Says the current lock is as weak as the screws into the frame.. Goes ahead and reinvents a more complex lock that also screws into the frame.
@elliotth303 жыл бұрын
Yes, however the orientation of the screws is different, so with standard locks the screws if kicked would just push out, however with his version the screws are perpendicular to the direction of force - so theoretically it is as strong as the shear force of the screws or bolt instead of just the strength of the surrounding wooden frame :)
@MADMAX73303 жыл бұрын
@@elliotth30 Valid point, and to add to that wood screws are not designed for shear strength. This would need custom bolts.
@elliotth303 жыл бұрын
@@MADMAX7330 true, just looking at some tolerances at a data sheet for some wood screws - for a screw diameter of 3.5mm and a length of 20-50mm all have a sheer force of about 0.20Kn which seems to be 20kg. So theoretically with approx 4 or even 6 screws at most is no more that 120kg of force behind. I must admit that would certainly be enough to stop someone pushing or kicking.... But... When you compare that to, for example, a police handheld battering ram that can deliver a potential of 3 tonnes of impact force... I'm gonna take a quick guess and say it doesn't stand a chance 😂 Edit: however I suppose there could certainly be a business in it if you brought 38 of them for the single door frame, a total of 150 screws 😂
@varrjames1863 жыл бұрын
@@elliotth30 I agree that the screws are perpendicular but using force against the door would cause the screws to split the wooden frame. Either way though, surely the noise of kicking someone's door in would wake the occupants.
@grahamjohnson47023 жыл бұрын
@@varrjames186 you could not generate enough force to cause the perpendicular screw to split the frame, also splitting the frame depends on the quality of wood used and the method of fixing, but the most important thing is that the person trying to get in will have been seriously delayed in his/her attempt that they would have moved on.

It's not a bad idea but he marketed it completely wrong. He should have said this is an alternative to deadbolt/chain more clearly, found out roughly how many people use a deadbolt/chain and how big that market is and explained why people use a deadbolt/chain in the first place. He should have explained about how lockpicking (2 is binding) is a silent, non-destructive attack on a mortise lock and this device would give you extra security whilst you're asleep as it prevents that attack, the same as a deadbolt.
@Jimverse_3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the dragons' questions were pretty weird, what use does it have? Well why do people bolt their doors? They've been doing it for years. I think the truth was no-one wanted to invest in this guy and I don't blame them. "I'm a bit shell shocked to be honest." "Well well done anyway!" "Ok."
@grzzltn3 жыл бұрын
Chains are the weakest for this purpose and the most vulnerable (they designed to let the door open ajar, through that opening it can be cut), then it's only a matter of bolt vs this. I can see it as an alternative of a door bolt, easier/simpler action, potentially stronger (although has smaller contact with door), but that's another topic. And I don't know why some people complain of him not bringing a "functional, scaled down" door as a demonstration, it's obvious from the design that it'll do that part of the job and demonstrating how it works the mock-up door is a good solution.

Now I'm no physicist, so someone can feel free to correct me... but the A frame principle he's talking about is when load is pushed down onto the A from the top, that's why roofs are built on a row of wooden beams that look exactly like A shapes (layman's terms, they are actually called trusses). Workman tables are sometimes built like it too on top of 2x A shaped legs each side so it's super sturdy. The strength comes from applying force at the top of the A, downwards. NOT when your just pushing the A structure from the side. The wooden A frame would just fall over 🤣🤣🤣 🤦♂️

Why? His selling point is that it's a more secure lock when someone is trying to kick your door in. It's not required for internal doors.

@@mauharley that's why front doors have mortice locks and not bolts these days 😉. Internal bathroom/bedroom doors would benefit more as they are where you generally put bolts. A much bigger market than adding security to a mortice locked door

A frames are strong under compression and the A frame on that isnt even pointing in the right direction it has no support in the direction of force infact if it was a real aframe you could push it over and look wouldnt you know it when given a sheer force it essentially bent out the way and the mighty a frame fell over
@cody49993 жыл бұрын
Hypothetically it's not a bad idea, but you could also just put in a dead bolt and ensure the frame is reinforced and you're using long screws and good gear.
