Those are the great, but challenging, New Hampshire woods. Unlike many other such videos someplace else, there are not many, if any, perfectly straight sticks or trees, and all of the same diameter, of course, to make the perfect shelter. You must use creativity and adapt to that reality just like you do Doug. Thank you for the video.

Doug, your videos have an authentic ambiance to them that I appreciate/ No crazy music to spoil the natural sounds of your tasks and the woods I'm 78 years old and no longer able to go into the woods, but your videos bring back the sweet memories of being with my dad and siblings on many cold winter nights in the woods. There's got to be a message of persistence in your taking that tree down. Ha! God bless, brother. I hope your channel grows, and I'm praying to that end.

Thank you so much, Morris. You are around my father's age. So I was wondering about your memories of you with your Dad and siblings in the woods. What general year are we talking about? My grandparents had a plot of land years ago. It wasn't a camp, but wooden tent platforms my grandfather had built. It was near a lake. My Dad told me stories about them camping there.

My dad taught me how to do that with a tarp, he called it a "half Baker tent." A variation on the good old Baker tent (which is larger.) And how to make a pile of browse beneath the floor for insulation against the chill. Great video, glad to see the old bush tricks alive and well.

Hi Doug, that old tree didn't want to come down ,lol, but sheer grit and determination did it in the end. And the cheap knife survived all that chopping, amazing, I was a bit worried when stuff kept falling on you, I think I would have moved camp site, alot less work, but you always go the extra mile for us, and we appreciate that, tarp set up looked good, I take it you grout the top over you later on, hope you slept well. Thanks for another interesting video my friend, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, may your God go whith you, Stuart UK.

The stuff above me was just dead bark and small, dry rotted limbs. It looked worse in the video. Maybe it adds to the excitement? The whole tree was big enough that I didn't want it falling on me when I was sleeping. I thought it would come down much easier. But that's the way it goes

That tree. At first, I was thinking to myself, "Why doesn't he just use a saw?" .. and then realised that it was a part of a test of the survival knife. I sensed perhaps some frustration on your part when you were taking 'runs' at the tree (just fall please 😖) 😁. One way to stay warm / keep in shape though ..

Harbor Freight Knife blade is very strong. (With JB-Weld and Loctite Red, it is invincible!) It looks like a Molybdenum which is the strongest blade material. I see a little greenish color on it. I'm sure it's a Molybdenum. I have a $100 Kabar knife, but I like Harbor Freight knife too.

Doug, the way you launched yourself at that tree multiple times killed me! Lol. Shaking a dead standing tree like that is very dangerous as imb can break off and kill you. Something I would do. Lol. That tree proved to be a quite a challenge with a Rambo knife! Good work !
@DougShoeBushcraft
@DougShoeBushcraft Жыл бұрын
Yes. Felling a tree can cause parts of that tree to fall, or limbs etc from surrounding trees. Injury or death are possibilities in the activity. But in this case, I looked at the dead tree and surrounding trees. In my estimation, there wasn't anything to cause notable injury. But then the core of the dead tree was more solid than I had expected. If the top of the tree had snapped off and fallen on me, I could have been injured. But mostly it was punk wood and other light debris falling down on me. You can see me in the video trying to run from it, but still getting hit. You bring up an important point. A man not far from here was killed not long ago (last month if I remember right). He cut down a tree in his yard. It was a relatively small tree but as it was falling, it knocked a large limb off a nearby tree. The large limb landed on him and killed him. So I like to go out and have fun. I try to watch out for my own safety but there is always an element of danger. I accept some risk because I want to have fun and live life. I'm glad to hear that you are having fun as well.

Sadly, I can't keep up with all the channels I subscribe to, but I do like to pop in from time to time. That was one stubborn tree you had there. A silky saw would have made short work of it but that wouldn't have tested your knife. Good to see you again Doug. 😃

Nice to see you, Blackshack. That tree was hilarious. I decided to cut it down because I wanted that camping spot, and though the tree could likely fall on me. But then the thing just did not want to come down. The outside half or so of the tree was rotted, but the inside core was solid as anything

I did that trick with a tall rotten tree stump. I got it going back and forth pretty good, and walked away, when a friend yelled for me to jump. I had sauntered about 30 feet away, and I dove to one side. It came crashing down behind me! I guess each time the stump went back and forth, it had weakened and finally snapped. That's what friends are for.

Really interesting video, and glad the tree didn't fall on you. I like your minimalist approach to camping out. But I'm curious--why use a tarp at all if it's not going to rain? Just as a precaution in case the weather doesn't cooperate?
@DougShoeBushcraft
@DougShoeBushcraft 2 жыл бұрын
In NH you never really know if it's going to rain. Lowering my awning (making more of a peak tent) blocks wind and can trap some body heat. It's not drastic but can be a little warmer. But then with the awning up and the fire going it can trap heat from the fire

@DougShoeBushcraft
@DougShoeBushcraft Жыл бұрын
I sharpened it with a diamond sharpener, also from Harbor Freight. While I was at it, I put a more acute edge near the base of the blade for delicate tasks. I've been intending to post another video on the subject, but haven't yet.
