After some research, I should have left the car on while draining the last of the fluid. I have since redone the procedure properly.

You are not supposed to turn off the car when you drain the excess fluid. You need to keep the internal DSG pump running when you set the level. This is also the reason why you saw fluid coming out before the level tube was removed. The engine was off so the internal pump was not running and circulating oil. This is an easy job but I see so many do something wrong.

@@chrisgee2616 check the VAG service manual. If the car don't run, you will remove more oil than required resulting in a gearbox failure. Should be quite simple to understand the logic behind having the car running. You can try at home : take a bucket of water, a hose with the 2 sides in the bucket, add a fish tank water pump. Let the water pump run, you will see that the water level inside the bucket will go down as part of the water will be in the hose. Stop the water pump, the water level will rise. now I think you can understand why it's important to have the engine running to get the correct amount of oil.

got same pressurized pump. switching between my ZF tiptronic audi service fluid to VAG DSG OE fluid I didnt want to wash it out with soap and water... just not keen on that when fluid types are pretty similar. so I took a few new disposable 24 oz beer cups and filled them with the 37K old DSG fluid when draining it and then flushed the ZF traces out one cup at a time. when I filled it with new VAG DSG then I pushed out a bit to get all new blood in the passat. its so nice using this pump - well worth it. And its an instant payback verses dealer rates. ALso I used the plastic low profile drive up ramps for the front wheels and then got 2 jacks for the back and another set of ramps as wheel chocks. used a 3' level to check body level and had plenty of room under car to do the job. its nice not needing to drop the pan on the DSG and play with gaskets. I AGREE THAT HE SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE CAR RUNNING ON FINAL DRAIN - IF ENGINE OFF THEN FLUID DRAINS INTO THE PAN AND IT WILL BE UNDERFILLED if draining then. after reinstalling the battery, its taking a little while for my TDI passat to relearn itself. Had to re-set the wheel pressure sensors. the reset of the idiot lights went off on the 3rd start, but I will clear codes when I get the schwaben reader hooked up.

Good job man...... ( see my info below) 1. Why lot of oil came out after removing the drain plug its because, the engine wasn't running and all working oil was at the bottom which settled above the black plastic level tube. 2. You need to drain excess oil while when the engine is idling, to ensure that all working oil is filled up in all channel's.

Gonna recommend to people for ease to just replaced dsg filter at 20k. Mine was done around that and noticed a slight lag on shift. New dsg filter soaked and runs back to normal. If you do heavy abuse an extra filter change between fluid intervals won't hurt. It's easy enough to do and shift points dependant on good fluid flow

It should and must be checked with the car running. When the car is running the oil is circulating in the system so the oil level in the pan is lower than when the car is turned off (as all the oil goes back to the pan). If you do the level with the car off, you're removing too much oil which is not good for your transmission.

No. Transmission Fluid needs to be checked with the engine running and at the specified temp. When its not running, the transmission pump isn't turning and pushing fluid. As a result, when the car is off, all of the fluid that's normally being pumped through the transmission drains into the pan. So when you open the drain plug when the engine is OFF you're draining the fluid that needs to be running through the system during normal operation. When draining, that's fine - you want to get it all out. When filling, the trans takes just under 5 Liters, so put in 5. Only when you have the level tube installed, engine running, transmission at specified temp can you open the plug to let the excess run out WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING AND THE TRANSMISSION PUMP IS SENDING FLUID THROUGH TH SYSTEM. Hope that makes sense.

Zed. This might be a dumb question. I purchase a mk6 GLI autobahn with 19.5k miles 3 years ago I’ve babied it pretty much and didn’t use it as my daily. Today after checking the ODO I have 31k miles. Been receiving emails about my car being past due for the DSG and 50k mile service from local VW dealer. Considering it’s a 2013 car purchased CPO from VW my question, besides the standered oil change, should I consider 40k/50k/dsg service since it’s time wise past due even though my ODO doesn’t reflect that? I’m sure if I call the dealer they’ll always recommend me spending money. What do you think? Thanks man.
@zed4me
@zed4me 5 жыл бұрын
You seem to understand how it works.. your car is "due" based on 10k miles per year, although your car has been driven less. While I appreciate you valuing my opinion, I guess I would only answer the question based on what I would do. If I was at 31k miles, I wouldn't do the DSG service yet. I would only do it if I wasn't expecting to get to 40k miles anytime soon. If you'll get to 40k in the next year or two, I would say its not worth doing the DSG service "early". That being said, if you never plan on driving the car often, servicing based on time instead of mileage is not a terrible idea. I always change my oil every year, even if I haven't passed 5k miles. Though I try and drive all my cars at least 10k miles a year.. no reason not to. Hope that helps!

@craigldavis
@craigldavis 3 жыл бұрын
No - it is the fluid that would be in the system when the pump is running. Transmission fluid level is set with the engine running and at a specified trans fluid temp just like other cars with a trans dipstick. This design just happens to be one where instead of a dipstick, the fill tube has a tube to set an exact level (overflows any excess).

One comment: My understanding is to keep the car in idle when you are letting the overflow drain out. Logic is when the pumps stop, fluid will stop circulating and accumulate in the pan. If you're measuring using the overflow tube, arent you actually over-draining the fluid level? This also explains why you have so much excess fluid when you first started to drain. It wasnt running, thus sitting in the pan and above the overflow level. Dude, if you said that 2 litters came out from the initial drain and it was factory-filled.....and you drained the new fluid with car off.....you might be short 2 liters in the DSG. If you're 2 liters short in a 5 liter system...its only 60% full. Hope you didnt put too many miles on the car since the change. Sorry, just saw the comments about underfilling a year ago. You should update your video at the end so DIY dont make the same mistake.

It is said that only a ''little'' will drain from removal of the first plug is to be expected--but thats never the case in my experience. A good amount should drain. When you pulled the leveling tube/ snorkel out; I'm sure if you isolated each amount, you would have more fluid that came out when you pulled the leveling tube than when you only pulled the main plug with the snorkel still in place. Cool tools. But it makes no sense to drop that kind of coin on a special kit that you'll use maybe twice during your entire lifetime owning the vehicle. I favor the top-fill (through the filter housing) method all the way. Measure how much comes out. Put exactly that much back in. Yes it's slower. Yes, you'll have to remove the battery. Deal with it. BTW. I also have that exact model of Schwaben power brake bleeder. The top is glued on. I have it reserved for brake fluid and brake fluid only. No way I want to risk mixing bake fluid with anything else! Now if I could rent those cool tools from an Autozone that might be another story.
