Oh shit, I'm an analytical chemist. Excited to hear her story! Just heard her salary. Man I wish Caleb had pointed out that she is incredibly underpaid as a chemist and especially as a chemist in oil and gas. She should lock in a year or so of experience at her current job and then hop for a pay bump, she could easily be at six figures within a couple years.

I really hope she pulls through. This episode was generational poverty in a nutshell. Moving into a sketchy motel, grocery shopping at the dollar store, and letting "but is it all included" stop her from getting a safe place to live. I get it, I was raised lower-middle class and made all the same mistakes my parents did before I started educating myself on finance. I hope she takes this opportunity and runs with it!

You should NEVER live in a motel in midland-odessa. EVER. Those motels are used by the lower rent temporary field crews and roughnecks and washouts of the oilfield, drug dealers (mostly meth and opioids), and prostitutes. There are ok places to live in either town, but it really helps to have friends who've lived here for a while who can tell you where is ok, and there are many. I moved there juuuust shy of a year ago. But to be honest, for someone who wants to be a chemist and be in the oil and gas industry, she should get a job with a service company in Houston, they employ plenty of bench chemists for sample and core analyses. If she wants to do R&D chem the majors and major midstreams have large well funded labs in Houston for that.

Her situation going forward is actually pretty good. She has a strong income with a very high and stable future potential income, has already been making progress cleaning up debts despite only being 2-3 paychecks into this position, and has pretty strong behaviors going, including eliminating an addiction. She is on track to have things totally cleaned up in a matter of months and given her background and attitude she’s going to feel super rich after that. Honestly her biggest challenge will be keeping things responsible when she suddenly has more money than anybody in her family ever has.

When it comes to chemicals, you can’t sit back and let that slide. I work with a lot of chemicals in my job that can really f you up and it’s super important to make sure all of the safety equipment is working well. A lot of times too, if you have a health concern, an employer might ask why you didn’t ask for a hood or proper ventilation or other proper ppe simply because they don’t want to pay your medical bills. I always tell our new people to bring up any and all safety concerns. I even tell them to feel free to call a “stop work” if anything feels off. Better to be safe than dead.

They arnt necessarily any worse than federal so long as you have the financial awareness to understand the terms... unless the feds decide to forgive loans. In my case a fixed low rate (parent co-signed) was a better solution than federal where they pushed a graduated payment schedule... that said I also went through a credit union. Definitely not Fannie mae

Caleb, I like your show and at the same time am grateful the client/guest called you out on some problematic reactions to how she is progressing with her mental health care. When you laughed that she had been off Adderall for one week and she said something about that diminishing the accomplishment -- on the one hand I totally get your reaction, people see being one week removed from a titer of abused substance as, like, "well you're not really off, you're just a relapse away from being back on." But she nevermind deserves credit for seeing the problem, tackling it responsibly with medical support and evaluation, and deciding to take back control. Give her the credit for effort leading up to that one week, don't give her a reason to feel like she's going to fail when she's just started.
