Good review.. I drove one 7 months ago just to cross it off my list. I drove it home 90 minutes later. To those that test drove it like a jackhammer for 10 minutes then complained it torque steers like crazy, learn how to drive. Yeah it should have an LSD but better tires were a vast improvement. As a daily driver under $40G, I don't regret it. I rented a Charger for 12 days and I wasn't thrilled. Yeah I like rwd but that ass end oscillates in curves with uneven pavement and while smooth overall, it doesn't seem to like sharp impacts. Those coupled with a driver's seat that didn't work for me, I was glad I rented one before simply buying one after a road test. I didn't buy the N Line to go racing or impress anyone, but it's fun blowing the doors off Hemi Chargers and other unsuspecting vehicles when I'm in the mood. I have a GT3 Touring on order for the hooligan in me.

Good review. I have a 2021 Sonata SEL 2.5 non-turbo and I find the power adequate. But the fuel economy is awesome. I always get 42+ mpg cruising at 75mph. I drive from St Louis to Lake Ozark every weekend and this car always impresses. I even get compliments from young guys in jeeps at rural Missouri gas stations.

The Sonata N-Line and KIA K5 are impressive products. The 2.5L turbo coupled with the well known Hyundai/KIA/Genesis bumper-to-bumper and powertrain warranties is especially noteworthy. Obviously the Korean automakers have a lot of confidence in the engine as they're offering it on both the KIA and Hyundai midsize sedans, along with the KIA Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs as well as in the Genesis GV80 and G80. It's also found on the Korean version of the Stinger and will certainly be offered next year on the US spec Stinger. Being a GTI owner I'm happy to see the Korean automakers offer a much improved 8 speed dual clutch transmission with the N-Line and GT models. It may not match the quick shifting and solid performance of VW's DSG but it apparently comes close. The absence of AWD on any of the Sonata variants and on the K5 GT is a shame. (It's offered on the lower trim non-turbo versions of the K5.) But its absence is understandable given the expected low "take rate" for "high performance" versions mainstream midsize sedans. Toyota and Nissan follow the same pattern as KIA where the Camry V6 models and the Altima SR-VC turbo where AWD is unavailable. Toyota says fewer than 5% of all Camrys have V6 engines. If the V6 Camry offered AWD it would probably amount to no more than1500 sales a year in the US. Even fewer for KIA and Hyundai. From the automakers' perspective it's not worth the expense. If AWD is a priority better to wait for next year's Stinger with the N-Line/K5 2.5L turbo engine. On the other hand I think the failure to offer either an electronic or mechanical limited slip differential on the N-Line and K5 GT is a missed opportunity. VW sees fit to provide an electronic LSD on the much less powerful GTI and I'm skeptical about trying to put the 300+ HP and torque down in a FWD vehicle without one. Not everyone minds torque steer and wheel hop with WOT from a dead stop but it's hardly a sign of quality engineering. Avoiding the issues means not accessing the higher performance a consumer is paying for. Still, the Korean twins are impressive. The N-Line's exterior styling is unique to say the least. Personally I prefer the more conventional looks of K5 but YMMV. As in other closely related models from Hyundai and KIA the former bend toward a more luxurious vibe and the latter to a sportier image. Personally I'm more drawn to KIA's design language. And in terms of specifics I prefer the conventional transmission lever in the K5 over the trendy dial control of the Sonata. Hyundai counters with better eye candy in the cockpit than the K5. As always, tastes will differ. Despite the kudos, though, I'm inclined to mention one other point. I keep an informal list of the most ridiculous features offered on current new cars. For several years the automated parallel parking system on my GTI has topped the list. (If you can't parallel park a GTI you shouldn't be allowed to own one.) The "Sounds of Nature" found on almost every single Hyundai/KIA/Genesis vehicle now tops the list. Unintelligible chattering in an open air cafe? The sound of rain piped into the cabin on a sunny day? We get quite enough of the real thing here in the Pacific NW. Birds chirping in a "lively forest"? Go look for a forest and open a window. A "warm fireplace" and "calm sea waves" designed to allow a driver to relax for a short nap? Don't we already have enough drivers sleeping in gridlocked Seattle traffic???

I have a Limited and the extra features on it win out over the N Line in my opinion. It comes with Pirelli tires that handle a lot better than the ones they were previously using and the 1.6 Turbo has enough power to get out of its own way no problem. I had a Stinger GT for a while before it got bought back for defective paint. It is nice having the power but what's the use if your always stuck in traffic or worried about the cops pulling you over? Also the lower fuel economy is with you whether your going fast or slow. The Limited has surround view camera as well as blind spot cameras in the cluster. It also has cooled seats and other features not on the N Line. I think you should try both and then decide.

I’ve been thinking about this channel and have appreciated Tom’s work throughout. However, times have changed so much and car reviews are everywhere. While off putting to some, I think these days car channels are more than reviews, and are really a form of entertainment and more like top gear, rather than just a buyer’s guide. Because there are so many car reviews out there now, I think you need more and varied content like the state of industry or unique cars or unique takes on reviews. It’s just not enough to do straightforward reviews.

@Catholic Firefighter I totally get you -- but badge snobs are worried about the BRAND -- I am not at all. I want the best car regardless of brand. But that includes aesthetics, and the Hyundai is beautiful...except for that badge on the front. Which is why I'm saying -- right now I lean heavily toward the Kia, given that most of everything else is kind of equal...

I don't think this actually has a heated steering wheel. Can you double check? Agreed that an LSD would be worth every single penny it cost - even if they took away a feature in exchange. This is a wonderful car that i hope is successful because I want more of them.

I own one in the US, and it doesn't. If you're from Canada or virtually anywhere else, though, you get tons more features. I definitely do wish it did have a heated steering wheel (on top of maybe an LSD, although the price would skyrocket). Still, I love this car! So fun to drive 😍

The Kia has it I believe. It's like that one feature that's a must have for me because I lose gloves really fast :-). I'm a little torn between this and the Kia because I think the Hyundai looks better and has a nicer dash design but I don't like fake suede and cold fingers :-P. Enjoy the channel . Thanks for the reply.@@DrivenCarReviews

48k technically, high price but still great value. You'll be paying roughly the same price for an N-line Tucson but it has a lesser build quality and doesn't even come with the 2.5T engine and wet DCT, and the Sonata is more fuel efficient too.

Same. I don't know why so many automakers are going with either the whale shark look or the smiling cat look these days. Jeeps might not be perfect but at least they look like cars!

If only they would get rid of the gloss black plastic, especially around the shifter and infotainment area. I don't know why so many manufacturers do this - it looks disgusting after a while, unless you clean it every few days.... and even new it just looks like, well, plastic....

it's too bad this only comes in mid trim. it's missing 360 camera, remote parking, blind spot camera, passenger power seat adjustment and what not.

Extra annoying because other markets do get their Sonata N Line with additional features like memory seat positions, heated rear seats, 360 degree cameras. Those are only available in the US Sonata on the Limited trim. Would have been nice to have the option of paying a little more for an N Line with those additional quality-of-life features.. but, the positive take is that it saves some $ on the US model and the car is still great fun to drive.

@@TJDST4 it's actually spontaneous combustion in the driveway. Going on since 2015. Hyundai/Kia refused to acknowledge, then Kia recalled 300,000 vehicles. Tons of pissed off customers.

Yep, definitely a reach. But still, the two are about the same price which is amazing. The extra raw materials alone on the Hyundai should add a lot of cost. An advantage of making your own steel.
