Why are Disney so determined to make people like Reva, the antagonist of Kenobi? Simple - because she's the actual main character of the show.

"Star Wars fans don't like Reva because they are racist!" A good version of this character arc already exists within the Star Wars canon., so Lando Calrissian begs to differ. He handed Han over to Darth Vader while displaying enough charisma, ambivalence and regret that the fandom forgave and embraced him instantly. The problem with Reva isn't her race or gender, it's the writing.

Never mind a much cleaner excuse. "I had to turn you in or the bad guys would hurt the people it's my job to protect" is as valid a reason to betray someone as it gets. It's obvious they will try a redemption arch with Reeva, because they: 1) need you to like her 2) a woman has to be the hero these days, we can never have white male heroes anymore 3) the black person can't be a villain... It's just predictable and annoying. I'm also getting a bit tired of all the greyzones; villains with redemption archs. Every character gets washed out and the same, both evil and good. Like we are supposed to overlook all the horrible things they've done. I miss some lighter stories, where the heroes and villains are clear, and good wins in the end.

When Vader says to Obi Wan in Star Wars "the circle is now complete" he's referring to Mustafar "when last we met I was but the learner". That was his last lesson from his old Master. There is no other battle between the two in the interim. People are making the wrong assumption that this is a blank that this show is needed to fill in.
@MrMeepzor2 жыл бұрын
When Vader says "Obi Wan once thought as you did" he's not suggesting that there's some meeting between the two in the interim between films in which Obi Wan tries to turn Anakin back to the light side. He's again referring to Mustafar when Ben pleaded with Anakin to stand down, not some off-screen adventure that this show needs to invent. These lines as we know them are already self-explanatory.

Leia Organa's true identity is known to no one in the Empire until Vader sensed it in Luke's emotions in Return of the Jedi. Vader even captured her in Star Wars and had no idea she was his daughter, and neither did she! He was looking for the stolen plans to the Death Star. Leia has no excuse whatsoever for being the focus of the Obi-Wan Kenobi show. Furthermore it violates canon to suggest that any Imperials would know if and where Obi-Wan was laying low, and he would never risk even being seen in public with Lars Owen, as his primary mission was to HIDE the boy, not to watch over or protect him. Presumably he would only need protection if he failed to stay hidden, which didn't happen until the Empire's search for the missing droids collided with Luke's boring home life, sparking a great adventure that would eventually bring him to Vader's attention.

What the hell has Disney done to the empire? They have gone from a extremely efficient, cold and calculating, and nearly emotionless and faceless dominating presents. To a barely function gaggle of screaming man children, inept troops, and outright disloyal high ranking officials. It’s like no one in the entire empire believes in it or the stability it brought after the clone wars. Depicting the empire as incomplete is also extremely unfitting as the empire’s failures in the OT nearly totally come from unpredictable wild cards. Episode IV: the child of the most powerful Jedi of the republic that no one had any reason to believe even existed lands a perfect shot using the force after being trained only slightly from a near totally dead order the empire stomped out. After the rebel attack on the Death Star was nearly completely destroyed down to less then half a dozen ships by the end. Episode V: the empire has the rebels cornered in a ship with a nonfunctional hyperdrive, but R2 who came with Luke just barely gets the Falcon back up and running barely escaping. Episode VI the empire’s trap is ruined as the native populations Endor garrisons the rebels on the planet in a surprise attack, a suicide attack gets lucky and takes out the flag ship, all while Vader who Palps has every reason to assume was completely broken into total loyalty and to him makes a last second decision to save his son. Episode 6 is the weakest in terms of it as the empire should have no real trouble with the Ewoks, but the empire fails more often then not in the OT because crazy wild cards happen to them. Not because everyone is incompetent or a petulant child.

A simple problem that may just solve itself in a few short years. Mainstream movie goers will get tired of watching terrible actresses performing unbelievable roles poorly, and some director will come out with some new, well written, well directed, well acted male-led cast, get rave reviews as a breath of fresh air in a stale market, and the money will do the rest. All these folks developing this kind of media will look at the money their competition starts raking in, and be forced to follow suit to stay financially relevant. 'Social justice' is convenient to big business and celebrities only as long as it doesn't hurt their profit margins. When it buys them privilege and power, they embrace it. When it threatens their big money, they hush it up and push it aside. Exactly the story with Netflix.

Yeah she is like a living meme! Why? Just look at her character. Star Wars is chock full of aliens and people covered with tattoos and or makeup. Especially the members of the dark side. But her face is devoid of anything that would hide the fact that she is a strong black woman. It’s so obvious. Nothing to obscure her face whatsoever. Her hair is even done up in a way that nothing is there to obscure her face. She seems so forced into a role just to tick boxes. I mean look at the original movies. I had zero issues with billy dee Williams. I would have zero issues with a black girl, or any woman of any color, in any role if she was a well written character who respected the lore. It’s almost like they make these stories and characters for ignorant people who are only somewhat interested in Star Wars who could care less about the lore and just want a popcorn flick or show to watch. Like one of your elderly aunt who got out to see Star Wars for movie matinee day! “Hey sweetie let’s go see that new Star Wars movie! It looks fun!” Those are the types who (god bless them), just blindly toss their money at Disney, while blissfully ignorant.

What annoys me the most, is that the fight between Obi Wan and Vader on the Death Star, is supposed to be the first time they have fought since Obi Wan bested and crippled him, with Vader even mentioning that he was "but the learner" the last time they fought. However, this episode screws with this, as in this episode Vader clearly isn't Obi Wan's apprentice anymore and handily bests him. Hence it may or may not retcon a New Hope slightly. Also, the emotional impact from that film's fight is lost if the two of them have fought before. If they have fought before and Obi Wan was only saved by some Deus Ex Machina BS, then the fight on the Death Star is not only less impactful, but Vader should be a lot more aggressive in it. As it is, he is deliberately cautious in that fight because of his memory of being crippled by his master last time. Side note: The show also cannot give Leia a consistent character. In episode 2 of the show, the entire point of the rooftop chase is that Leia distrusts Obi Wan as he is a stranger to her. However, in the next episode, she instantly trusts the truck driver, despite never having seen him before. The sudden unexplained character shift is quite jarring.

Are they deliberately making Obi Wan weak and stupid because he is a male? Just like they did to Luke Skywalker?
@J2digital2 жыл бұрын
Dude that whole episode doesn't make sense. I tried to retcon it for them by saying since Leia is the daughter of a senator that she has probably had some type of training on kidnapping so to only trust a few people from their security/government/whatever. Where that's lost is she sees the bounty on Obi Wan and goes "Oh they're really after you? You must be a bad guy too! You are somehow in on it as a double bad guy that's going to turn me back into them even though you just rescued me from them and they are only trying to kill you???" She could have at least said "I got kidnapped because of you, it's dangerous for me to be around you so I'm going to run away". But I guess that's just too simple and makes like a little bit of sense so fk me. If she would have even just said "stranger danger!" and ran away that would have made more sense. Then she just starts yammering off the second things cool down like nothing even happened. There is no levity to her nearly killing herself and being saved by the force. Ole Ben doesn't reprimand her and she isn't taken back by the force at all. Yet again just learning this mystical power actually exists that was just fantasy two seconds ago but who cares I'd rather be quirky and sarcastic.

Riva was written to be WAY too blunt and heavy handed with everything. As soon as she killed the head Inquisitor and returned to her colleagues to tell them that Obi-Wan killed him (I have to assume she did that because they didn't even show that very important conversation) it should have only been a matter of time before they killed her, because DUH, if they didn't they would obviously be next. I´m feeling an actual backlash because of this "forced representation" roles. After watching black Achilles, black female jarls, black WW2 soldiers in positions they didn´t actually filled, black british royalty, black elves, etc. I´m in a position that even a poster showing a black character keeps me from watching a movie. Something similar with powerful women who can´t smile, every time I see a poster of a "stunning and brave" character I just don´t want to watch the movie. It´s really sad, because I´m not racist or sexist, I really enjoyed lots of female and black character in old films, but just a hint of a movie preaching "the message" keeps me from watching.

Even if this character was well acted, the dialogue in the scene where she’s taunting Kenobi in that hangar is just dreadful. It’s on par with the worst Lucas had on offer in the prequels. What’s worse is it was delivered even worse than the worst of the lines Hayden was dealt. She’s taking up so much screentime away from a proper character arc for the REASON people have had some hope left with the franchise, not Kenobi, not Vader, Ewan himself. This man has been a godsend to the franchise and his acting ability has carried us through these first three episodes, but I’m dreading that we won’t see him overcome his regret and ptsd (which is crrtainly seems they’re going all in on). If they don’t manage to show Obi-Wan Kenobi heading up his character path to the wise calm old master that Luke meets in A New Hope, then what was the point of doing this at all.

Xena Warrior Princess is an example of a character that did horrific things in her past but found redemption. A primary antagonist is Callisto, whose parents Xena burned to death. Callisto has every right to seek vengeance against Xena. Eventually Xena actually braves hell itself to rescue Callisto's soul so she can get to heaven to be with her family. The fact Xena was a bloodthirsty psychopath in the past is brought up again and again, and the whole show is about her seeking some kind of redemption for her deeds. How do you criticise someone’s race or gender? That’s literally racist and sexist. You can criticise the writers and directors for pandering and choosing her based on race and gender rather that acting skills. You can criticise tokenism and forced diversity in modern Hollywood and you can criticise them for creating such a dislikable character and giving her so much importance in a show that’s not about her but you can’t literally criticise her skin colour and gender, that’s messed up🤨 the issue isn’t the fact that she’s black or that she’s a woman. The issue is that she’s a horribly written character with no likeable characteristics and she’s a Mary Sue, it also doesn’t help that she’s a mediocre actress. I hate tokenism and forced diversity. Don’t get me wrong diversity is a good thing but Hollywood does it in the most pandering and political charged way possible and it makes something that’s supposed to be good... well kinda sh*t. With that said from the first three episodes I’ve seen nothing in her character that gives off these pandering vibes. Nothing about her character has anything to do with feminist agenda, wokeness, BLM or anything along those lines so I honestly don’t get why you’re bringing race or gender into it. She’s a terrible character who happens to be a black female. Her blackness and femininity plays no role in being so dislikable. If she was to keep making comments about how it’s unfair being a female inquisitor compared to the guys or starting rambling on about how being a black inquisitor is hard then I’d understand but like I said neither her race or gender has any significance in her character

The soul of Star Wars is not in it. They have all the ingredients they need, but the outcome is always lifeless. And apart from that, the writing is so bad it hurts. That was their original plan but Disney don't want to upset the kiddies. I would've preferred that, or to see him actually continue his training than this shitty middle ground to focus on other characters who really have nothing to do with him.
