doesn't that depend on who you are saying it to? like, if you just call a black woman Oprah, she's not going to feel complimented, not because Oprah isn't beautiful but because you just called her out of her name. Lizzo isn't ugly because some people prefer thin women. She's just not their type. I never understood why, when it comes to men, no one calls them ugly when they are fat but women are called ugly for not being a size 2. They're considered fat If they're size 6 up.

@DoubleO88

@@ReiShs i kinda see what you're saying but i think this study dove has done probably isn't focused on actual female gamers and nerds who would hate this ad but a large random focus group of women which probably consists of fake geek girls and just women who's probably only "game" they've ever touched is bejewelled. It's a fact as drinker pointed out, that girls ON AVERAGE like to insert themselves into characters while boys ON AVERAGE insert the characters into themselves. There's a reason why Sci fi and fantasy was largely a boys thing now it's become profitable and popular a lot of fake geek girls want to hop on so these companies try to cater to them which leads to more vapid and less imaginative products, remember the majority of women can consume (if the thing is popular) but they struggle to create ON AVERAGE. Not all women, with some exceptions and some women are based but as a WHOLE MAJORITY, women are more about themselves and need to insert themselves into things, it's no surprise why the first Mary Sue was created by a woman.

She actually used the words "we're basically taking worse photos", which is surprisingly honest, but I guess it's a strange enough twist to merit that. I mean, if you hire a model who works out and has abs, where is the female empowerment in erasing that in post?

Most people love to see beautiful paintings, because they can show you so many new things. Narcissists just want a mirror, because all they ever want to see is themselves. The entire reason I love playing video games is so I can do things that I can't in real life. Fighting dragons, flying spaceships, saving the universe, etc. And my favorite characters are usually not even human. Orcs, dwarves, aliens, robots, whatever. Because those kinds of things spark my imagination way more than anything realistic ever does. That's why all this "it need to represent the world around us" crap that's become so common shows that these creators don't have an ounce of imagination or creativity in them. If they did, they wouldn't want to make their fantasies match reality, because that inevitably makes them BORING.

I've been trying to find out for MMOs for example, who plays which roles? When I play MMORPGs, I create all types of characters, dwarves, elves, nonhuman, female, etc. I almost never choose or create a toon that looks like me. I create the characters to be characters, and I role play them. It makes it more fun and immersive. I know some people that have replied say they create close to themselves. To each their own, but I don't see the fantasy and fun in that.

Seriously she was disgusted and said it was exploitive, particularly in the case is the girl in the wheelchair and with Down's Syndrome. Tell your mom not to worry about fictional superheroes. If she's made it to 82 she's a real superhero. And the head injury corps? Already been done. At the end of World War II the German army started forming battalions of soldiers who wouldn't otherwise be fit for combat. Many of them had medical issues or disabilities and they were grouped together so the army could more efficiently treat them in the field. Why all this? Because Germany was out of manpower and absolutely desperate. That anyone would think a "300 lb female corps" would be a good idea (and these people exist) shows how out of whack the world has become.

What I find so incredibly damaging by this mindset is that It's quite literally glorifying obesity. I personally was getting a bit overweight (I'm 29) I was touching over 220 lbs so about 40 pounds overweight. I was having the most horrific panic attacks seemingly at random. I decided to put that excess energy to good use and start exercising for an hour a day. 5 months in and I've lost 30 pounds, most of my belly fat is gone, I feel like a new person. I have freaking leg muscles now, I'm not self conscious whenever I go out in public and now I actually have stamina. This idea where "we shouldnt have to try to do anything or better ourselves in any way, You be happy that you're obese" is such a destructive mindset. Its not healthy... at all, both mentally and physically. I just find it so sad that all these people are so miserable where the mere depiction of a woman who is fit and attractive makes these people angry. I dont want to play as some obese loser in a video game, I want to play as someone I look up to. Also like you guys mentioned, why is this only an issue with women? Last time I checked there are PLENTY of women who actually have body types like the first girl in that commercial, thats not unrealistic lmao. Its the freaking men characters who look like roided out hulking masses of muscle that are the unrealistic bodies. You wouldn't be able to get anywhere even close looking like kratos, zangief, master chief, w40k space marines, serious sam, or jax from MK naturally without any steroids or supplements. Do guys complain? No of course not, we look up to that and get inspired to work out. I didnt lose weight for anybody other than myself, I feel like I'm 10 years younger again, hell I feel better than that! As I was a heavy drinker/smoker back when I was 20. When did people just stop working towards anything in life? Its like everyone just wants to be handed trophies for existing. You guys hit the nail on the head when you said these people making this ad arent gamers. Because actual gamers dont just want to see themselves in every medium, they want to play as cool characters. I wish this fake gamer activist crowd would just fuck off and quit ruining gaming for everyone. We dont live in some age where we see nothing but fit attractive women in games, Its literally the exact opposite now. Just look at all the new women in overwatch, look what they turned ellie into some man bodied lesbian, look what mk11 did with all the female characters, removed their curves and covered them all up. Look at what they did to aloy from horizon zero dawn, they objectively made her uglier and gave her facial hair. In this day and age you have a better chance at finding the missing link than you do seeing an attractive woman in video gaming.

I am Link. I am a tall, blonde-haired (who had it long in the 90s and now), would be twinky but had some muscle, left-handed, white male with green eyes (green for the hat). I, by their very sight, should be the PRIME example of being "represented" because I should be able to project myself onto Link. I don't identify with Link, or feel represented by Link in any way apart from "he's left handed". I want to BE LINK. When playing Link's Awakening on the Game Boy, I literally was envisioning myself AS Link going through the dungeons and gathering the instruments for the Wind Fish. I didn't project myself onto Link, I put myself INTO Link and for a brief period after school I wasn't in Ontario, I was Link inside Eagle's Tower fighting a Kirby Rip-off enemy. As for the "left handed" part, you know who I admired more for doing things left-handed? Jimi Hendrix. Refused to play a guitar right-handed so he flipped a right-handed guitar around, re-strung it for left-handed use and made it FUCKING ICONIC. I know that not everybody may like Jimi Hendrix, that's cool. However to me, seeing this man absolutely go nuts on a Fender that he made into his just made him so much more for me. I am a white guy from Canada who can barely play guitar, I couldn't be any more unlike Hendrix. I always felt "represented" or "attached" to him as a role model for that drive. You don't need to be a mirror image of your heroes/role models/RPG character to be inspired or represented.

Yeah I disagreed with that part. I grew up with 3 sisters and 3 brothers and I remember very well similarities and differences between the way we used to play, and both boys and girls wanted to be their characters. We played together a lot but still in general girls preferred drawings, princessess etc. We, boys, generally wanted to be great fighters and great men (that we obviously weren't) and girls generally wanted to be beautiful, self-confident, shining princesses (they obviously weren't), so I totally disagree with that specific point they made in the video, girls weren't projecting themselves in their characters.

As a woman who is a diabetic because I got near to obese, what I see is we're once again pushing unhealthy body images. It used to be we all needed to be like Kate Moss; now we all need to be like Gabourey Sidibe. Women will always be under attack when it comes to our looks. I just want women to choose to be healthy, and I am sick of girls being taught the exact opposite.

I've seen a number of Greek statues, mostly in books. They tend to be the epitome of physical perfection. Even later with "Rubenesque" sculptures and paintings the figures are curvy. But not 400 lb. blobs. As a certified lard-ass, I am not offended by not being represented at all. This was essentially "the media" for our ancient ancestors. I think they were on to something back then.

Representation is impossible. No matter who you put in a movie or game, you leave people out. It's not about equal representation, that would take an infinite number of characters, all equally represented in screen time. No they take out characters to put in other characters. It's a zero profit change. Your not gaining anything, your taking away as much as you give.

If you listen to the Director's Commentary on Starship Troopers, you find out that Paul Verhoeven did that deliberately, he also deliberately chose actors who looked and acted like Soap Opera actors too. It was meant to be camp, cheesy and almost unreal, as a stark contrast to the brutal horrors of war later in the movie. He is a very smart director and he used the scriptwriter from Robocop (Ed Neumier) because he knew how to write great satire.
