Exactly. My friends and I were talking about this and were like who would drop $6000 on this for a 2 night trip? If it encompassed all of Star Wars, particularly the OT and maybe the Clone Wars, I could see a lot of big Star Wars fans going. But instead it’s made exclusively for Disney Star Wars fans which none exist. And those that do, won’t drop even $1000 on this. Disney has completely ruined Star Wars that nobody wants anything to do with it anymore.

Just to be clear, the "$1 billion" figure people are throwing about was actually the cost of building the entire Star Wars land (actually closer to $1.5 billion). The hotel itself cost $350 million to build. Problem is there are also running costs: Disney was assuming it would consistently get 100% occupancy at full price, yielding them a 30% margin on bookings (after staff and other running costs). The hotel actually made a profit in its first year, but this year when they saw they could no longer fill it even after slashing prices, they realised it was going to start losing money every year if they kept it open. All told, net of tax write-offs etc, will Disney have lost about $250 million on this experiment.
@ACABFuck12_89 Жыл бұрын
Source on the 350 million figure for the hotel. Seems low. I've seen both 1 billion dollars and half a billion dollars. Probably likely somewhere in the middle. My wife and I, and my two kids (living in Seattle, WA... yeah, I know, ugh) used to go to Great Wolf Lodge every winter for my daughter's bday (and because it was dark and cold here). Big wilderness, animal themed lodge with a huge water park (all indoors, except for a few outdoor hot tubs which was awesome). They had variously themed restaurants. They had this "magic" themed interactive game with wands and level-ups and secrets, etc. All four of us (and a couple of times we brought 2-3 of my daughter's friends as well) would spend 3-4 days and nights there for 2-3 grand. Had a FANTASTIC time running around with the kids, shooting their magic wands at everything trying to make them move and say something, gathering clues to unlock further magic clues. They had employees telling stories to the kids several times each day. They had animatronic animals talking to the kids all over the place. The "magic" game was actually engaging with at least a vague plot. We went there probably 5 years in a row and had a great time each time. Disney could SO EASILY have made something even better than that. Give Great Wolf Lodge a shot. We absolutely LOVED it, again 4 or 5 years in a row with our kids. Great stuff. Sheesh, just build an interactive resort for the kids (and parents) to explore and interact with. Then set the kids loose. Printing money like no tomorrow.

It really is a shame- the idea of an immersive theater hotel is a really fun idea. I even accept that it would probably cost a lot for upkeep and to pay actors. Leave it to Disney to louse it up in spectacular fashion.

Team Disney is ignoring its own history. When Disneyland opened, "where is Mickey Mouse?" People on the Snow White adventure didn't get the memo--"you are Snow White." Peter Pan's Flight has undergone a lot of changes since July 17, 1955. It took months for Walt to figure out that he needed Disney characters in his Disneyland. Walt didn't like the repeated cries for more Three Little Pig sequels--"pigs can't top pigs." The current Team Disney is enraged at fandom for expecting to see Star Wars characters instead of the self-insert Team Disney characters that could be dropped into any story. Even referencing Luke or Darth Vader makes their blood boil and they turn green with envy. They don't accept that "the customer is always right."

If they made things where people could go and live for a day in a Lucas-era Star Wars setting, they could charge whatever they wanted and they'd still be fighting people off with sticks. But no, they have to Disney-era-ify it all and I think they're discovering just how small the paying audience really is for that.

I must say, Disney has done a very good job at making me disinterested in franchises I used to be very passionate about, Star Wars and Marvel are 2 of the biggest names in that, but I haven't watched a film or series from either franchise in well over a year... And we thought the Mouse was buying everything up just to own it all, but it's just to make everything so terrible that we have no choice but to watch, because there's no other option for entertainment.

My advice to anybody getting ready for their first visit to the tragic Kingdom with kids in tow is to make sure you have a weeks vacation after your “vacation“. When you wait a half hour just to go from the parking lot to the tram, which takes you to the next line just to get onto the monorail, which then takes you to the next line just to get into the park and then an hour and 15 minute line for a 45 second Aladdin Ride followed by a $10 bottle of water and a $15 chicken breast sandwich you realize that maybe the pool at the hotel would’ve been more fun.

I suppose a cosplay hotel might work well enough IF the cosplay was voluntary and maybe restricted to some specific areas of the place. So if you want to play you know when something will be going on and where you need to go to take part. And you could easily avoid that if you are not all that interested. And definitely not at those prices. The people who would be most interested are mostly people who can't afford those. And yes, it should be based on what is most popular. So, the era of the first trilogy.

The “job” feeling of constant planning and ride tracking hit us hard while we visited Disney World. I recently saw either an article or a tweet thread about how the parks are more interested in catering to the 'weird Disney adults' rather than families with young children. The parks would much rather cater an experience (and cost) to the childless adults who are Disney-obsessed and have loads of time, attention, and disposable income, rather than families with young children. I remember being 10 years old and just walking around the parks and having a grand time. This video is more proof that the Magic Kingdom of my childhood is not the current Magic Kingdom.

One thing that I found daft with it, that it has a fixed ending, so it doesn't matter what side you choose, Rey always wins at the end. If they did a multi ending story, so you could have the First Order win with Rey being killed or captured. Then if you reduced to cost to say about £2000 for the 2 nights and have all inclusive as well as alcohol, then it could have been a better experience. Make it non cannon as well, so you can allow for the different endings. Then you could also each year switch to the different Star Wars eras, each with it's own multi ended storyline. Just think if they did that, how much better it would have been. Even swapping between the different trilogies every 4 months.

Imagine making a Star Wars themed hotel, and instead of basing it on the movies that everyone loves and has stood the test of time for decades, you base it instead off the trilogy that almost everyone hates and more or less helped kill off the brand as a merchandising juggernaut. I've made this comparison before, but this really would be like if Universal decided to make a Legend of Zelda or Super Mario themed hotel, and instead of basing it around Nintendo's games, they instead base it around the Philips CDI ones. You deserve failure at that point.

I feel like there's a two-fold problem with Galactic Starcruiser. First, and most obvious, is the price. Ain't no hardcore Star Wars fan spending 6000 buckazoids a night for that 'experience'. People who have that kind of money don't go to Star Wars cosplay resorts. Who is going to bring their kids - y'know, the target audience for Disney Star Wars - at that kind of price? Secondly, the less obvious, is that immersion is a hard thing to do. The concept of a Star Wars themed hotel with the staff in costume and in-character is.. good, actually. It's the sort of thing I would enjoy, at a reasonable price - but trying to make it an 'experience' with some Rebellion story that you're encouraged to participate in, that's... a bit harder. Immersion is hard, anyone who's even done regular LARPing knows how weird and difficult it can be to really feel in-character, and that's when you're with your friends, or at least friends-of-friends. Doing it in an expensive resort with people you don't know - who you know are just there becasue they're paid to do it - is a lot to ask of the average Star Wars fan. You can't manufacture the kind of comfortable, playful atmosphere required of a LARP or Renaissance Fair with a corporate hand. It's just going to feel uncomfortable and forced, and nobody has a good time. Nobody pays for that experience twice, and most won't pay for it once. Especially at 6000 bucks a head.

Now, lets say, hypothetically, that somebody once told me that the world would proceed to roll me, and made the claim that I was not, the smartest tool in the shed. Which would lead us to look at the facts and see that she was looking kind of dumb, due to the fact that she had placed her finger and her thumb, in the shape of the letter L, located on her forehead. This would mean that the years would start coming, and logically wont stop coming, that I was, hypothetically, fed to the rules, which would proceed with me hitting the ground running. Which didn’t make sense, to live for fun, in a way that your brain gets smart, yet your head gets dumb, seeing as there’s so much to do, and so much to see, so now I must pose the question, what is wrong with taking the backseat? This is due to the fact that you’ll never know if you don’t go, nor you will shine if you don’t glow. For you see, you are, at this moment, an All-Star, so get your game on, and proceed to go play, indeed, you’re an All-Star, get the show on, which would entitled you to get paid. That would mean that all that glitters, is indeed gold, and that only shooting stars, can participate in the process of breaking the mold.

If it had been a star wars village and regular guests could've been costumed like extras in a film, even given a chance to actually be in one of their new films, and this was one level of the experience for the tiny niche, that could afford it that could've worked.

Correct me if i am wrong, but wasn't one of the things the Star Cruiser hotel did was because of immersion, not having any outdoor-windows in the rooms? They sold this by saying complete immersion. The problem with this is that we as human being kinda need natural light. Not having access to natural light makes us more depressed and is kind of unhealthy. There is a reason we invented windows with glass and why prisons have a time for prisoners to be outside.

True. In the UK we introduced a window tax on the basis that richer people have larger houses and therefore more windows and they can afford more in tax. As a result, the owners boarded up their windows causing health problems for many people for years. They soon replaced this with income tax, which we are still trying to avoid paying.
