The guts can be cut to reduce the amount of "buzz" that the snare drum has. The more guts you have on the snare, the more "buzz" you're going to have. Cutting some of them simply reduces that texture. It's all a personal preference - some people don't cut any guts whereas others cut a ton. It's all up to you (or your instructor) and the ensemble's preferred sound.

Hope I didn't miss this in the video, but how often do you feel is necessary to tune the guts of your snare drums? Just before contests? More than that?

How am I supposed to know the first tune for the first string? To go off of. Because my marching snare sounds so bad and I ha e tuned the top head and bottom head perfect. I don't know why it still sounds like poop. It's a low ringing noise

i found that i had done that just a week or so ago. One of my student's drums sounded like a wooden box with no crack to it all, just thump. I'm ashamed to say it took me several days to notice and correct my error. Whoops. :(

Ah, you're right, I should have done that! Sorry!
