Looks fun! SOW is a good track for street cars. A few observances for your body roll: Your tires are awesome, but a little too sticky for stock old suspension bushings. With that much mechanical grip, it really shows how old and worn out suspension bushings can get. New suspension bushings, some strut tower braces and properly sized sway bars would make a world of difference. You can run a GT wing and splitter to really make use of the aero of the FD and make it really stick in corners that much better. Also, for cooling, put the undertray back on, makes a huge difference with directing airflow through the radiator and oil cooler. Just like electricity, air takes the path of least resistance.
@laxbrobrandon
@laxbrobrandon 2 жыл бұрын
I'm no pro but I assume some of this would help the body roll he was talking about in the beginning. Making the whole thing a lil more planted around curves?
@brycekovalik2381
@brycekovalik2381 2 жыл бұрын
Getting some new (hopefully poly, Delrin or Spherical) bushings would reduce some of the slop where the control arms mount to the chassis. I dont believe it would specifically help roll, but it would make the car more predictable.
@home541_

I also feel he will want a stiffer spring. He got an off the shelf ohlins kit for a road car. At the last shop I worked at a customer went from Sport Cup 2’s to Hoosier A3’s on a 991.2 GT3. He said the difference was night and day but the mechanical grip was overwhelming the stock springs and he was adding a ton of body roll. Ideally going to a spherical bearing would be best especially with that much grip to remove any sort of bushing deflection
@scotty305
@scotty305 2 жыл бұрын
@@home541_ FD RX-7's have some regular bushings but also a few spherical bushings from the factory. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHuvqIxoqcSNmtk . Ohlins kits are at least 2x stiffer than stock RX-7 springs, IMHO if he's not hitting bump stop or rubbing tires I would keep the springs as-is for fear of making the car even harder to drive.

If you stiffen up the suspension with that flimsy chassis, your chassis becomes the spring. And when your chassis has no spring qualities, it can only give in and buckle. The bouncing and porpoising at speed are given signs that you have no suspension, your struts are too stiff so everything else gives in: The tyres, chassis etc. Roll cage is not just a safety feature. It ties up the suspension points and makes the car rigid, so the suspension can be tuned. Also, no race car has side filler in fuel use. Ditch the original tank, put a fuel cell with a breather in it, and relocate the surge tank closer the to fuel rail.

"we need to stiffen the suspension", Stiff suspension doesn't do anything if the chassis is made of spaghetti. You can adjust the rebound dampening on the shocks but it wont be accurate or as effective if the chassis itself is twisting like a spring behind it. You want the chassis to be as rigid as possible so that the suspension can be accurately tuned to be compliant and do it's job.

Regarding the fans and overheating, with proper ducting fans will generally become more of a restriction than an aid when operating at speed. If turning the fans on helped, that points to your front end not funneling air through the radiator as well as it could. With good ducting there is seldom a need for fans above ~40mph on a front end cooling system. On a related note, my spiel is that fan shrouds are unnecessary if you can stay cool at idle and low speeds without one, although that depends on the application of course. Adding one (especially without vent flaps) will only pose even greater restrictions once you're up and moving. Think of that C8 shroud you just put on the 4-rotor and all its lovely flaps. Some other folks here mentioned hood vents as well which would certainly help. You want that air moving through and not exiting under the car. Well thought out ducting to the radiator doesn't do any good if it has nowhere to go. You've got a good bit of heat to deal with on that 3-rotor. Looking forward to seeing the updates on this car and how it improves for road-course duty.

I've always wondered about the cooling capacity on the 3 rotor. The 4 rotor too for that matter. It takes a LOT of cooling to keep a car cool on the track.

@@stevend4544 they built the car from the ground up to handle the cooling requirements, they did the math, and they had a lot more budget to make it work. Rob is starting with a pre-defined platform, a lot more unknowns, and forced induction. There's a lot more to keep track of on his side.

Love seeing this car on the track, and I'm really enjoying seeing you progress as a driver. I, like you, started doing track days and autox as a very build centric thing. Don't forget to keep tightening the loose nut behind the wheel.

the 4 rotor/787B became most popular as a result of its history in endurance racing ... good to see some prep in "real racing" and "real driving" with Grid life track days. lets get some AER or WRL action in honor of the heritage you are representing.

I love it!! More people at hpde. Im curious how well the coating is holding up on the inside. With a turbo I’m concerned it coming off and beating up the turbine.

Hello! I appreciated the effort that went into the dynamic in-car shots, but the "stabilizing" effect kinda gave me motion sickness. I really do appreciate the innovative idea, but for me it is not good. I would just stick to action cameras on multiple angles. For the sake of interest did you use a 360 camera for those or a action camera on a gimball mount?

Hmm yes, casual Rob brings a 1000hp straight line monster with a dogbox and the grippiest tires apart from full slicks... With ultra soft suspension and no roll bar. Enough lateral grip to leave some people behind in the corners without annoying them too much and just shoot to the distance with so much speed no one would ever think it was possible. I'm very excited and looking forward to seeing Rob and both RX-7s progressing on time attack this year
