I see it as an homage to the 'classy' women characters portrayed in old '40s noir films. Her affectation aids in setting a noir vibe in a movie about a slacker looking for his rug.

So she eventually engages in some zesty coitus with Jeffery Lebowski- and insists on calling him Jeffery, not his dudeness, or dude-arino- et al. Maude, you a complicated feminist.

I became friend with a woman, a few months ago, during summer vacations, and she invited me to her home. A few days later, we had another night, talking and spending time together, when she suddenly jumped from her sit and ran into her room. I thought I made something wrong, yet I overheard her singing moments later, so I took patience instead and waited in the living room. I'm not an english-speaking person, but I understood some of the lyrics. It was a nice song, though, like an invocation/salute to the moon, or the ones we sing for children, before bedtime, and she had a lovely feminine voice. When she had finished, I came to check, and she looked absolutly fine, in her room. < So ? Invocation stuff is done with success ? < Yes. < I couldn't stop listening, though I didn't understood all of it. Yet it sounded like english. < It was. < About ? < The moon, and women and children, mostly. < Ah. So, you're having your period, then ? < Yes. It was a bit weird, yet very poetic and touching, but I couldn't stop thinking about that Maude Liebowsky scene. The character and my friend have a lot in common, and not only about the "vaginal art".
