From a sales stand point Drake has some of the highest numbers of all time. I think those numbers are inflated because of the streaming generation. If bunch of people play a few songs from his albums repeatedly, it counts as an album sale. Overall Drake's vanilla rap reaches a wider audience just like the ice cream. He cannot connect with the social/political undertones of other artist. If you listen to each one of his albums back to back he has similar songs/vibes on every album which shows his lack of creativity/growth as an artist. The man makes music that degrades women / all fans for being less financially successful than himself. Many rappers do but switch their styles up to add variety. His lack of versatility means he isn't a GOAT contenders for me. Club hits don't make you the GOAT in my book.

Drake may have brought mainstream legitimacy to the Toronto scene. But being from here...I can tell y'all that there was a time when Toronto hip hop was all about the ART, especially in the 90s/early 2000s. Since Drake blew up, now it's all about riding his wave and copying his style/sound...the city lost its originality. Btw, Toronto was never called "the 6" before Drake...it was either T-Dot, T.O. or the 416.
@x23471
@x23471 5 жыл бұрын
Had to respond because that's my EXACT sentiment. Toronto had some of the most unique sounds but was always overlooked. K-os("I wish I knew natalie portman"), Shad ("Rose Garden") just as a few examples were hits that didn't quite propel their careers into superstardom. Drakes little Wayne cosign did and thus he became a legitimate rap act for the past decade. But many torontonians didnt champion toronto hip hop legends like k-os, and thus everyone just crowned drake Canadas rap star because he was and is the most poppin atm

TTT B You gotta remember tho...Drake already had a huge buzz before Wayne. He put out his 3 mixtapes, then put out Best I Ever Had and there was a bidding war over him before Cash/Young Money signed him. K-os and Shad aren't even the same audience as Drake (Shad is my personal GOAT when it comes to Canadian MCs)...those guys are underground with a slight mix of indie rock.

I dont think drake is Goat status, but he is a superstar . I also understand that he doesnt talk about experiences outside of his own, but I often feel that he misses really great opportunities to touch on touchy subjects. He's easily digestible to the mainstream media, basically he isn't problematic. I heard daylyte say "do you know the biggest difference between drake and Micheal Jackson "? Micheal made music that mattered. When I'm in my feelings and want to hear someone spit some dope lyrics are bars , drake does not pop in my head . 🤷🏾‍♀️ great video as always .

One could argue that it all comes down to the money/income-factor. Although it is an interesting idea once Drake starts to put major focus on on-going social issues (especially the race/minority related ones) then his bank account might take a direct hit. And in overall I don't think the powers that be of the industry would like that.

I believe this proves Justin could make a GOAT piece on anyone. Compared to other so-called Hip-Hop elitist I'm a HUGE Drake fan. Hated "Views" but besides that rock with all his albums. However, that comes from my acceptance of who and what he is. I know I grade Drake on a curve. He raps better than 95% of the game, but how much of it is him? I choose to believe that when it's really dope and introspective, it's Drake. I believe it's him for the obvious reason: How could you let another person write out your most personal thoughts? This is with the knowledge that - a guy who should be in a GOAT piece, btw - Royce Da 5'9" wrote Dr. Dre's dedication to his deceased brother. And this is where it gets a little deep, because Dre OBVIOUSLY to ME would never be included in these discussions. Neither would Kanye or Easy-E or Diddy... But where really does it stop? For me? At Drake. He's the dividing line. He'd never be on my top ten all-time list, but I'm not arguing too much with anyone who has him there.

Drake has been involved in more traditional hip hop situations with respected hip hop figures than all the top guys in his generation put together. He's had to fight all of his battles without the culture pushing for him to win. In a time where ppl remind you of your Ls everyday in the comment section. Despite criticism to do what would be respected by hip hop purest he did things his way, as all other goats have. Drake is no where near being the greatest rapper in terms of technical skills but this GOAT convo is based on overall including skills, attributes,catalog, accolades, impact, and longevity. He doesn't have to rate the highest in all categories to be A goat, just enough combined to surpass his peers and/or predecessors.

"DRAAAAAKE?" Nah, he's really the most polarizing artist I've ever seen. He's the most successful rap artist statistics wise, with crossover appeal like we've never seen before. Everytime his credibility takes a serious hit that would kill any other rapper, he comes out unscathed. I want to totally discredit him because of ghostwriting and stealing sounds, but it's hard to do so. Take Care is his only classic and that arguably changed the entire atmosphere of music. Never been a huge fan, but I have to respect what he's done.

@MrGNugget 5 жыл бұрын
@@sanantoballa4834 It may not be that much of a hyperbole if you really think about it. We have a bunch of people who can't really sing making R&B now. Artists like 6lack, Bryson Tiller, and PartyNextDoor come to mind. The whole sound of R&B changed since 40, The weeknd, and Drake teamed up to make Take Care. I know rap has always been melodic, but it has been dialed up to 11 since this dropped. I may be sound crazy, but I do accredit these things to him.
@sanantoballa4834
@sanantoballa4834 5 жыл бұрын
MrGNugget Definitely agree when it comes to the R&B sound he and 40 (Weeknd too) helped cultivate. But as you said, melody has always been in Hip Hop and most would consider Kanye/Cudi as the main influencers in Drake’s melodic style. Kanye took the risk first and Drake built upon that.

Brother, great piece as always. I'm in this camp that I'm not, not a Drake fan, but i'm also not a Drake fan at the same time. It's a complex relationship between my fandom and his music.
