Frank Miller the guy that made All star batman and Robin and it was cancelled by 2008. There’s no body gonna be saying “I’m the God damn batman” in this movie are they?

For what it's worth, Miller made this film out of a labor of love. Will Eisner is not only on the Mt. Rushmore of comics creators, but one of Miller's direct mentors. I cant speak the veracity of this next quote, but I've heard it attributed to Miller. "I didnt believe i was the man for the job. Honestly, I dont think anyone could truly capture what Will created with the comics on film. But if anyone was gonna butcher it then it should be me". I think he sincerely saw it as a loving tribute to his mentor. What a crazy guy.

As bad as this film is, it definitely looks cool. When Sin City took the world by storm, even Mobb Deep did a video with that style.

I remember how pissed off people were with The Spirit teaser trailer using the theme song from The Untouchables movie. He also used the line from Dick Tracy “I’m on my way”. People were groaning, how much of a rip-off it sounded like .

When I went to see this, everyone in the theater at one point just unanimously agreed this movie was a POS and openly started talking shit to the movie screen as a running commentary.

As a black man I'm so conflicted on The Spirit. It's not relevant for this post but I feel bad for wanting this film to fail and send the character back to obscurity. We middle aged black people have a word for that. Trifling. I was being trifling. Now I wish it had succeeded if nothing else then for the careers involved.

@@ninjanibba4259 Because while reading the comic book the depiction of Ebony White extremely problematic. This isn't usually a problem no matter how racist the era because black people were invisible in popular literature and films. Out of sight out of mind but that's not the case with Spirt it front and center

While this movie was bad, it sure was entertaining, because of Samuel L Jackson and Scarlett Johansson. It was like a low rent Sin City. TERRANCE OUT

This is 15 years old already! @16:18 @24:55 😂😂😂 Samuel L. Jackson is having a ball despite how problematic this is Visually this is interesting so it has that going for it Yes it is very ridiculous and at times like a cartoon But I cannot deny how much fun Samuel L. Jackson is having with this material It doesn't follow the source material 100% plus there were plenty of racist based characters originally so you understand the updates and omissions The women are terrific eye candy too

I love this movie because of how goofy it is. I like the 1987 version with Sam Jones. Without this movie, I wouldn't know who The Spirit is.
