In this lesson we are going to take an in depth look at how to play the unplugged version of "Down In A Hole" by Alice In Chains.
This stripped down version of this great 90's hard rock classic, is simple yet very effective.
In this Down In A Hole unplugged guitar lesson I will show you a nice version to play of this great song that works well on just one acoustic guitar.
On the original live recording, Alice In Chains had a second guitarist helping them fill out the more intimate acoustic setting, but you won't need him here!
The intro is based around 3 simple chords and is the only time in the song that guitarist Jerry Cantrell uses fingerpicking to create the melodic material within those chords.
As the band comes in we continue to play the same three chords in a arpeggiated picking style. The picking here is pretty random so it is more about recreating the sound and the style instead of learning everything note-for-note.
The chorus gets a little bit more adventurous using a melody over drone a note-for-note, arpeggio picking and power chords.
This song doesn't use and barre chords and includes a few different simple techniques. Because of this I think it would be a great study for the beginning guitarist. There is nothing here that will challenge you very much. All around a great song that is very accessible.

Dirt, what an awesome album! I never considered them Grunge like most people when they came out. They had hard hitting riffs that rival a lot of hard rock/metal bands of the time. When I heard Them Bones for the first time, I about lost my mind. Dirt was a great follow up album from Facelift.

Great tutorial, but I have one small thing to add. During the prechorus, when Layne is singing "Down in a hole and I don't know if I can be saved...", Jerry is playing 9 10 9 7 on the D string. So, it's like what he plays at the beginning of the chorus, only one string down. You can see him playing this prechorus thing during the Unplugged performance.

Not sure what song your talking about but if his guitar is in an alternate tuning (low) it can cause fret buzz. Just a thought. These alternate tunings are often a bitch to dial in without spending a lot of time. it's SO COOL to have them shown to you! life/timesaver!

Actually, I don't think he misses the F# as much as I think the action is set too low on Jerry's guitar. If you listen to many songs on the MTV appearance, there's way too much fret buzz on every song.

what happened to the man in the box lesson? I watched it one day then went back to learn more of the song and can't find it anywhere. I know there are other people that have lessons of that song but I really like the way Carl brown teaches.

Watching the live unplugged version you can clearly see you're mixing up who's playing what. During the chorus Jerry plays the first part yiu show but only strums the other chords while the second guitar plays the single note melodies.

Cool lesson. Can anyone help me with the counting- when he goes from the G to F after the change? I get when he sings..."I want to fly...(stuck here) "But my wings have been torn, and I...."
