while i agree with the ideas presented here, and i think you did a phenomenal job explaining things to the best of your ability. i personally think that there's a lack of perspective here. the idea that status dictates fashion and culture is a bit more complex than that. culture isn't bound to class exclusively. the stealing of black culture, the stealing of asian culture, ESPECIALLY japanese culture (japanese school girl outfits and it's offshoots, japanese "work wear" and the fetishization of the label "made in japan", etc,..." is so common in fashion. i don't think status dictates culture. i think it's very much the opposite. i think the reason we think status is the means by which fashion and culture is "dictated" is because those at the top CAN project themselves. it's because we in the lower class, we at the bottom, don't have a means of which we can communicate our culture at the scale that the rich or the staturely can. love the content drew! so happy to see you creating more philosophical content.

Frankfurt school's critical theory can be seen as a description of what status dictates culture mean within capitalism. Precisely by the fact that fashion steals from working classes and appropriates culture. People who have capital (which coincides with status now) can mass produce and through production affect what lower classes buy. I think Kuipers (2012) also touches the problem of the theory of vertical top down culture distribution, and says that currently influencers might have more significant impact than higher classes. In general, in the west at least, cultures from lower classes became insensitive towards what higher classes do because of individualism. Top-dpwn effect is no longer that strong However, fashion is institutionalized and has top actors who do dictate the rules. Mass produced fashion follows whatever is done by the big brands and independent acclaimed designers. So video's thesis might be the case. There is too many components to firmly agree or disagree without proper writing

Worrying about status ruined my experience with clothes for a few years. I was trying to impress others, instead of dressing for the person I really am. I wasn't focused on quality or esthetics, and definitely didn't appreciate the creative minds and skilled hands that make clothes. Worse than all that, I wasn't grateful for everything my clothes were doing for me, like making it possible to have a job and keeping me warm all winter. Learning more about style made me feel humble in a healthy way, and made it possible to build a wardrobe that I enjoy every day. Respect to those who know how to get something positive out of chasing status through their style, but if that is not you let it go.

I won't lie, in the last month/6 weeks I haven't watched your videos/podcast with the same frequency as before, but I can definitely tell even from the first minutes of the video you still rising yourself and your content day-by-day, even with more and more historical contextualisation, which I really enjoy. Next couple/3 weeks will be super-busy for me, I'll definitely put a Drew J marathon in the first squares of my do-to-list (I only started the Keezy episode of the podcast, I NEED to watch it fr). Your videos are truly insightful man, stay safe. ❤ The origin of ostracization is really interesting man, it comes from the tradition in the most famous republic of the Ancinet Greece, Athens, to ban the problematic figures in the city. The vote consisted in writing the opinion on an ostrakòn, in Greek a clay piece used to ask the expulsion (Here in Italy the etimology from latin/Greek words are really loved by our teachers)

This is a great conversation because I think with the advent of social media, you'll see that this moment in time is the most you'll see fashion flipped on it's head. Every day people are setting the trends and the designer brands are conforming more and more to it. Luxury brands are now sublimed with streetwear and that was never the case.

You’re absolutely right… and I think young people (obviously not all) have more $ to to swing around and cement their style as present in society … older people can’t really dictate what younger people wear compared to previous times and places. Then that whole Miranda p (devils wears Prada) monologue has shifted to what youre saying… it trickles up

I think fashion can be a really powerful way of performing status, especially within hierarchies of gender performance. I definitely personally vary how I dress based on how enthusiastic I am about the performance of femininity on any given day, and when I dress myself up I am very aware of doing so to influence peoples perception of me towards women who are valued in media - the star of a music video, the ''it girl" in a chic flic or the love interest in a male gaze film. I also think that there are nested hierarchies of status that can be expressed through fashion, and that while within the fashion world, streetwear for instance is having its moment, there is a broader level of cultural exeptance of and respect for/deference to the professional in a suit.

Excellent video! In my studies, there was always a focus on high societies when it comes to fashion history, probably because they had the luxury of being recorded. Rarely are working classes mentioned within text, even though they made up most of the population. I wonder if this also has to do with preservation of clothing too, since the rich were the ones that typically had their clothing stored away in a semi-safe environment. #pvv I would love to go back to Estonia for a week. I was in Tallinn for a day, but I want to go back to explore the marshes and forests.

#pvv Hearing you say you want to visit my home country made me jump haha, I didn’t expect that at all. I think Lithuania is worth a visit, considering it’s not so much populated/crowded, and Vilnius being a gorgeous lil capital that we have, with a cozy old-town that’s UNESCO protected. Most of the areas are “english-friendly”, so miscommunication with the locals shouldn’t be a common problem 😅 We also have interesting local food, like šaltibarščiai (cold beetroot soup). As for city recommendations, It’d probably come down to Vilnius and Kaunas, they both have a heap of nice parks and art galleries/museums. So yeeeeee, if you’re ever going to visit us, I hope your trip goes well!

in regards to status, i think it’s something that is in the forefront of my mind when im buying, to assess if i want an item solely based on its societal + hierarchal value, or if it actually aligns with my aesthetic and personal sensibilities. it helps me discern items meant for asserting superiority vs items that can help me express myself, which has helped me stave off of many purchases. also #pvv i wanna go to japan, i know it’s cliché but i love trains and i want to ride many train networks there… and also not pay for shipping when im buying japanese clothes hehe

Congratulations Drew ! This is amazing ! While in a way I think status plays a major role in fashion especially what’s considered as “High fashion”, I also think that’s just one side of the conversation leaving out the general discussion. Fashion is self expression and there are individuals and communities who express themselves purely without the thought of supremacy rather as a representation to something bigger. Streetwear is a pure example of that. Supreme being birth by the skate culture in New York which till today, asides from people who buy supreme for status reasons, there are people who genuinely love and support the brand for its original root (skate culture). Bape also and the hiphop culture around it. Or even Jerseys to collectively express your love for your favourite soccer team. While I believe there is definitely hierarchy in fashion, till this day (lol), there are people who purely love fashion as a form of expressing their love, involvement or support to a movement. Unless this video only speaks on “High fashion” as the “real fashion” which is a whole different conversation lol, there is a whole lot of information left out. Again your video is amazing as always ✨

First of all, amazing topic and amazing video. One of the best discussions I’ve seen on KZbin. Zygmunt Bauman says society has expanded previous exclusion concepts regarding religion, color or social hierarchy and adapted these to (also)exclude those who don’t consume. So if you consume, you’re accepted. If you don’t,you’re out of the game. You are what you buy. As a black brazilian guy, I can asure you these exclusion happens on so many levels and it’s one out of many tools articulated by those in power to oppress. I notice black people striving so hard to keep up with these high levels of consumerism seeking acceptance and validation as compensation for social exclusion. That’s sad.

Traditional menswear is not "timeless" but...typically has a 10-year lifecycle. Contemporary/trendy menswear...1-3 year lifecycle. I believe that none of these are really "timeless" (as mentioned in the video). However, I do believe that more traditional/classics linger as they have stood the test of time (i.e. a typical 2023 suit worn in 2023 is vastly different regarding: patterns, fit, fabric, weight, accessories, and formailities from the 1960s, although they're still called suits). This may apply to other clothing styles and types etc.

#pvv A country that I’ve always wanted to visit is France, but more specifically the city of Cherbourg. Due to just some family disconnect, I never got to find out about my background and history of my ancestors. That was until I went to a few family events thrown by the side of the family I never saw or really knew. It opened my eyes almost immediately hearing and seeing generations of people whom came before me, and especially talking to my great-grandmother (that I’d never met before), she talked about her and her parents (my great-great grandparents) having fled from Cherbourg in 1940, and the life they lived prior, how her mom was actually a twin (I’m a twin too, and the only one in the family since). It was quite sad but I was so grateful to be given this knowledge, I couldn’t believe the fact I’d never got to hear any of this. I got to see these over 80 year old recipe papers she kept for french pastries and snacks, and who knows how old these recipes go back. With that new knowledge, I’d love to go back, experience and set foot in a place that my family for generations called home (also umbrellas of Cherbourg, incredible film)

I wanna preface this comment by saying I absolutely love these in depth intelllectual video essays, I really don’t see other creators putting this much thought and effort into these types of videos. Now onto my thoughts, I feel like status/ affluence doesn’t necessarily dictate culture, rather people that are affluent draw from culture to dictate what’s popular. I think those people have the ability to project themselves far and wide which is why certain things are deemed as in or out of fashion, and why some things are seen as status symbols and others aren’t. So in summary I feel like things that represent status are determined by the ruling class, but that they don’t dictate culture necessarily, rather drawing from culture at their own liking. I feel like this is where appropriation comes in, where pieces of culture from these micro societies and oppressed groups of people, that were originally deemed as out of the norm or lesser than, suddenly become fetishized and desirable. On another note, the way I personally see status symbols in fashion is less so about a class distinction and more so a pre determination of a persons character, or in other words a signifier that someone is interested in a particular niche. For example, I love Tabi boots and when I see other people with them, it’s an indicator of course that that person is apart of the community of people that enjoys that style of shoe. Or course the argument could be made that ownership of designer items is a societal status symbol in the first place but that’s not really what I’m getting at. I don’t think this comment was really cohesive, esp the second part but just my thoughts lol. I really love these types of videos and I can’t wait to watch the next one.

I think there’s a distinction in status within the « luxury » world of fashion. I know a guy that has lots of Gucci & Balenciaga tees, some LV stuff, Dior b23’s and the list goes on. I on the other hand for example, I am into fashion a lot, but mostly brands like ROA, C.P Company, Satisfy, O.G Bape, District Vision, O.G Number (N)ine etc. something between Gorpcore/sportswear & japanese fashion. Those brands I wear are sometimes pretty expensive too and can be considered luxury, but the difference is that their Ethos is not around the traditional luxury we know, but those brand have values that we also have as consumers attached to their products that make them perceived in such way. When I see someone with those big luxury brands and skinny ripped jeans, you know what i’m talking about haha, my first thought is that they’re trying to flex and showoff their wealth, while on the other hand, if I see someone with smaller niche designer brands like story mfg, ROA, Undercover etc, there are two options. 1- the average person might not even know he’s wearing « designer » so his style might look cool but there’s not much more to it, or 2- someone might recognize the brands, but those who recognize them know that it is not to flex on people, but because they honestly like those brands and are into fashion since they’re lesser known brands from a macro society point of view.

Humans are social being. Therefore, we always transmitting and interpreting communication signals to each other visually or verbally. Through the process of interpreting these signals, we are able to make quick life decisions whether the other person is attractive, hostile, trustworthy, intimidating, weak, etc. Status in society will be defined after the majority shared a similar interpretation and appreciation of these communication signals, giving birth to culture. The more desirable qualities a person has shown through these signals, the more elevated his/her status in society. The cycle is complete when people aspiring to achieve a particular status, will try every way to emulate the signals sent by by those in status. In response, people in status will try every way to preserve their exclusivity by outdoing others either through material acquisition, laws, or customs.

Honestly, not sure I agree here. I don’t think high status creates new trends, rather, historically trends have been appropriated from lower status groups and adopted by high status groups. dDue to their visibility in that position, have promoted this ‘new’ style as their own. I think it’s a slippery slope to attribute culture and fashion to groups that have built their status on taking advantage of groups of a lower status.

I used to believe people wear for themselves, they don't care about other people's opinions on fashion . but actually, YOU DO CARE. or else why these fashion in status exist? it's not like you wanna feel the most stylish person in the world or the coolest in town. it's more to how well dressed and how much sense of style you have. notice that's the keyword prince charles use. I think we all can agree to that. whenever I look at people on street, those 2 are always in my mind pvv: I always wanted to go to Norway. I caved and bought the chocolate brown carhartt canvas zip up jacket at a local vintage pop up yesterday, but my question is, does that now dictate my level of “fashion intelligence”? I love it. The contemplation lies in that I don’t know if buying this “mainstream” item is a hinderance or exception in the originality of my personal style journey? It’s something that I’ve looked at from afar and loved the thought of having one, but not the associated characteristics 🤷🏼‍♂️

in my honest opinion Alec what dictates your level of fashion intelligence is your level of fashion intelligence. NOT what you decide to wear. 08:34 (Adding to the convo about Macro and subcultures, with focus on Brazil) - Here at Brazil we have a lot of fast fashion and due to the country's economy and inequality of richness, we found ourselves buying over and over from the same brands, who do not even have a correct sense of "winter"/"summer" collection. Personally, I view these stores (in which I myself buy) as just a random purchase per day. The thing that has me thinking enough to comment was when you spoke less known brands VS Really known brands and used ZARA as an example. Funny enough, at Brazil, Zara was considered luxury brand, the type that you only see in a few malls around the cities, mostly sticking with others such as FARM (Usually known as a brand that white woman enjoy) Also AQUAMAR and others. AND HERE LIES THE AMAZING THING! Recently, the fast fashion stores (Renner, C&A, etc) are TRYING to make themselves look luxury by getting their prices HIGHER, into a point where a shirt at Zara is being less expensive than a shirt at Renner. Both qualities suck, and I mean it, as I have clothes from both. It's just so interesting to see how fast fashion has circled a whole way into a point where to be considered luxurious is a matter of price rather than quality (This, when we are looking at middle class VS poor people buying clothes.. The actual rich ones tend to buy outside the country, I'm talking like taking empty baggages only to come back full. It's just...a lot to think. Thought you might like this inside. Great video (as usual!) have a nice day!

you know what i thought watching this as a brazilian person? how some menswear subcultures in the brazilian favelas often make use of items that convey status. Like how men who dress in a "chavoso" style often wear items that come from a preppy tradition, from brands that are very associated with the middle class trying to replicate their idea of the brazilian elite, like Ralph Lauren or Lacoste, but all of this is done through a streetwear lens by wearing a polo shirt going up three sizes to create an oversized look, or picking up shirt or accessories with visible logos. Also how soccer jersey is often seen as a status item, theses shirts can easyly cost over R$250,00 and some men collect them, for many it's the most expensive piece they own

Or like, remember when in the early 2010s teeth braces were seen as attractive (literally being wore as fashion accessory, even when people didn't need it) by brazilians teens living in poor areas of the country, because it was something assocciated with the middle class. Crazy times

Wait, there is more... tanned skin, in many places in europe or the US is seen as a status symbol, here in Brazil is no different, but in a particular way. Brazil is the only place that I know of that values tan lines, with some women going as far as wearing tape bikinis to get the perfect placement and sharpness. If u ask them why they like it they most likely will say that they think it's sexy. But notice how it is also conected to status, tan lines are the true mark of a real brazilian tan, the one you got by siting in the sun doing nothing like yr freaking royalty and not the tan you get by walking in the sun to go to work in a tropical country everyday. I can think of this for days, but i'm going to stop. It's saddens because all of this diversity comes from us being deeply socially unequal. But Brazil is the perfect place to thing of symbols of status...

I wonder what outfits/items are considered "put together. No matter what for women other than a pair of heels. For example, men just have to wear a suit and they look smart. It's doesn't have to be designer, just solid colors like black or navy, just a button up collar shirt, blazer, pants, and loafers, a man is set. Women's fashion is so creative with varieties because part of women's fashion is always wearing something new. But for say "the outfit" a pair of heels and some sparkling jewelry is a necessity. I'm thinking a dress or skirt, but then "what kind" of dress would always looks good, fashionable, smart? Maybe the little black dress? Idk. 🤷🏽‍♀️

i read this comment recently that said “too many people can afford Chanel now “ 😅 some rich girl was obviously mad that it wasn’t exclusive enough and it made me think abiotic how I read an interesting piece about how trends and the changing styles , things being “out of style” was all some old money Shit trying to create false and contrived reasoning to differentiate themselves from people with more recent money. It was talking about the gilded age but I’m sure rich people have been doing this to the new people they didn’t want to be rich elsewhere and before. Growing up wear I did it was interesting to see how preppy brands like polo were reinvented by simply styling them differently, and the all of the sudden polo wasn’t good enough for rich white ppl…. It didn’t represent the same thing to them…

K-Pop is a micro society? A niche ostracized by the main stream? Idk if you only apply that to you or the US or what, but K-pop is most definitely mainstream culture, not sub culture. Also sorry if I come across as way too negative, I really like your thoughts and videos😂

On a not serious note it's that we live in the Matrix and everything is a construct. On a serious note I believe that status, with some points that I did disagreed on that you brought up, does have presents within the fashion industry. I think that now like you mentioned with things over time it'll shift and as like anything nowadays the internet and giving random people a ton of power and status allows the influence of peoples ideals to really become something of reality. That goes for fashion as well because there are so many things about fashions social presents from ancient times to now where it's all traced back to is human nature and our collective need to belong in some way. Whether fashion, politics or anything really a sense of community always will have positions of status within it. #pvv I wanna travel to the north coast of Africa so bad.
