4 year update?
@figgyscott3 ай бұрын
@@WeAreOne-31 While there were definitely things I loved about the bike (smooth ride, plenty (and then some) of power, adjustable windscreen, unique mirror placements), ultimately the seat height was too high for my 5'8" body/riding skill. I always felt nervous getting into situations when I had to maneuver the bike at low/walking speeds. So I sold it and bought a Honda Rebel 1100 DCT (automatic). Lower seat height, less weight (I think), and thus much more fun (and comfortable) to ride.
@WeAreOne-313 ай бұрын
@figgyscott Thank you for the update. I previously owned a 2014 BMW R1200RT & it was a total loss in an accident. I'm in the market for a similar motorcycle, but with more power. The 2016-2019 FJR is o an option that fits my wheelhouse. Unfortunately, I've been turned off by several reviews mentioning the top heaviness of the FJR. It's a lovely bike, but I'm sticking with the R1200RT. Ride safely 🙏🏾 ✝️

Great review, thanks! I own both a K1600GT and an FJR1300ES. They are definitely comparable in that they are both true Sport-Tourers. But there is enough of a difference to make me switch back and forth and enjoy the ride no matter which I choose. The K16 is a bit heavier, but OMG, what an engine! The Yamaha engine feels like a turbine that will pull forever. No one needs to feel embarrassed saving money on the FJR. It is very, very satisfying.

I like to take the bags off my FJR and cruise around. It makes a lot of people scratch their heads and say, "What is that thing?" One of my riding buddies has a naked Gold Wing that also confuses a lot of people.
@Billfish575 жыл бұрын
Ben Stabile - You, my friend, is someone I would love to talk to, I find myself stuck between buying one of your two bikes, or perhaps the new Gold Wing. They all seem adequate for touring, but only the FJR seems like it's real sporty, I just don't get the 100 mph limiter on that BMW GT. Does that ever bother you? To have all that power on tap, but have it stop accelerating while passing with on coming traffic seems like something that would bother the heck out of me. I don't need to go so fast, often, but I want to know I can when I want to. I'm leaning towards the FJR but the Gold Wing has such nice new tech on it now, it's hard to pass up, but it still seems so un-sporty compared to the other two bikes. Also, I have heard about reliability issues with the BMW, any with you?
@olli_k5 жыл бұрын
@@Billfish57 Hi Bill. I have too have both the FJR and the K16. My K16 is the GTL variant. As for the limiter at 100, doesn't seem to exist on mine as I have gone past that number on the speedo. As for reliability, the BMW seems to be holding up. I've only had it since August of 19 and I did get it used. It's a 2012 that was maintained by the selling dealership and the previous owner had a really bad case of OCD when it came to this bike. I was looking at the Goldwing before I purchased the FJR (2004 w/ ABS). And up until that point, I was set on getting one. it was "THE" bike for me. Until I took a test ride on one. I'll say that maybe it was the one particular bike that I rode but I was underwhelmed by the bike. So much so that I took it completely off my list. As for the tech on the bike. The FJR has none it, at least mine doesn't. I don't have the electronic suspension. I don't have cruise control (it does have a Throttlemeister). Of course the FJR doesn't have any kind of sound system, but that's what a bluetooth setup is for. When I purchased my FJR, I put on two of the RAM Mount two ball mounting things, the kind that go on where the brake and clutch reservoirs bolts go and then used the phone mount to hold my phone for navigation and audio. Now the BMW on the other hand, it has all the toys. But I find that once I set something, I don't really change it. The electronic suspension, I haven't changed the setting on it but a couple of times. I leave it on two up without luggage. The bike is my almost daily driver and so when Igo grocery shopping or have my stuff for work in the boxes, it rides just fine. I put a RAM mount on this bike too because the previous owner kept the nav unit and I am NOT going to spend $1,000 for a Garmin nav unit. I don't know if you have made a decision yet about which one to get, it has been three months since you posted your comment. Anyway, what ever you get you will most certainly enjoy. Ride safe my friend.

Best bang for the buck in the sport touring category. I’m on my third FJR, and I’m about to buy my fourth. I’m currently on a 2014 ES with 115k miles and she is as quick and handles like new. Switch over to Castrol Edge ASAP after break-in and with proper oil change intervals, and she’ll run forever. 115k of everyday riding, and she’s never needed a valve adjustment, and if you think she has power now, upgrade to a K&N air filter and Two Brothers slip-on exhaust. Buy a FJR: you will NOT be disappointed.

Also worth mentioning anyone looking at an FJR1300 is or has likely looked at a Kawasaki Concours 14. I used to have a connie 14, went to a Tiger 1200 (gearbox crapped out) so I'm looking to go to an FJR1300 merely for the cruise the connie 14 didn't have. But if you think the FJR1300 has torque and power, the Connie 14 is insane. She's a bike that can roll with the sport bikes on the weekend and hit the interstate on the weekdays.

I think this is the TOP of the Sport Touring bikes. The only thing that it doesn't have is some type of Shift Assist like BMW has. My buddies get 50 mpg on their FJR'S. My wife hates the backseat or I would have one. I like it better than the K1600. The K1600 is more like a sporty Goldwing. It's too heavy for what it is. Thanks for the test ride !
@johnc89105 жыл бұрын
Riding "sensibly" at say a steady 60 mph, you can squeeze 60 mpg out of a gallon of REGULAR gas which will give you over 350 miles on a tank of gas. Of course, who buys an FJR to ride sensibly. I didn't. The bike will run all day at 100 mph (don't ask how I know this) as long as you have fuel in the tank. In fact, the only difference between 120 - 125 mph and that is the increased wind noise (REALLY don't ask). And very few FJR owners like the stock seat. You look at an FJR (like mine :)) kitted out for regular long distance travel and you generally see three ergo mods: a better seat, handlebar risers, and a larger windshield. A serious LD rider will also fit an aux fuel tank. Of course, you then lose the passenger accommodation. If the only reason you do not have an FJR is your wife's dislike for the rear seat, try to find an FJR with a custom seat such as a Russell or Laam.

It was a dream to ride, loved the LED package, cruise, windscreen, quiet angle-cut gear 6spd with slip assist clutch, and customizable heated grips. It was a freeway missile, but i didn’t enjoy hustling it though canyons and mountain roads as much. I would buy it again as an ES though as long as I can have a second smaller bike.

Next time raise your forks 3/8 higher ( which lowers the front ) set the preload on soft ... lowers the bike a little more & allows the bike to tuck the corners & trail brake through the twisties ... hard on the preload ( always ) set the spring on the rear for only 20 mm. Of drop when sitting on the bike ... adjust the damping in the front ( on right bottom front fork ) to 5 clicks ( stiff ) 42lbs air in rear & 40 lbs front ..... ( change head bearings to roller ) ... & you will smoke the race bikes & have a bike that carves the twists..... I had the ES model & gave it back to be able to fine tune the suspension .... ( trust me the base model suspension is tuned more to sport then the ES . Just need to set the bike up properly or have a suspension guy set it up to be more aggresive ....

hi duke, i own one of these puppies.. and i agree with everything you've said...except for the bit about the damned styling. personally i believe these bikes are the epitome of continent crushing touring machines.. the sculpted lines, angry attitude, the fantastic handling that provides hours of heart racing riding..(especially over here in Wales; United Kingdom where we have some of the best biking roads in the world).. but that's the style of this machine.. you're not going to get this comfort, ride, handling, spec, on anything else. for 20 years now Yamaha have been making the FJR1300, and apart from a few aesthetic changes they didn't change much until this new gen 3. but, even now it still uses the same engine, same gear box and i believe the same chassis. that's not something you can say about many other bikes or manufacturers is it. it's a style many have tried to copy, but only Yamaha have perfected it..nothing else really comes close. other than that man, bloody good review, loved it.. thank you

Same chassis and engine, yes, but starting in 2016, the gearbox is different. MamaYama managed to fit a 6 speed into the same crankcase castings. And as far as styling is concerned, even with the tuning forks on the side of the gas tank, my 2013 is regularly confused with a BMW.

I can handle the styling but I think $18K is about $2K too much, The BMW GS1600 may list for $27K but can be bought new for less than that at dealers just 2 years ago. Some dealers let them go in October for $23K

Hey, I had the 2005 and I found it to be kinda buzzy in the seat and handlebars. Did they smooth this out or is it the same?
@davidfacciponti83044 жыл бұрын
I have a 2018 ... little less buzz because you have the 6th gear .... they basically moved the buzz from 70 mph to 80 mph .... between 3800 rpm & 4800 rpm .... same shit diffrent. Day .... ( synthetic oil & changing oil frequent helps I noticed when I changed the head bearings to all balls lol I know it sounds funny .... but it did help the buzz in the handlebars .... between the 2 things it's not bad .... not perfect .... but acceptable.... ( by the 2016. Change the head bearing & it's a game changer ( even with handling & zero wobble between 30 & 40 with hands off the bars .... ( its inherent in half the bikes with the head shake .... hope this helps people to get the truth & how to resolve ....

@@davidfacciponti8304 obviously late to this party but I’m beyond happy to see someone spill the beans on the FJR high frequency buzz. I sold a ‘98 R1100RT and purchased a new ‘06 FJR without test riding or even seeing it in person; back then they were special order with a $500 deposit. 15 minutes into my ride home I realized I’d made a mistake, it is not for the vibration sensitive. Went after all the usual suspect but never fully fixed the issue, any high speed hi-way runs have my hands numbed out and feeling like 15 pound watermelons. The BMW, with it’s low frequency vibes, was an all day affair with no vibration induced fatigue; testers not mentioning this FJR issue are doing the public a disservice me thinks. I’ve owned over 50 motorcycles in my many years so know of what I speak, it’s not a personal physical thing or riding positioning problem, the FJR just vibrates to the point of hand numbing madness. If Yamaha fixed the high frequency vibes there’d be little reason to buy any other Sport Tourer, the rest of it is that good. I’m looking to finally replace it and tending towards the ‘23 R1250RT, my hands will thank me, the wallet? That’s another story!!

I have a 2011 Yamaha FJR. I like it a lot, but would love to trade up to the 2019 model because mine only has five gears and no electronic cruise control. I took a ride last weekend with a buddy who just bought a new BMW K 1600 Grand America - my ultimate dream bike.

I owned a 2008 RT, sold it after 23K miles then switched to newer Gold Wing. Then got sick of the paved roads near my area so I switched to Super Tenere. I customized that with every option I could think of. Now I am thinking of selling that and getting a KTM 790 for adventure riding and a 2019 FJR for the road. Tenere great but just too heavy to ever feel secure off road with wife and luggage.

So what's the chances of sport tourers making a comeback, what does this bike bring to the market?
@johnc89105 жыл бұрын
Although I own a 2013 FJR, I am not optimistic. The S-T market has always been a niche market. Of the Big 4, Suzuki was never in it and Honda has given up. Of the Europeans, the only major player is BMW. Triumph gave up in 2017. Adventure bikes are now "where it's at". Let's face it. A big ADV bike can do 90% of what an S-T can do. And off the pavement, an FJR is a pig.

I have a 2018 Es bla bla in December. It was this or the r1250rt. I got mine out the door for 18k where the rt was 28k. They has listed it as 18 lol, but it’s inventory and they needed to clear it - 16k. And I found very fine, not vusible scratches from unboxing or something-14k. So I was sold for that price. Shaft drive. Excellent. Led lights will be visibly reflective off signs in the day time. A flicker at night is like a camera flash - they are bright. I got it to 135 in a few seconds. 6 gear is 2500rpm at 70. Extremely quite. It’s a upright sports bike with bags. Without adjustments like risers and a better seat, it’s tough for a 6’ guy after an hour. The engine. It is powerful enough to idle up a very steep hill. The ecu will try to prevent it from stalling. So slow maneuvers with your left hand while you are grabbing jewelry with your right in traffic is doable. It’s nice. It’s not a tourer. It’s not a super comfortable bike. It, it’s cheap. It’s extremely reliable. Besides the first and second service which will cost you a couple grand to tighten the bolts and stuff like that if you take it to the dealer, it’s extremely cheap for maintenance. Essentially just the wearables. I’m sure this bike will last a very long time. I will be getting an RT soon, I just want one so I’ll get it, but it will be probably another two years. I know the fjr will last. It has been my daily commuter in the SF Bay area. About an hour to an hour and a half each way to work during parking lot traffic. It does the job well. The tires on it are OK stock. But I will be replacing mine with Bridgestone’s in a couple months. The windshield and it sucks. Even though it’s highly adjustable, the stock when Sean is shitty and too small and doesn’t like any wind. Although I’m thinking about switching back from my aftermarket since it’s summer time but I think I’ll end up getting a medium size. I got a large touring when shield was totally blocked out all the wind and rain, a little bit too much. My only regret, is Sense8 ended up writing so much, as I just got back into it after 20 years, and they write every day for so long, I wish I would’ve gotten an RT just because of the comfort. But for the price it’s essentially trivial so no regrets. And I know I got a deal probably most people never got with it being brand new and never drove in at all for 14 :)

Im on my 2nd Concours, but i almost bought a 2019 FJR this yr once i heard they added 6th gear to them, i know these bikes are extremely smooth, is what i like about the Kawy's is the bigger bike a bit more power and speed, also cheaper in price, but im not knocking the FJR's, they are definately great quality...

I had a 2012 Connie 14 for four years. I agree it has the better motor and slightly better ride quality with the extra weight, but I'd give the nod to the FJR for the ergos. Even with risers and aftermarket seat, it was still a little too "sporty" a riding position for me on longer trips. The FJR is comfier IMHO.
