Thank you for the great video, you made the project a LOT easier for me and I didn't have to trial and error myself.

Thanks for this video. I was trying out your method here without using the drill, but had no luck. Picked up the socket adapter and it went right in!

Thanks George! I always have a very hard time getting these inserts in. Drilling that 5/8" 'shelf' so that the insert goes in square is what I have been missing.

Great video, just bought a lathe, thanks!! Anyone know the cheapest place to get these brass connectors?

This place has everything and they ship quickly: www.mcmaster.com/

As an Australian I’m very proud to know that your favorite tap handle is made from a Banksia nut
@gfotinakes3163 жыл бұрын
Yes! You should gather some, you could make $10 each for them in the USA. By the way, in what state are you viewing my video? I would like to add a pin to my map for all my video replies. Thank you!

I'm having trouble with the wood splitting when I start driving in the insert. Do you have any tips on that?
@gfotinakes3162 жыл бұрын
1. Are you drilling the proper size pilot hole? Check a larger size in scrap wood. 2. Notice in the picture my wood is in a vise. Are you able to put side pressure from a vise and vertical pressure from a hand clamp or large "C" clamp while you drive in the insert? 3. Are you using a variety of wood that splits easily? 4. Try dripping super glue in the hole, it may soak into the wood fibers and prevent splitting. Good luck!

New Turner here, thanks for the tip! I'm wondering what kind of chuck you use to attach the bolt to your lathe. Thanks!
@gfotinakes3168 жыл бұрын
I used a 2MT drill bit chuck. These chucks have many uses on your lathe. (You can drill horizontal holes for example). Here is its location on the Amazon website: PSI Woodworking Products TM32 1/2-Inch Diameter Drill Chuck with a 2 MT Mount Make sure your lathe takes an 2MT taper if you get this one.

I think the brass thing is a mic stand adapter
@gfotinakes3163 жыл бұрын
It may work like a mic stand adapter, but it actually has wood cutting threads so you can drive it into a slightly smaller wooden hole. You can get these at ACE hardware. By the way, in what state are you viewing my video? I would like to add a pin to my map for all my video replies. Thank you!

Thanks for posting this video. Do you know the part number of this insert from McMaster-Carr?
@gfotinakes3169 жыл бұрын
+Joe Hunter It is either 90016A031 or 90016A033 do some checking around and see if the thread is 16 or 24 on a beer tap before your order. I hope this helps.
@joehunter6929 жыл бұрын
+George Fotinakes Thanks for answering my question. I really don't know if it's 16 or 24. But the price is so low that I ordered both.
@dougputt43859 жыл бұрын
+Joe Hunter what one worked?
@joehunter6929 жыл бұрын
+Doug Putt It's the 3/8 with 16 TPI I bought it from Lowes (Item #: 137397) and it works great. I paid $1,63 each. Your other option is to use the ferrule. I bought some from amazon. They cost anything between $5 and $2,50 depending on the amount you buy. My favorite way is to simply buy the tap and make the tread on the wood. The tap will cost you $8, but you can mane an infinite amount of handles with that. I've done a loot of research and I've made a few handles already. I will make a video (eventually?) about it. I hope that helps.

Can you tell me the McMaster-Carr item number you purchased?
@gfotinakes3167 жыл бұрын
Mike Homer I can't seem to 66find my old paperwork. You can almost see the number on the bag in the video. I know that it is a 3/8" x 16 threads per inch brass insert that goes into a 1/2" drill hole. Sorry, that is the best I can do.
@mitka127 жыл бұрын
Mike, did you find the item number?
@MikeHomer167 жыл бұрын
I ended up with an Amazon equivalent that is even cheaper. Would love to order from a smaller retailer, but was too difficult to get what I was looking for. Thanks for the help and the inspiration.
@gfotinakes3169 жыл бұрын
Use a small piece of metal (bent paper clip) to measure the depth of your insert. Now place it next to your drill bit and mark it with tape 1/8" beyond the that size. Drill into the wood and use your bent paper clip to check for depth to be a little (1/8") deeper than needed. Good luck! Are you French?
