I have a 1957 St. Joseph’s Missal which I bought in a thrift store in 1998 when I wasn’t even thinking of attending a Latin Mass. I just always looked for Catholic stuff- medals, pins, books, holy cards- in thrift stores, or second-hand stores. I have some beautiful old holy cards and medals acquired that way, and I got super lucky finding that 1957 missal!

The video is using Fr. Lasance’s missal that has 6 ribbons: 1st ribbon: Beginning of the Mass (either Aspergers or Prayers at the Foot of the Altar) 2nd Ribbon: At the beginning of the Holy Roman Cannon i.e., Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy) 3rd Ribbon: Cycle of the Sundays (ribbon of Sunday worship) 4th ribbon: Where the current date is for the daily mass 5th ribbon: Accounts of Feasts and Lives of the saints 6th ribbon: first Fridays or Requiem Mass, Mass of Our Lady on Saturdays

@@SusanHartman915 The Asperges is the sprinkling with Holy Water. It's done before the prayers at the foot of the altar. I'm not sure what missal you have but it probably is a page or two before the start of the Mass. The Asperges isn't always said at Mass. So, For a beginner it's probably best to just start at the 'prayers at the foot of the altar'.

When I got my Fr Lasance Missal (1993 edition), I read through the whole beginning section on how the Missal works, the and the Mass works. There’s a section on the vestments and sacred vessels etc. it’s wonderful! I love the Prayer section at the back and the short bios about the daily saints as well. I wish it had a better table of contents at the beginning of the Missal, although that does make you need to become familiar with it and peruse through the whole book. Love it!

very informative. I'm using my 1962 Missal once in a while during mass to show one of my children about where we are during the mass, or if I brought someone new to the mass. The entire mass for me from start to finish how Monsenior and the altar servers interact and the praters are just so beautiful that I would prefer to silently watch and lift up their prayers. The reverence exhibited for this mass is quite awesome.

Thank you for this video, I'm studying Catholicism as a project to myself to see how I feel about the religion and its practices before attending anything. I've been studying it for the past year now. I started with the Rosary after being called to start that during a low time in my life and had no idea what the rosary was. I did that for about 7 months and now I'm looking deeper into the religion and have found all your books of prayer and have come to the Roman Missal. I love the prayers of the church and am even learning Latin because of it. So much of the church is venerated around the Latin language so, I decided I should start learning that as a deep dive to understand the culture even further. I started praying the Liturgy of the Hours but that was so confusing, I did get it eventually but I figured I would get a few other books to help me with the rituals and how their preformed. I'm so Glad that this book actually has notations of what should be happening at mass at that point. It's definitely enlightening about the church with out actually having to attend. I don't belong to any religion any more, but I love diving into them and learning everything about them so I can defend faiths when I hear conversation going on out in the world. I believe no one should attack anyone on faith so I'm learning them all just to be the neutral subject.

One way to keep them from fraying is to take a lighter and run the flame quickly over the bottom of each ribbon. It will melt it slightly and stop the fraying. Its an old seamstress trick. It worked with my St. Andrews ribbons. It will not work with natural fiber ribbons however.

I use my last (6th ribbon) on the section that has Eucharistic prayers and devotion. Sometime during the offertory I read and reflect on a prayer before receiving communion, and after receiving communion once back in the pew I read and reflect on a prayer after receiving communion. Lasance Missal (because it is only in English), but I intend to buy one someday (I just looooove English !!!). I have an old Missal, but it was not complete, so I purchased an old St André Missel (1955), with a beautiful leather cover, it has not been used a lot, it's like new. I will use it tomorrow for the very first time !!! So happy !!! I will go to Saint Eugène Sainte Cécile Church in Paris, they have a wonderful Schola, there. Please pray for the two priests of that parish who have spent a whole day at the police station this week, just because, we were not wearing masks during Easter Vigil !!!!!!!! I have an aunt's Father Lasance Missal from 1915 and my mother's St. Joseph Sunday Missal. However, the one I still use most often is the Marian Daily Missal the Benedictine sisters gave me in grammar school. I’m not sure if this is improper, but I usually have a ribbon at the “General Devotions” section at the back of the Fr. Lasance Missal & use for the ‘After Communion’ prayers when I get back to my pew after Communion. Then I go back to paying attention to Mass when the priest is doing the Communion/Post-Communion readings or the Last Blessing. But maybe those devotions are meant to wait until after Mass. I’ve spent most of my life going the the Latin Mass, but don’t remember learning about the ribbons, so generally ignored them & just used little holy cards as bookmarkers to flip between the Mass and the readings.

I wanted to add a comment about the different colored ribbons. There is a reason for the colors and their use. Open The Father Lasance Missal to page 49, exercise 5. In the chapter called “Read the Mass with The Priest- A Study Plan.” The gold or yellow ribbon is used for the high or low mass start point. To mark propers: The green ribbon is for Sundays after Pentecost and Sundays from Epiphany to Septuagesima where Green vestments are worn. The white ribbon is used to mark out propers of Masses for feast of our Lord, feast of our Lady, and feast of saints not martyrs. White vestments. The red ribbon is used for Pentecost, and feast of Martys - where red vestments are worn. The purple ribbon is typically used to mark out the masses in Advent and lent, and on certain other vigil, where purple vestments are worn. And the black ribbon is used to mark out the location for masses of the dead. Basically, the red green white purple and black ribbons have to do with masses where the same color vestments are worn…: page 49 in study plan chapter explains it all perfectly well. It’s kind of a type of way to train the laity for type vestments I suppose. I don’t really use them that way. But that’s the reason they’re like that.

The instructions in the fr lance missal for the ribbons say : yellow ordinary of mass. Green: Sunday after pentecost. White: feasts of our lord. Red: pentecost, feasts of passion. Purple: advent or lent. Black: masses for the dead. After that says Priest at the altar wears vestments showing the days color-the ribbon colors correspond.

One can get Latin missals from leaflet Missal company also GIA Publication Inc.of Chicago Illinois did have latin missals. They also have a number of Latin music resources. If you don't have a Latin Mass in your area, ask your Priest if a weekly Latin Mass can be scheduled in your parish you already attend.Vatican 2 never ruled out Latin Mass in any parish. Also if your parish uses organ, mention it to your Parish Music Director in a polite way if Latin music can be brought into mass there. Parish Music Directors do listen to parishioners requests they can at times get the Parish Priest to change things or do something new in the parish There are many times Latin music in the missal or hymnals your parish already uses that just isn't being used mention it to your Music Director and even if your parish is contemporary worship still talk to the Music Director about a Latin Mass being brought into the parish.Vatican 2 did not end or forbid the Latin Mass or use of Latin music at mass the individual parishes themselves ended it Speak up you want a traditional Latin Mass at your parish being respectful to Music Directors that a contemporary music mass can still remain there as well.

Can you please go over the other regular English missals for Sunday and weekdays. Which is best? So many versions to choose from and a bit confusing. Now is a great time for people to get one and learn it since the church is not allowed to have any papers, books, hymnals etc. because of the virus. Thanks!

I wish mass wasn’t this complicated, I just like going and praying and showing respect

It's not complicated, if you go to a Latin Mass go ahead and just sit down and absorb it all, go ahead and pray a rosary during the mass. It's just the prayers of the Latin Mass are so beautiful. Go and offer God everything during the mass, you don't have to follow the missal if you don't choose to, the priest is praying those prayers on your behalf already.

This is optional. There are misals with the readings of the English Mass. You can just go and pray if you prefer but the mass is much more beautiful when you go that extra mile in order to understand it.

The Latin Mass is the best place for that. You don't actually have to worry about any of the ribbons and stuff. I don't even bother using my missal much of the time. Just know that the sacrifice is happening and offer up your prayers, meditate on the homily during the mass.

I put ribbon at the beginning of mass, the next ribbon moves along with the progression of the mass so I always know where to go when toggling back and forth to other sections

Can’t wait ! Also what do I purchase? Is it a missal? We go to Latin daily mass and while I can’t follow from a book because I hold my baby. I would like to get these for my older children. I see people holding their books and following along and I just don’t know what to get. Both our catholic stores in our town closed two years ago. I need to order online and don’t want to order the wrong thing 😣
