New fan here..I was the Queen of yo-yo dieting for years and couldn't understand why I was so hungry all the time. I tried cutting back on my food portions while doing low fat, and then all I'd have to do is eat a piece of pie or a couple brownies as a treat once in awhile and I'd put on three-four pounds overnight, and any weight loss would stop for a week. It was Insane..I was blowing up while feeling deprived. I went to an obesity doctor who recommended a low-glycemic diet; easily said: no white sugar and no white flour. And I finally lost some weight while feeling satisfied. However, I kept hitting plateaus that were two months in duration and my obesity doctor just laughed it off and said I'm doing fine..not to worry..and it will come off. But I want explanations, and coming here I've found them explained in ways I can understand. Thank you Dr. Ekberg - you've helped my confidence level immensely. I've lost 27 pounds since last Thanksgiving and know I will reach my goal of being a normal, healthy weight very soon.

Four weeks ago I was diagnosed with DMII and I went on LCHF/healthy keto with IF, after I said no to medication. I listened to my body, and after a short time I discovered eating less and cutting out carbs meant I wasn’t hungry. I’m now happy with a keto coffee in the morning and I eat dinner around 6 or 7 at night. That’s all I need, my body is telling me it’s happier. My sleep has improved so much, too. I started to take berberine to kick me into ketosis. It’s amazing. Thanks for all your great info, Dr Ekberg. I’ve been watching your videos every day and they help so much 🤩 I’ve already lost 5kg and my blood glucose levels have dropped dramatically. It’s wonderful to say no to medication and see my doctor’s surprise Pikachu face when she checks my blood glucose levels! Haha

I hv been doing IF mostly 16:8 weekly and mybe 20:4 once a week for the past 8 mths...started at 80kg and now lowered my weight to 71kg. I workout wt weights 4/week , run 3/wk (15km/wk total) & cycle 2/wk (130-150km/wk)...no problem doin those workout/run/cycling while fasting...keen follower of your channel & learner soo much from you. Big thanks to u Dr, wish i know abt this IF thingy long time ago...

Dear Dr Ekberg I've been diagnosed with pre diabetes. Ever since I've heard you in the videos I've started fasting 20:4 .. And eating OMAD. Your videos have infused a ray of sunshine in body and I feel so good. One month now and my energy level is skyrocketing always. I don't feel any starvation as initially I felt for a few days. You are doing a yeoman's job. I'm waiting for my lipid results now and will share good news hopefully.

Diabetic type 2, following a modified keto diet, lowered carbs to less than 20 grams a day, no sugar, low salt. Only have two meals a day, and sometimes an evening snack. Went from 225 on 4/17 to 125 on 5/30. I hope I'm on right track. Thank you for your videos.

@Traveling Pair, that drop is great, what is your blood sugar running now? What has your last AIC been? My morning sugar was 121 mg/dL, A1C is now 5.4%. You are doing a great job, please do keep it up! On Metformin 500 mg ER twice a day. Drop Jardiance. On the lowest dose of Ozempic 0.25 mg, hope to be off that too soon.

The benefits of giving your gut a rest is astounding. Weight loss, better sleep, more energy the list goes on. Just recently found out about IF and insulin resistance. I have lost more weight and changed my body composition in just a few months than with dieting and exercise my whole life !! I am so happy and upset at the same time ! Lol ..hate that it took me over 20 yrs to find out the real culprit. Really good video and great information, thank you so much for all this life saving information. I love Intermittent fasting I usually do 16/8 just have to work on reducing my carbs more ! Lol working on it !

@@drekberg I was pleasantly surprised by how my body has adapted to intermittent fasting so quickly, I only eat one meal in the evening, I do allow myself a light snack of either dark chocolate (minimum 70%) or fruit or nuts, like pecan or walnuts

Keto & IF 20/4, sometimes OMAD, for 10 months now. Giving up sugar at the very beginning stopped my cravings, & the need to snack went too. Best thing I ever did. Thanks for sharing this important information, in a way that's easy to understand. & Take care too. ❤🙂🐶

Hello doctor- I started IF KETOOMAD yesterday. I’m looking to lose 100lbs - I’ve had small success before with IF AND KETO BUT I’m hooked on do by them together. I believe this is going to be the special tool i need to lose the weight. I’m not a diabetic yet. But I am 42 and needing to finally get healthy. I just subbed too!

I am 63 and have been a recreational competitive triathlete for 30 years. In 2018 I had 2 stents put in after feeling bad after a race. I was very confused. There was no explanation by the doctors and I was put on the protocol of many drugs. After 2 months and with many hours of my research I quit all drugs and went on a Keto diet. I am back to racing and all my times are the same as before.

Thanks doc. I do keto and 18/6 IF, but I made the mistake of over stuffing myself during the eating period that I got a hemorrhoid LOL! Now I see why many pregnant women get it. Maybe in your next video you can show us the proper way of doing IF and the dangers of what can happen if not done properly.

Often the blood glucose I woke up with stays pretty much the same until I eat. Usually only one meal a day. My blood sugars are rock stable now. Even during extended fasting they vary little.

I do OMAD for 2 straight days and water fast for 3 days, been doing that for 5 months now, I’ve lost 45 pounds to date ! And I have the best blood sugar result ever, and my Blood Pressure returns to normal! WOw!!!!

I used to digest all these information (even the graphs!) through academic presentations of many Keto and IF speakers in KZbin. Not very easy to understand for the public who are not familiar with academic the way of presenting information. Having stumbled upon this video cements my knowledge on Low Card and IF. I am a Type 2 diabetic for over 20 years. I take both Lantus (24 hour lasting insulin), & Humulin R (mealtime 8 hr insulin). Have been doing Keto + IF for over a year, and added OMAD on May 1st after quitting insulin so I could burn more body fat. However when I quit Insulin my blood sugar levels went from levels of 4.2 - 5 2 mmol/L while on Insulin to levels of 5.7 - 6.5 mmol/L when off regardless how strict my diet was. My Beta Hydroxybuterate levels got as high as 3.1 mmol/L so I was definitely in Ketosis. But because I have been Insulin Resistant for so long my sugars would possibly take YEARS to come down; which I do not have the patience for since I want to burn fat NOW! But since my sugars are still high (5.7 - 6.5 mmol/L 2 hrs after a KETO meal) I still NEED to take insulin. I felt great, lost 17 lbs in the 18 days I was off insulin; but ended up in the hospital emergency room with a mild case of Diabetic Ketoacidosis. So now I'm back on both insulins so basically I'm screwed!

So monitor your ketone levels and take enough insulin to keep it in moderate range. Don't be afraid to let your glucose up slightly in the short term. Moderately high glucose is not dangerous in the short term. Keep learning and trying.

@@drekberg Thanks Dr. My Endo has lowered my insulin dosages, and I will monitor my blood sugar and ketone levels. It's just really nice seeing B.S. numbers like 4.3 - 5.3 AFTER YEARS of seeing 10.4 - 16.4 mmol/L.

I have started using a. GM which helps me monitor my Bzg 24x7. I no longer snack, eat dinner at home, 4 oz of protein and lots of salad and veggies with no sauce or dressing. No acoholof any kind, no sodas, no bread or pasta, no sugars. I consume Applecider vinegar befor going to bed. BG has stayed in range more than 77% of the time. some 15 hrs. then goes uto 136 max after a meal. CGM has been invaluable for checking the trend.

I do LC + IF. I break my fast with a cup of black coffee with sea salt. By around lunchtime my fasting, if not counting my coffee intake, would be around 18 hrs.

Just had a visit with my doc today and even though he's fresh and young he's dogmatic about the traditional definition of insulin resistance and how it relates to fasting. Always wants to recommend another insulin forcing drug. My BG hasn't been below 140 in several months! Today I'm 20 hours in on a ? fast and my BG is 117! All I have otherwise is 10 units of base insulin taken last night before bed.

Thanks for the formula for health. Carbs are a runaway habit. Forests are laid bare by ploughed fields to produce those tempting carbs. Millions of restaurants, frequent advertising and cooking videos help us to find ingenious ways to pack our bodies with more food than we need, creating cravings. So an increasing percentage of our day is spent eating and paying homage to Bacchus. Armageddon?

Thanks for the info.. i enjoy your unbiased nutritional information... i have lost 70 pounds since november 2018.. A1c was 10.5 in november, 2018.. as of march.. it carne down to 5.3... following low carb... i basically stopped eating grains and no sugars. . Ive been on an 8 hour eating window for a few weeks.. i slowly got into that fasting period. . Also.. i have a theory on sugar.. since the liver is used to filter toxins like alcohol, etc.... maybe the body views fructose as a toxin?.. which is why it has to go first through the liver?.. thanks again for your informative videos..

I don't think of natural fructose in fruit as a toxin, but it is curious why the body is so limited in processing such a common molecule. Then again it was always available in very small quantities in narture.

I would love your input with people who are on HRT during menopause and men for decreased levels. All with symptoms corrected by HRT. How does this all play into eating and maintaining proper insulin sensitivity and proper fat adaptation. Other ideas to naturally increase sex hormones. You speak continously about cortisol and insulin. But never about estrogen and testosterone. Maybe a segment on HRT the do's and don'ts ... And how it plays a role in your body. Thanks, Doug

@@gtm5650 Most of my exercising is hiking in the Sierra Nevada mountains and foothills but I swim, bike and lift weights also. It amounts to about 2600 calories a day. I used to be an ultra runner but now maintain a triathlon training schedule. I no longer compete at age 74 however.

Unless you are losing more weight than you want it is not a problem. Otherwise try three meals in a 6-8 hour period. Add more healthy fats. Pour it on everything.

went from 120 hab1c to 41 in 2 months doing this, chicken and broccoli twice a day within 4hrs, sometimes steak and peas/green beans/cabbage only drinking water aswell, gym 5x a week, lost stone and half too, feel 100x times better don't get hungry anymore either

What about the studies that say that when has insuline resistence then the body consumes lean body mass first and not fat. So what we do about it. We dont want the lean mass to be consumed.

I have a question but would like to see a complete video expliaing the answer. my question is: we hear that red meat can cause cancer, maybe thats not true if we eat organic grass fed meet, but we know also that red meat increase acidity of the body and also increase (Mtor hormon) thats is related to cancer causing, so how first those on carnivore claim healthy? does cancer occur in acidic body? so eating meat causing acidic body, eating vegies turn body to alkaline? sorry I dont know how to put my question but cancer is something in my family and i try to avoid it by understanding and following healthy diet( ketogenic diet) . execuse me for long question

After the massive heart atrack in March, when they also discovered my diabetes, I've followed a very low carb diet, my blood sugar dropped from over 400 to almost normal levels, without metformin, even though the doctored prescribed it to me. Only in the hospital they gave me Lantus for 2 weeks after the heart attack. I have also lost 12 kg from March until today, from 74 kg I have now 62, with no hunger and no significant effort. What you say is very true. I want to mention that for a month I've also eaten only 600 calories a day, 3 meals a day, at 8 in the morning, at 12 and last meal at 18, no snacks. I don't know what will happen with my body from now on, how I will manage my atherom plaque :(. Doctors say it is irreversable....

Hi Dr Ekberg, I’ve been trying two meals a day intermittent fasting but when I played a golf competition last Sunday, I felt exhausted. Does that mean my blood sugar was too low? I ended eating dried fruit. Is that the right thing to do?

Short term it is right to eat some sugar. Long term it will perpetuate the problem. If you run out of steam you are probably not fat adapted (or maybe dehydrated). IF works much better for most people on a keto or low carb diet. Be patient.

Doctor, my wife is a Type 1 diabetes and have hypo thyroid. She started low carb foods (no cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli) from first April 2019 to till date. She drinks turmeric tea and fenugreek water and the resultant sprout is also used in food as raw. Her blood sugar level is down from 323 to 145 (Random). she is also doing exercise twice a day(combining your 3 Bird posture in to it). Her TSH have come down to 2.55 from 5.15. Thanks doctor for your tutorials. Can pancreas be made to produce insulin so that she can completely stop insulin injection? Her doctor have not reduce the dosage of insulin ( But he has reduced one tablet) and have not reduced the dosage of Thyroxin (used to take 75 gms a day). May she reduce without consulting him? Thank you Krishnan Narayanan for sharing your story. That is great. I am so happy your wife has noticed a positive change. Typically Type 1 is considered irreversible, but you should never say never. There is some research that suggests fasting and autophagy may stimulate regeneration of beta-cells. I cannot give you advice on medication, only your doctor can do that, but realize that as carbs go down and she becomes less insulin resistant, the medication will need to come down at some point, but it requires careful monitoring.

My dad had that doctor problem as well. Advocate for lowered dosage like crazy or she may go too low. A continuous glucose monitor will keep you on track as you modify the meds. She’s lucky to have you keep an eye on her. Good luck!

Why does IF have to be about skipping breakfast only? Why not dinner? Doesnt that make more sense as one goes to bed on a light stomach and not burden the digestive system whilst inactive? I have been skipping dinner after having lunch around 2 pm and then having breakfast the next morning around 10 am - hence fasting about 18 hrs and it works just great. Sleeping on an empty stomach is best as you sleep much better. Try it!

That's a great point. You can skip either meal. Most people find it easier to skip breakfast though. As long as you give yourself 3-4 hours between dinner and bedtime you'd be fine.

34 year old male type 1 diabetic had it for 20 years. I'm trying fasting as well, but what about my basal insulin it's a long-acting they say up to 30 hours. I find myself pretty insulin resistant right now. What about type 1 diabetics and fasting and getting a hold of insulin levels to manipulate to use for fat loss?

One thing I would add, for me at least, the last week I've done 18 & 6, until yesterday at around 2pm, i ate just that once but it was almost all carbs (plate of homemade Nachos with cheese and peppers), this morning, my glucose tested at 139 and slowly went up through this morning to an all time high of 160, only in the last 1.5 hour has it fallen quickly. It would almost seem that having ate the way I did, (still well below 50g carbs even at that meal), I induced an insulin release that had me waking this morning knowing my glucose was high. Normally I keep my carb intake around 20g or less daily. Is it possible that I'm causing myself to become even more insulin resistant?

I've thought the same thing. I can't eat an apple or piece of whole wheat bread without my sugar shooting up nearly 100 points in an hour. But I can't seem to find anything on the internet that says it causes you to become more resistant.

many thanks for all your videos, doctor. I have been able to lose about 11 lbs in a span of 5 months with IF and lc diet. I' will know if a1c has improved in my next blood test. I'm also hypertensive. last time when I was at the doctor's office my bp numbers were higher. I would like to lower my bp with diet alone and get off the medication if possible. do you have any advice for lowering bp as well? my bmi now stands at 25. many thanks

Thank you Katherine Gregory. I really appreciate your feedback and so glad that you like them. I wouldn't get my hopes up, about T1D but I wouldn't rule it out either. There is some research that suggests that beta cells can be regenerated with extended fasting. With Nutrition Response Testing you can also find out if specific things are interfering with recovery.

I do OMAD in the morning...10:30 AM or so and works great for me. I have always done better not eating at night. Then throw in a 48 hour fast once a week. I used to do 16/8 but that is actually barely fasting. It takes anywhere from 8 to 12 hours to digest what you just ate so fasting doesn't start the second you put down the fork and swallow the last bite. Even if you digest in 8 hours that is still just 8 hours of fasting MAX. I don't need to lose weight but OMAD has been the easiest and most consistent way I have ever found to eat and never felt better

You can do say 20/4, I do it between say 2:30 to 6:30. I spread out the meal just too much to eat at one sitting. The longer the fast time the better with IF. I workout in the morning so eating is out. If I worked out at night instead it would make sense to eat in the AM.

Dear Dr. Ekberg. Each time ur video have a valuable informations. I think patients needs to study medicine to finish with the diabetes problem and not taking pills or medications. Understanding diabetes is the key to reverse it. I have a question Dr. Ekberg : I'm monitoring my glucose continuously through libre free style. I have observe when I start sport in the range of 60 to 65% from heart rate my glucose levels rise. Do u have explanation for that?? Thx a lot for what u r doing.

Exercise is stress. The body releases cortisol to generate blood sugar to cope with the stress. At 60-65% you are burning mostly fat, especially if you are fat adapted, so there is a very minor increase in cortisol. The cortisol/blood sugar is not a problem though, since exercising muscle is very insulin sensitive.

Hi Dr. I am a 63 yr old insulin resistant with hupothyroidism, on Metphormin and Livothyroxin. I started keto 20 days ago. I suddenly stopped feeling hunger or cravings. I intermittent fasted twice but I got diarrhea after each time. Besides other flu symptons. Two days ago I developed so much hunger, to the extent of having stomach pain and growling. I have done everything exactly the same, why now, what could be happening to me? Please help me

Can't say without more information. I would just go to low carb and let the body stabilize. Then try again, maybe more gradually. It could be any number of unrelated factors.

My BG does starting to go down however I am wondering why my BG is always high in the morning (110-120) and gone up to 140-150 right after an hour exercise in the morning? What if you've been Insulin Resistant for over 20 years and need to take exogenous insulin including Lantus which is basically a 24 hour long lasting insulin; even though you are doing a strict Keto diet with IF (for over a year), and eating OMAD 3 - 4 days per week ( added recently)? I'll be 60 in October - I don't have YEARS to wait for my IR to "repair" itself so I can get off of taking insulin so that I can burn some body fat!

Then you want to try longer fasts. You are probably so insulin resistant that you need more than 24 hours fasting for your cells to consider burning stored fat. Jason Fung has a great book on fasting. With longer fasts it can go very quickly, but it needs to be closely monitored, since you can easily become over medicated when you stop carbs altogether.

Thank you cocorito Rosales for asking. The answer is; everyone is different. Days, weeks, months, years - who knows? However, how long will it take to reverse insulin resistance is the wrong question. The real question is - "How long do you want to stay healthy?" For most people the answer is - " For the rest of my life." Here's what we need to understand about that. The way to get healthy and the way to stay healthy is the same - that is, by adopting a healthy lifestyle and eating the right kinds of real whole, natural foods that maintain balance in your body. And by getting the appropriate amount of physical activity and maintaining a joyous, harmonious emotional state. Therefore it doesn't matter how long it takes. Don't be in such a hurry. It's going to take as long as it takes. It won't change what you need to do. Wanting it to be done quickly just creates more stress. You have the rest of your life to do it. There will be some variation of amounts of carbs, fat, protein and length of fasting along the way, but the basic principles that work for you are what works for you. They are not going to change. So basically, whatever you have to do reverse a condition is what you need to keep up to maintain it. If you think that you will some day be done, it probably means that you plan to go back to eating junk and develop the problem again. Don't think that you will ever be "done" living a healthy life style. However, not ever being done, is a good thing. It's called life.

The new dogma is for everyone to skip breakfast. The previous history for thousands of years was to eat a high protein healthy breakfast. Alternative view is that stressed out people in the modern world should address the root cause of problems instead of treating symptoms. Some people, perhaps even most, do better by eating a high protein breakfast. Eggs are very beneficial for providing essential nutrients for superior brain function, healing a fatty liver, and improving sex hormones. Runny yolks increase the nutrition value. Fasting 2 non consecutive days (24 hours from 6 pm to 6 pm) a week becomes easier once a person breaks the unrecognized addiction to sugar and carbohydrates. It takes about 7 to 10 days of total abstinence to break the addiction to sugar and carbohydrates. It takes about 30 days to form a new eating habit. PPT avoid the wrong people, wrong places, and wrong things for at least 30 days. Avoid any possible triggers for at least 30 days. Avoid restaurants and fast food places for at least 30 days. Learn how to cook. Go to a grocery store and buy groceries. Eliminate all sugar and carbohydrates from your home and office and life for at least 30 days. Stressed out people do better by eating breakfast especially a high protein ketogenic breakfast. It was dogma for thousands of years that a healthy breakfast is healthy. New dogma is don't eat breakfast. It's important to address the root cause of problems. People struggle to eat healthy and have limited access to healthy food. Too many people are stuck eating fast food instead of cooking healthy food at home. Learn about hyper palatable foods and msg. Some processed foods and fast food places and restaurants use flavor excitotoxins and flavor enhancers and msg and sugar to sell more product and make more money. Learn to cook

Why does my dietitian say this is dangerous, she also says I don't eat enough carbs. I understand IF, and i tell her i don't eat because I am not hungry then she says that's why I'm not losing weight. Maybe you don't lose weight because your metabolism is slowed down? Maybe you need to exercise at least 30 minutes a day. From my experience, once you hit a normal weight, fasting BS will drop.

Plz comment- I have been doing IF based on Dr Dixit Diet India. I eat 2 times a day. But I dont care what I am eating. This was just to get rid of my habit of eating 10 times a day. Its 6 months now. I found weight loss by 4 kg..but its not target..as it goes up and down. I want to proceed next step. What is that? Can I manipulate my eating habits? Can I even eat 1 time a day? I found - that some day I did not eat anything and at dinner- I get FULL with small meal. I afraid something is wrong inside body...or as you said- body is used to it or activated pipeline to use energy from fats within body..still I have to reduce my tummy a lot... by the way I am not overweight...just wish to avoid Diebitis. I am 45, 172 cm height....and 75 Kg weight!!!!!

The reason I made this channel is so people can understand what health is and to make informed decisions on their own health. The only thing I can say is to learn more and eat healthy foods. Everyone is different, so you have to learn what your body needs. I’ve been watching your videos for the past 2 months and have developed a new understanding of how the body works. I am working towards going low carb and/or keto, then fasting then OMAD. It takes time and that’s ok. What I’d like to know though is how I can adapt this as a family lifestyle. It is a lifestyle philosophy after all and if I believe that it’s the sensible diet to follow then I want my children (10&13) to understand what I’m discovering for their future health. Unfortunately, nowhere do you see this information presented to kids. (you should consider it!) I’d most probably say because it’s relatively just recently caught on. Is there a guideline on how to incorporate this lifestyle into a family with children? What extent is considered safe for kids? Not the fasting necessarily but do you recommend any source of info to follow? Thank you.
