I basically see her statement about anger as her trying to distance feminism away from the stereotype that its about hating men and replacing men with women. She wants women to continue to work hard to create opportunities but doesn't want it to be fueled by anger and distrust because that makes it hard for men and women to work together.

@jedijones3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, she is preaching the right kind of feminism. But she isn't arguing against people stereotyping feminism. She is arguing against the movement of anger and entitlement within feminism itself.
@jedijones3 жыл бұрын
@El Raton Umm, ask Phil Hartman about that one. Men have been killed by their spouses. Yes, in areas like the Middle East, women don't have equal rights. Feminists should focus their attention on those countries. Instead we're ludicrously told that "misogyny" exists in America, a word that wasn't even in common use until 5 years ago. Women have an innate physical disadvantage against men, which is why we have laws against rape and other forms of abuse. We also have child support laws. Yet, in the modern economy, women have incredible advantages. They're better at verbal skills, and are simply doing better in education across the board. Ultimately, it's very easy for women to get in a situation where a man is paying all their bills, while they don't have to work at all. It's extremely rare for a man to be in that privileged position. That's the only reason women aren't earning as much money as men, because they have so many opportunities to be supported by men rather than work. Ultimately, it's wrong to focus on any ideology like feminism which only looks at trying to help one group of people. We should always take society as a whole, and work on issues that help all people.

I think the problem with sexism is that many women DO work hard and ARE deserving, and still because of sexism aren't given the same opportunities, or paid as much. Some women have to work even harder than their male counter parts. I think thats something to be justifiably angry about. I am glad she is such a hard working person and a good example, but I wish she wouldn't use her success as a way to make it seem as if other women havent worked as hard as her.
@kazeboiii6 жыл бұрын
Yes, agreed! And in no way do I think she _intends_ to come off that way, but she does. Her words here about tone stink of privilege. She was riding on the back of her family’s financial security and success when she started up her own business at 19. No one’s going to say she didn’t work hard or didn’t deserve that, but we also can’t sit back and say she would have gotten the same recognition if she had come from an unknown family without some hefty financial backing. She didn’t have to work as hard for it as other women do. Love Drew, but she’s really disappointed me here.
@arx7546 жыл бұрын
I agree with some of what you say, but not about the backing she got when she was 19. She was selected by Speilburg for ET when she was 7. And, I don't think he offered her the role because she was a Barrymore. So, she'd been working since she was 7 when she started her own company at 19. I have no doubt but that it was her OWN money that she used to start her company.
@kazeboiii6 жыл бұрын
arx754 I’m sure she used her own money as well, but that doesn’t change the fact that if she had any financial setbacks, she had her family to lean against. Whether or not that happened isn’t the point, it’s the fact that she had that financial privilege that not everyone has that makes the difference. Drew had a hard life in many unique ways, but money wasn’t among those hardships. And, unfortunately, it is money that often makes or breaks it where opportunity is concerned.
@kazeboiii6 жыл бұрын
arx754 Like I said, though, I have little doubt Drew only means the best, but her words here really miss the mark. She’s speaking as someone who hasn’t experienced the same amount of resistance as the other women speaking up in Hollywood have, you know? She fought back and moved a mile, while others fought back and only moved an inch. I’m, of course, not an expert on Drew’s entire life history, but knowing what I do know, I feel it’s her time to sit back and let other voices be heard.

All the comments below I don't think people are realizing that in 1995 when she was 19 I would think even with who she is and her family is she would have to work hard to be taken seriously. She was the coolest person of my teens but she wasn't serious. She was never serious. She flashed David Letterman...she was in rehab before 13 yrs old. She had a tough life. She had to work hard to stay relevant and she had her share of bad publicity. Even with her crazy childhood she grew to be such a successful, kind, intelligent gentle soul. She has amazing energy and heart...even her laugh is contagious. I met her once in 1999. Worked in Never Been Kissed with her for 3 months as a regular extra. She was the nicest most humble celebrity I had ever met. She is a class act. She may have been a wild child in her youth but she will always be one of my favorites.

@anniebanana36986 жыл бұрын
+Emily S Agreed, but I interpreted this as not "staying angry" - I don't think she sees a problem with having an initial angry response but it's hard to make positive changes through continued and sustained anger. Look at Rose McGowan - she's the friggin' poster child for anger getting her absolutely nowhere and actually harming her cause and diluting the important message that she has. Yes, she was hurt, terribly so and you can see it written all over her every move and reaction but she has sadly also hurt herself even more in the way that she has handled herself. People tend write her off and think she's a crazy, angry woman rather than really truly listening to what she has to say. Calm and articulate would have gotten her so much further in the cause. Just my personal opinion.

Darling, Drew. We do not have to prove anything. The power is never given, it is always taken. And, yes, righteous anger has its place and time - and it is now. The paradigm needs to shift way to the opposite side before the equilibrium is restored. So, please continue doing what you do, because we do need the balance of views, but at the same time do not hinder others as they get things moving. Even the famous suffragettes had differences in their views, but together they achieved the common goal.

Love Drew, but the advice she offered young women was tone deaf. Not only is she a Barrymore, she's also had connections to people in high places since she was a child. Her godfather is Steven Spielberg for goodness sakes. Granted, the projects she produced were excellent, however, she was given the opportunities she was because she already had clout in the industry--even as a young woman.

@prenticeregina6 жыл бұрын
It's not about jealousy or "hatin' [on] privilege". Drew Barrymore's life story is well-known as are her struggles. User haute03 wasn't criticizing her life. The point he's making is valid. Drew Barrymore's advice is dripping with the bias of someone who has not done what she claims is the key to success. It's "tone deaf" because her advice is the ol' American Dream rhetoric of: work hard enough ("pull yourself up from your bootstraps") and it won't matter what your ethnicity or sex is because your talent and perseverance will be recognized and rewarded. But we all know that's just not true. The only reason she was afforded a sit down with her Jansport backpack in front of those executives is because she had those connections to begin with. Los Angeles (and the country at large) is littered with those who have clawed their way thru a dysfunctional family and drug addictions to a place of strength, carrying with them incredible stories and talents that could effect change in their chosen industries, but who have not the means or connections to do so. It's not to say she didn't work hard for what she has- we know she has. It's not a zero-sum game. But frankly it's ridiculous that she, or anyone else, could ignore all of her obvious opportunities and say that she has gotten to where she is with hard work and willpower alone.

Drew made it because she's "DREW" no actress is remotely like her. She's completely unique and she's sweetheart. Love her to death. You know maybe her family got her foot in the door but she's been here for 40 years based on how much us fans love her. I've loved her since she did ET when I was a kid (50 now)

haute03 Lets be real, her circumstance also ruined her childhood. She grew up and worked her ass off.

I'll always remember that scene in one of the Charlies' Angels films when she licks the steering wheel. God that was strangely hot.
