Fantastic show again Mike with postcard conditions ! Bravo man ! The ore these ships are carrying is actually taconite which is less than 50% iron ore. They mined out most of true iron ore decades ago. A smart professor at U of MN figured out how to extract the iron ore from the taconite for steel production & to this day the blast furnaces in Gary, Cleveland, etc.. burn on taconite. Also, that section on the bow is called the fo'c's'le. Its' short for "forecastle" if you say it really fast. Growing up boating on the Great Lakes, I love your show !

Unfortunately for the Iron Range and Lakers who haul taconite, the amount shipped has been trending down over the years. A big threat is coming from scrap metals being shipped by rail to new types of steel mills (mini-mills). Also increased completion by aluminum. I'm sure many in this business are concerned about the future.

I spent 5 days up in the Mesabi Iron Ore Range region this past July. Visited many cool places highlighted by the Hull-Rust Mine and the Minnesota Discovery Center located near Hibbing. One of the first things you learn from visiting these two places is the history behind taconite. You learn how mining evolved in the area, and the continual challenges that industry faces. Environmental laws are now tough ongoing issues more than ever. Highly recommend boatnerds try and venture up to the Mesabi Range. It's about an hour north of Duluth.

Only the second livestream I've ever missed as it happens. I sometimes see comments from folks saying they missed a live. Now I know how they feel. Don't like missing them! Hey Mike, missed your live but here we are. You do probably more for. promoting this beautiful port city than all their public relations great diverse vids showcasing great lakes shipping, and fantastic ships them local area, a great entertainment. Waiting for the GR, thinking about christmas dinner. We did nontraditional fare for thanksgiving bar b que steaks and ribs so probably ham for christmas hard to get in the mood snowless and some really nice temps here in the twin cities. I'm not complaining and it really helps to have some calm for all the capt and crews this year. Great vid as usual. We'll all enjoy your efforts stormy or clear.

He often commented how bad the storms on Lake Superior were during the month of November. His ship was held up bound at the Soo the night the Fitz went down. He was happy they didn’t let them go that night. Said it was still one of the roughest storms he’d been in.

Had a few uncles in Herkimer New York ,they worked on the locks. This had been back in the 1960's - 70's. There was a nearby creek and in the winter it got COLD and the ice that formed was impressive.Down here in Orlando, Florida, we are in the upper 70's! Alligators are enjoying the weather! You are correct sir. The Great Republic has 2 conning stations. One forward one aft. Built specifically for trade in the Cuyahoga River. From Lake Erie to the steal mill takes 3-4 hours. If I’m not mistaken she has a stern thruster too.

Hey there Capt.!! Another live that I really enjoyed. The sunset in the background and the Great Republic going out to Lake Superior. It was great all around!!! Being able to chat with Boat Friends from all over the world is always a good time for me. I hope that the JRB will be repaired soon and back out doing what she does best. I never knew the terminology blueberries until recently. Those iron ore pellets. Are actually very heavy. It’s amazing those ships carry a full load of those. I really hope the JRB gets going soon. The York lights are a whole block of neighbors right off of York and Birmingham in st paul. They really go overboard and they have a short range radio transmitter for Xmas music. They typically turn off the lights around 10pm

Hello again, Mike...regarding that fire station of bygone days, I recall back in the early/mid 60s, visiting the dispatcher at that location, and since he operated alone, at the time, they even had a telephone setup, in their restroom! I’ve heard many people that told me that the Great Republic is their favorite. I know why. Think about it, it is the most interesting looking ship out there from a Great Lakes vessel standpoint. Many other vessels look the same. The super structure stands out in a crowd for sure.

They have a process in place for that. The Aerial Lift Bridge goes up early to ensure there are no mechanical issues, the worry is what if a ship is close to the bridge and it stops going up because of an issue? These huge ships take a long time to stop. The ship could crash into it. It’s an incident prevention measure essentially. 👍⛴️

That was very odd. Of all the times that I’ve watched ships I don’t remember never hearing a salute, and then when the ship did it as it started getting further away, the bridge would always return. That was weird.

It’s a city employee so I would have to request that but I know right now they would never do it because I’m a KZbinr, if they allow me to do that, then they would have to allow all of the other people that would request that film or do KZbin. All ocean-going ships operating on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway are required by law to hire a U.S. or Canadian pilot to assist with navigation. However, the actual Great Lakes ships that we see do not need a pilot because their captains are already certified on the Great Lakes.
