When doctors told me I had osteoarthritis I started searching for solutions and I found about the inflammation issue. I started a keto diet, today low carb diet, and I feel much better. Low carb diets reduce inflammation and help a lot

I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my early 60’s, but probably the diseasewas there already many years earlier. My fulltime job was gardener, on hands and knees a lot of the time and always on the move. I have never been obese or even overweight. Wear and Tear was the likely cause of my hip pain. Now I am almost 70, retired for two years and the pain comes and goes in the course of a year. I hardly ever take ibuprofen but if I do it works. I do tai chi, other exercises, walk and undergo radon therapy once a year. This therapy works a dream. I try and avoid any operation and artificial hip replacement. So far so good. Thank you for your informative video’s. They are very helpful.

Thank you for this! I was told that it’s not from inflammation, but from wear and tear. I knew that wasn’t the case because, firstly, I’ve been careful with my joints my whole life. But, secondly, when I’m eating non inflammatory foods, my pain is close to zero. Literally an hour after eating sugar, my joints go crazy for a few days. Also, movement does really help me.

I have severe hip osteoarthritis 😢. I only found this out after 7 years of back pain. I suffer from knee pain. Im on the waiting list for teo hip replacements. Ive had hip arthroscopy (key hole surgery) which hasnt done anything. My life is ruined, im im pain everyday, ive give up football, running and the gym. I cant even play with my kids anymore and will have to give up work soon enough. Which this will end my current world that im struggling in anyways 😢. The only thing that is keeping my mindset positive is: im on thr waiting list and there is always someone worse off

I've learnt somethings & I've had a very important point reinforced, that is "Use it or Lose it!" When I'm feeling stiff all over my body I do stretches, then hop on my Treadmill & then Rowing machine. Then I workout on my Bullworker for strength, and after an hour, I feel like a man half my 70yr old age! So much more flexible. The fact that there won't be any damage done to the joints during the exercise phase, is so reassuring. Thank you Doctor👍 p.s: 9yrs ago, my Orthopaedic Surgeon highly recommended I have an immediate double knee & double hip joint replacement, but I declined & had my left knee meniscus removed only! I live a full healthy life, relatively Pain Free.

The idea that osteoarthritis is progressive and nothing can be done is outdated and this is a great video as to why. Not only can the pain response be decreased through the desensitiazation, as Dr Furlan explained, but the local inflammation and damage can be controlled through particuar exercise. Great video, as always.

You could research Grounding, also called Earthing. The expert on this is Clint Ober and he has many videos and a website. I’ve been carefully studying his information and think it has validity. It can’t hurt, and it’s worth a try. It’s too cold out right now, but I will definitely be trying it for my hip and back pain. I will also buy a grounding pad for the house. Unfortunately, they don’t ship their products to Canada, but we have some items up here. Just a thought. Actually, when we had a couple of milder days, I tried it outside and I think it helped, temporarily, but maybe my imagination. I try everything, if it’s not harmful. Any improvement is welcome.

I have been having spasms down my leg and went to 2 different urgent care facilities and the X ray revealed Hip Osteoarthritis and saying it is mild even though the pain is severe but you say severe pain doesn't mean the disease is severe having been given anti-inflammatory meds and muscle relaxants and creams Epson salt baths the spasms continue walking from the living room to the bathroom. I do exercise 7 days a week and definitely need to lose weight. This video is easy to understand

I'm baffled. I injured my left shoulder in the gym 6 years ago. I had progressive pain for all those years, until X ray, then CT scan and MRI showed that virtually all the cartilage was destroyed. I felt I had no option but to go ahead and have a shoulder replacement. However, I have always been slim and active (apart from pregnancies!) and have no signs of osteoarthritis anywhere else in my body - and I'm saying this because all my other joints move freely, although a couple of fingers are becoming harder to bend. Also had Dexascan last year which showed low risk of fracture. I honestly don't understand what my body is playing at. How could I lose cartilage and be grinding bone on bone in one joint only? I must be missing something. So frightened it will happen to other joints. 😢

I have CKD and have extremely painful veins in my legs (stage 3a), my Dr tells me it’s all part of the process and their is nothing safe l can take to eliminate the pain l am in. I like the fact that you tell us about the downside to certain supplements not just the good side. I take moringa powder, and have been told not to take it. Would you PLEASE do a video on this product. If l discontinue it l suffer constipation, swelling of ankles and general pain from osteoarthritis. Many thanks once again. Interestingly, it started when I was in my 20's and a good weight. 50 years later it has progressed but I move a lot and take Turmeric every day and generally only feel pain when I get up in the morning. I'm still trying to eat a healthier diet but it seems to be a lost cause as my body get really cranky when it isn't fed the carbs it wants.

There’s a surgical procedure in which a gel-like substance called hyaluronic acid is injected into the knee. It’s meant to replace the cartilage in the knee. There’s also platelet rich plasma surgery in which your own blood is spun in a machine and injected into your knee. It’s meant to facilitate the healing of knee pain. I’ve never had knee surgery so I can’t attest to whether these procedures work. Whenever I have knee pain, I get a massage and use over-the-counter ointment.

Hi Leonard, I know these procedures but I rarely recommend them to my patients. If the person doesn't do the 4 things I mention in this video there is no point in getting those expensive injections! And, when a person do the 4 things I mention in this video they get so much better that they don't need any injection.

Thank you so much for this. My recent X-rays show mild arthritis in lower back, left hip and left knee but have just been through a flare up which made me wonder what it would be like if the changes were severe. Disrupted sleep, or no sleep. However it is improving, less pain freer movement but leaves me thinking, why is it better when the arthritis is obviously still there. I do need to lose some weight but interesting that it is not just the weight on the joints. I will be eating a more plant based diet and pushing myself with the exercise instead of guarding myself. I will also be watching all your videos. Feel more hopeful for the future.

You are my go to doc for chronic pain. Great vid. For arthritis, I like these tips too: These are really great tips, doc. Here are also some tips your viewers could use: 1. Regular Exercise: Engage in low-impact exercises like swimming, walking, or cycling to maintain joint flexibility and strengthen muscles. Consult with your healthcare provider or a physical therapist to create a suitable exercise plan. 2. Balanced Diet: Consume a well-balanced diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fish. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish may help reduce inflammation. 3. Medication Adherence: Take prescribed medications as directed by your healthcare provider. Consistency is key in managing symptoms and preventing flare-ups. 4. Joint Protection: Use assistive devices or adaptive tools to ease strain on your joints. For example, ergonomic tools in the kitchen or using a cane for added support while walking. 5. Hot and Cold Therapy: Apply heat or cold packs to affected joints to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. Heat can help relax muscles, while cold can numb pain and reduce swelling. 6. Manage Stress: Practice stress-reducing techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga. Stress can contribute to inflammation and exacerbate arthritis symptoms. 7. Adequate Rest: Ensure you get enough restorative sleep. Establish a regular sleep schedule and create a comfortable sleep environment. 8. Weight Management: Maintain a healthy weight to reduce stress on your joints. Losing excess weight can alleviate pain and improve overall joint function. 9. Regular Check-ups: Keep regular appointments with your healthcare provider to monitor your condition, adjust medications if necessary, and address any concerns. 10, Stay Informed: Educate yourself about rheumatoid arthritis to better understand your condition. Being informed empowers you to make lifestyle choices that positively impact your health. Remember, it's crucial to work closely with your healthcare team to tailor a management plan that suits your specific needs and to address any concerns or changes in your condition promptly.

There is no such thing as unreal pain. All pains are real and all pains are in the mind. Nobody can separate the mind from the body. The brain is connected with everything and it controls everything, even pain sensations.

I have severe osteoarthritis of the hip joint, in fact, my hip joint is totally destructed. I’m taking a course on physiotherapy (I’m 77 years old) I do cycling, half squats & push 5 kgs with my legs. Will that harm my joints ? Then I raise my legs with weight tied on it. Finally, the stretches are done. That hurts. Am I going right ? Please reply. Thank you.

What do you say to a vegan elder female that has osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease? Are there any new innovations in nature that will help replenish the cartilage or is it gone for good? Thank you so much for your videos. I’m going to see if you have one on vegan diets for this. I am on the slender side, so calories are not an issue. 💫

Just the other day I saw an X-ray of my right hip. Oh my, it was for a lay-person to see that half of the top of ball of the joint was GONE! Yes, gone, used up, no cartilage left, bone substance no longer existing. I was born with malformed hip joints. My doctor said it is necrosis. I had to swallow. For the last six weeks I'm taking between four and six Metamizole 500mg pain-killers per day. I have now urinary gravel because of the pain-killers, which do not really kill the pain, at least they make it bearable. So going to the bathroom is no fun either. Osteoarthritis runs in the family, one of my grand-dads had it and his sister as well. My left hip joint was already replaced 8 years ago, now the right hip is due, too. I was lucky to get an appointment in a hospital next week. What to do when you have to get around in your apartment with a rolling walker on bad days, and crutches on good ones? Standing up for more than two minutes, forget it, sitting down will eventually hurt, going to bed, that is, swinging your legs in to lay down, hurts! I'm hoping so much for getting a hip-replacement procedure this year or very early next year. Even if it means being on physical rehab over the holidays.
