As someone who grew up pretty sheltered from video games, I relate to the feeling of being at other peoples' houses and ONLY wanting to play video games. I remember one time being like 10 years old and being DELIGHTED when my parents brought me and my brothers to this random business and sat us in a room with a PS3 and let us play video games for like three hours. Turns out the business was actually a familial law firm and my parents were in another room actively writing and signing their divorce papers as we played, and that is why, to this day, I have serious beef with Lego Harry Potter.

Hey Drew, the issue with the hard drive free storage is 2 fold: 1. Installing a new game: usually entails installing many many patches and updates to install the most recent version thus inflating the overall size of the game out of hand. 2. Installing a patch/update: requires literally making a copy of the game, installing and merging the patch/update on this copy, then deleting the old copy - thus requiring double the amount of space for the game (at least temporarily). you can likely use the free space for videos and other media as advertised.

There isn't a need to create a copy of the entire game to patch certain elements, you can just patch them in place. However, uncompressing temporary files does take a bit of space especially with how large games have gotten

Mine was similar. I started out as a nintendo boy with getting the Wii for christmas 2010/2011. I would've been the same age as the year, 10 or 11. Then, after I bought the amazing spiderman movie tie in game around 2012, I also saw somebody playing it on the xbox/ps and that version was completely better, because of the hardware and all that. So from there I disown nintendo because I feel like they've cheated me by being the inferior console as far as tech goes. So I asked my parents for a playstation. Weirdly they got me an xbox 360 instead, but I was so new to gaming I didn't really care, figured it'd all be the same. I ended up enjoying it, but I never really got to play the best games it had to offer. Like halo. Then, ps4 and xbone drop, and I go for the ps4, because of those *chefs kiss* exclusives. I was never particularly loyal to xbox but I am now to playstation. Then 4 years later rumors of the new Nintendo console surface. And with them come rumors of a new zelda game. I thought I outgrew that part of my childhood, but then I see gameplay for botw for the first time, and all these speculation and rumor vidoes start popping up and now I'm almost a grown man actually hyped for a nintendo console. I get the switch on launch day, and still stand by nintendo as my favorite company of the 3. Next being sony, ofc for the high quality exclusives. It's a good bridge between the great exclusives that nintendo dominates with, and the higher quality tech xbox is probably best at. So, for best console, I think playstation 4 runs the game. TLOU 1&2, Uncharted 1-4, God of war, Spiderman, and all designed with the best modern tech has to offer. Then with that you get access to TW3, all Arkham games, RDR2, GTA5, and any other 3rd party game, it might not be the best console to run those on, but it's more than good enough for me. They look and run amazing on ps4, so I'm fine without a slightly better version out there that I couldn't get all of sony's exclusives on as well. At the end of the day, that's just me lol so I don't see why I'd bother fighting with someone who doesn't feel the same way. In fact, most of my friends swear by the xbox, and a lot of them probably haven't even played the playstation, but I couldn't care less. Most of the games I enjoy are singleplayer, and at the end of the day it's just games we're talking about. Nothing could be more subjective than games, movies, or music.

Hey Drew, to answer your question about HDD space the reason it requires all that free space is because when you update a game you do not download the entire new game file, instead you download the new data and a set of instructions for where those pieces go. Then your system will go through all the old game files and copy them one by one to a new location while inserting the new information where it's supposed to go(this is the copying step that takes forever). So you essentially need twice as much free space for an update as the game itself takes up. This makes downloading updates very fast and use very little data but has all those drawbacks such as the long copying step and the need for extra space. I think this will be solved by the next generation using an SSD so now the files in updates no longer have to be located physically close locations to one another since there are no moving parts so the copying step won't be as important. I hope that makes sense

You're right but it's really dumb that they didn't account for it when showing you the needed size or available space. If I need to download a 100GB game and I have 150GB space, the system should say "Hey, the download is 100GB but I'm gonna need 200GB of space because of my update protocol." And not cry "Not enough space!" to me when I, maybe a non tech savvy person, is seeing enough space for the download.

I’m about to infodump so hard on my experiences with Sly Cooper but Drew just hit me with SO MUCH unwanted nostalgia. First of all, I used to call the game “Sly fox” because I thought the main character was a fox. Now, I understand that it was, indeed, a raccoon, but I was tiny at the time so I was allowed to think it was a fox. I will be referring to it as sly fox, because that is what childhood me thought and that is what I will continue to think. I used to *always* play sly fox. It was my game, like Dream and Minecraft. I was constantly on sly fox, I would get so mad when my brothers wanted a go, but they only ever wanted a go about twice a year. They would just watch their little sister play with her fox friend. They would sit and watch me, help me, tell me what to do and when I found it hard, they’d offer to show me what to do and then die right as they were about to win so I could have the glory. As I spent so much time on this game, I grew emotionally attached to sly fox. I played and played, I would restart chapters just because I thought they were fun. I especially loved the Paris Chapter. I got to the last (fourth?) chapter in the game, and was so exited. I knew I could have finished this game a while back, but I never actually got onto this bit. Jump forwards a bit, and I’m about the walk out, I’m about to win. But this big, looming creature comes and grabs my fox. I’m spamming all of the moves I know, hoping to jump out of the fist, not knowing it was a cutscene. Then, the screen goes black. I’m gutted, going back over, trying another strategy, getting my brothers to try, getting my mother to try. But nothing works. It’s how the game ends. Sly fox was killed. After that, I never touched the game again. I was thoroughly pissed. Such a big part of my childhood, MY sly fox, MY game, and it ended with the death of my protagonist. I lived for that game. Anyway As you can see, no I have not recovered.

Yea the ps3 didnt do to well, xbox 360 was a great console at the time, ps2 is literally the top selling console of all time, and pre xbox or playstation nintendo basically had a monopoly on the console market so most people around that time had some sort of nintendo console. Nintendo had and still does have strong console loyalty thats why yhe switch has done so well. Along with nintendo giving you a face to sympathise with, a fun bubbly mascot, and a mastery of building hype. Meanwhile xbox and playstation usually win by having something extremely useful to the average consumer, like the ps2 basically being a cheap computer, the xbox 360 being sold at a good price compared to the ps3, and the ps4 for not being the xbox one, also spiderman and other exclusives. Tldr, most people had the same gaming experience due to high sales and peer pressure.

the switch, and Nintendo as a whole, is fairly distinct. They aim at a different market and they also manage to fairly successfully become the de facto second console of people who are primarily interested in either as Sony or Microsoft console

13:47 As an Xbox user, and with a dad that used to work at Microsoft, I am aware of this weird habit and also have an explanation. While my dad worked at a completely different area in the company, he was constantly having the issue where a boss would be promoted or replaced, and the next guy would feel the need to put his name on whatever they were working on. The new bosses would almost always change something for no reason, and then the whole team would have to spend weeks or months fixing random bugs and user complaints because the interface changed for no other reason than that the new boss wanted to do something. So thats probably why that keeps happening.
