When I was about 9 or 10, waiting for the Chelmsford connection on Shenfield station...the highlight of the day was waiting for, and finally seeing one of these Monsters thundering through the station, only inches from safety of the platform’s. I would listen for the sound of it’s whistle and then it would appear from around the bend, that unique growl and volcanoes of smoke rocketing out it’s roof as the driver would push a few more horsepower from the warship size engine. Standing far back from the edge I would watch it approach; stare in wonder as roared past me, swivel on my heels to watch it disappear on it’s Norwich bound journey, straining my ears to the last distant thunder rolling off into the countryside, some times coming back on the wind for one last time. What a train What I would not have done, was stare pointlessly up the way it had just come as it rumbled off behind me…………… So why, for goodness sake, WHY do camera operators not pan with the object of interest….Is there some esoteric or trade cameramans reason for planting on a tripod, pressing record, and retiring?????????????????

These locomotives never worked out of Liverpool Street and into East Anglia as far as I am aware. I suspect you are referring to the English Electric class 37, which were a mainstay on that route during the 1960’s and ‘70’s.

Wow, 2.40,not a trace of smoke from that locomotive, so why are some of the others so bad?
@willrussell21344 жыл бұрын
Its typically only when starting off that they smoke badly because 2 stroke oil gets stuck in the exhaust when idling which is then blasted out when they power up
@ScottieD534 жыл бұрын
Because this loco was on full power and has burnt off all the oil that has accumulated in the exhaust collector drum.Being a two stroke engine it’s more noticeable after the engine has been idling for a while or just been started up
@colinmiller55024 жыл бұрын
@@ScottieD53 thanks for that, I always wondered and thought it might be something to do with 2 stroke.

I went on one of those Deltics at Bury the ELR just before Covid struck, the amount of smoke coming out of that thing was a disgrace,some of the windows were open on the coach’s and we couldn’t breathe because of the amount of fumes coming from the locomotive,the engine must have been absolutely knackered to smoke like that but it seems to be a problem with some of them as it’s seems to be a problem with some of these locomotives,it’s either oil smoke or unburnt fuel because the injection timing is miles out,if it’s oil it’s burning it must be pouring in either because of wear or through the turbo seals,I can’t believe they are allowed to be operated in this condition when they kick up all the the fuss about diesel vehicles,if it was a truck it would be banned from the road immediately until it was repaired to a reasonable standard,again it’s one law for one and another for others.
@hirisk7612 жыл бұрын
cry harder.
@czeslawmeyer78712 жыл бұрын
It's a supercharged 2 stroke diesel so it's going to burn oil with the fuel ,heck my chainsaw chuffs out way more smoke than some of these ,that said I'm not even going to mention the lawnmower that takes about half hour to start and makes vegans and environmental activists cry and superglue themselves to my fence lol
@davidellis2792 жыл бұрын
@@czeslawmeyer7871 There’s a world of difference between a 2stroke Petrol and a 2stroke diesel,on a Petrol engine the oil is mixed with the fuel to lubricate the crankshaft and bearings as well as the bore and piston,this is NOT the case with diesel,lubrication is taken care of by an oil pump in the sump which lubricates everything including the valve gear which is NON existent on a petrol engine as there are no valves,every Deltic I’ve ever seen emits clouds of blue choking smoke which smells like unburnt fuel but they are a brilliant performer as most 2stroke diesel’s do..
@chrisbungostudios Жыл бұрын
@David Ellis I agree with you 100%. The diesel engine in this class of locomotive is grossly inefficient, not to mention environmentally harmful. You're a very brave man to point that out here!
@davidellis279 Жыл бұрын
@@chrisbungostudios Thanks for your reply,I been a heavy diesel fitter all my life and it saddens me that diesel gets such bad press when there’s been so much done to them to clean up exhaust emissions in the last few years,people see these engines and come to the conclusion that all diesels are the same when nothing could be further from the truth. I have a late BMW diesel and on start up from cold there is NO SMOKE or smell of diesel from the tailpipe whatsoever and it’s done over 126,000 miles,whenever I see these Deltics they belch blue smoke out which smells like unburnt fuel.
