@SamuelsShea3 жыл бұрын
@@KomodoPrazision420 I dont think so since it isn't just about power and numbers on a stat sheet. Ken's machines are practically tube frame race chassis with entire engineering teams behind them to make them as efficient and effective as possible. The 3 rotor is just an FD with mild suspension and very good/improving powertrain setup. There's just a huge engineering disparity between the two, so that's why I say the 4 rotor has a shot but not the 3 rotor. The 3 rotor can take almost anything else that has appeared on the show though.
@bigd58993 жыл бұрын
@@SamuelsShea engineering disparity doesnt mean a thing on the strip. Typically the more homemade and sh1tty a drag car looks the faster it is. Ive seen an 20 yo opel beat a demon last weekend. However more importantly rob runs drag radials whilst kens cars typically have some low sidewall race tire. Thats a very big advantage. I would guess that the 3 rotor doesnt come close in power but it will definitely have an advantage at launch. The four rotor with comparative tires might give the og hoonicorn a run for its money, if we ever see it race again that is.

Rob I was a hard-core enthusiast for the Mazda RX7 back in the day. I had a 1981 1st gen and an 1988 Turbo II. I used to buy the Racing Beat stuff and mod the easy way back then (I was under 18 years old so, you know). You've completely rekindled my love for the rotary engine, and I completely enjoy your channel. My favorite RX7 of all time is the FD and it's amazing to watch you do these insanely cool modifications to an already amazing car. Keep it up man! I'm 30 years older now, but you keep the spirit alive in me for the rotary engine. I might start tinkering soon if I keep this up lol. I always felt like these cars were better than a piston car. I turned to Honda after my rotary years, but there was a hydrogen version of the RX8 and it really has me intrigued. I currently run CNG fueled Honda Civic Natural Gas cars that are OEM; I'm far more into environmentally friendly fuels now and can't stand using gasoline. I haven't bought gas in 15 years, actually. I wonder what your race cars could do with 130 octane CNG???? Volkswagen used to kick ass and take names racing with a few CNG fueled Scirocco models.

Hey Rob! Big fan here... As a former engine calibration engineer, I have some tips for the boost/wastegate issue (hope you already know about this). PID-based control systems (especially, drive-by-wire throttle and boost systems) have something called "Pre-control" values. These are basically values that your PID controller starts with for calculation at any given point of Engine speed and fueling quantity. However, these are very important, in the sense that if you set this value right, your Boost Controller doesn't have to work that hard to match the boost. An example case: Say at full throttle @ 4000rpm, you need 15.6% wastegate opening. Without a pre-control map, the PID controller basically has to calculate the delta between desired and actual wastegate value, and that takes time and causes insane lag spikes/loss of power. However, if you had a pre-control map with a value of ~15% (at this point), your wastegate would already be open at 15% at this point, and the controller just needs to deal with the small deltas between desired and actual, giving you a lightning-fast response. Usually, there should be a pre-control map for every PID controller. I don't know if your ECU supports this, but do have a look. Hope you pull that wheelie! Cheers!
@zfpv72113 жыл бұрын
I think you’re using the electronic waste gate, right? So I assume it’s a PID controller to control boost? If so, that major drop in boost caused by the wastegate flying open then slowly stabilizing is due to excess P term, or not enough D term.
@salmon1313 жыл бұрын
watching the last vid on drive by wire, the whole time I was thinking he just needs to tune the PID params lol idk if they even use that sort of control but if they don't, they should
@zfpv72113 жыл бұрын
@@salmon131 I was thinking about that as well. I had a 2016 WRX that stock had a crazy non linear drive by wire setup that sucked. Simply by throwing a tune on it essentially made the throttle legit 0-100% (or so it felt). Basically a 1:1 throttle feel. Although the way a throttle body blade opens, the air flow is inherently nonlinear, more of an exponential curve. So the throttle blade should be controlled by a sort of square root extraction. Really lazy on bottom and increasing more from there. Basically an inverted exponential curve, yeah? Which can be done simply with a throttle curve table, really no need for PID unless you want some other parameter to make changes to throttle blade position dynamically unbeknownst to the driver.
@zfpv72113 жыл бұрын
@@salmon131 oh my bad, read that wrong. Yes boost should (and likely is) controlled by PID with an eGate. Throttle position, however, I don’t think needs to be.

@anonymous it’s a control algorithm. Proportional, Integral, Derivative.
@suryaraghavendran36273 жыл бұрын

That thing is pure violence on wheels. Having it setup and proper is going to leave scratches on the rear bumper cover! The fact it tried to lift the front end already, without having it dialed in the way you want it to be, is incredibly promising. Following the entire saga of learning, building, tuning, and subsequently driving the wheels off these projects has been a wild ride. Congrats on all you've accomplished, there is nobody before, and likely won't be anyone after, that gets as in depth with the entire process that you've documented so far.

Think you mean 4th, but he either just missed a gear or it wouldn’t go into gear. The chattering sound is his ignition cut so he can shift into each gear without load on the powertrain. That is a banger. I love the gear shifts. You are a crazy mad scientist. Definitely install a roll cage and wheelie bar on your iron chariot

I respect that you realize you are not an 8 second driver yet (I certainly am not either). I do want to say though that I hope you get a cage before you get too wild in this thing. Racing is an inherantly risky endeavor and people who do it are generally speaking not averse to taking risks. That is one of the things that makes them special. As somebody who is really growing fond of the stuff you are doing, I just want to ask that you keep at least one eye on your safety and not taking too many risks that are unnecessary. I know I get excited and sometimes lose focus on personal safety, but I always appreciate when people remind me to address my safety before encouraging me to keep going because it means they care about me. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy what you are doing here. I can not wait to see this thing on the 1/4 mile.
