The Star Wars sequels are sadly very, very dumb. Pretty but dumb. And with so much dumb comes so many questions. Questions I’d like answered. The masters of great storytelling JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson have made a mess out of Star Wars. They have contradicted each other and themselves. Who is Finn? Who is Poe? Why is Chewie there? Can we get a satisfying ending and Will Bob Iger let Kathleen Kennedy keep her job?

It doesn’t make sense that Finn is the defected Storm Trooper. His personality is totally contrary to what you’d expect of a person born into bonded slavery. He’s “wacky”, funny, vibrant/clumsy - yet doesn’t possess any particular special skills. It would make more sense for Poe to be a defected Imperial pilot, cool, calm and calculated, with a dry wit, he uses his training skills for the good of the Rebellion.

And to add insult to injury, you can watch 'Attack the Block' and see firsthand that Boyega would have done a pretty good job portraying the kind of person you'd have expected Finn to be. He's tough, brave, and physically formidable, but it's made pretty clear that the life that made him that also fucked with him emotionally. The character isn't even military, yet he acts more like a stormtrooper trained from childhood than Finn does.

@@sigmaK9 i really enjoyed episode 3. It completed a nice story arc about Anakin, what the hell happened to the Republic, and what the heck the clone wars was about. The story even seemed a bit deep, almost a satire, how a few people can manipulate and actually cause the very problems to offer up the "solutions" they were planning for all along. Like Palpatine's "give me emergency powers" moment where he capitalized on everyone's fears for all the crap he was secretly the cause of. Then everyone willingly let their society and rule of laws change, for the worse. Even the jedis lost their way and became suckers, approving an army of clones (viewed as expendable lower class beings) even. Which resulted in a suckier 'new normal' for everyone. "Mission accomplished" for the sithlord. Whereas with the new Disney trilogy... uh, what was the overall story again? I just remember lots of eye candy, cheap nostalgia, and silly gotcha moments that didn't make a great fit for a star wars saga. I actually didn't even watch the third movie, maybe out of protest. Screw Disneycorp.

It's not Abrams fault, they ruined his vision for The movie and decided to go with a version that had more ties to the last Jedi. Of the numerous test screenings, it was the Abrams and Lucas cut that was the most well recieved. It supposedly answered all the questions and had an ending that actually made sense. Kennedy probably did this just to spite him for so many nods to the failure of TLJ which was her baby. She had to keep them in just to tie the plot together in some way, but she ruined the rest of the movie in the process making him look incompetent. Editing can make all the difference in the world in this case.

Death By Design Graphics I think it was JJ’s fault as much as it was Rian’s. I hated TLJ with a passion, but in TROS JJ went out of his way to retcon it and fix its many plot holes (and in doing so, created even more plot holes). For example, instead of making Rey a Palpatine, he could have indeed made her a nobody. Or he could have redeemed Rose, making her a better character, instead of just writing her out of the script entirely. Rian left JJ with nothing at the end of TLJ. But TROS didn’t fix anything; it it fractured the trilogy even more.

FYI, Poe did meet Rey in the Force Awakens novelization. I'm not even joking, there is a scene of them meeting in this officially made CANON book. Then Rian Johnson had them meet again in the Last Jedi. So the CANON novelization wasn't really canon at all. It was canon until it wasn't because the writers of Star Wars don't give a flying feather about history, consistency, and Star Wars lore.

I hate the bombers, especially when they say they want to be historical accurate but historically, the y wing would be used instead Edit: so I would like to elaborate on what I meant, when I mean "historically" I mean in real life, the bombers are clearly inspired by the real life b17 flying fortress, and I like how they did that, the problem is how the execution is and the fact this is really hard to do in real life, level bombers are horrible at hitting ships, you could see an example of like the battle of midway, in which the b17 attacking couldnt hit the surface ships, now the y wing is a torpedo/dive bomber in the star wars universe which will represent the TBD devastator and the and dauntless, back to midway again, these planes were way more effective than the level bombers, they were the ones who took out the ships on midway, even though the TBD decastator planes sucked and didn't hit a target, you get the picture.

Honestly they could have made them tanky as all fuck and still lose, then they could literally have their cake (ww2 bombers) and eat it too (actually make narrative sense)! You get a small corvette like bomber that can take out dozens of tie fighters and a payload that can wipe out a dreadnaught, but its also incredibly slow so there is a logical reason not to use it in some situations. And the first order struggling to take them out with firepower that isnt half a tie fighter, yet still wipe out all but one, would drive the stakes up and make them seem deadly like “wow those bombers can single handedly take out a formation of fighters but the FO still won!” instead you are sitting in the theater either drooling at the impressive visuals or like me, wondering what the fuck these things are supposed to be good at.

It has been an Ewok inside a robot case all the time -Rey sells Millennium Falcon on eBay so she can buy a new lightsaber -Headless force ghost Count Dooku is the main villain -Rose becomes rich and she buys a new flat in Canto Bight -Rey turns Palpatine to the light side so now they can both fight Count Dooku -Rey gets hurt and Palpatine dies because Count Dooku has the high ground -Obi-Wan force ghost appears just to say: "I have a bad feeling about this" -Mando shows up and finally kills Count Dooku with his flamethrower -Baby Yoda appears and heals Rey's wounds Then "Binary Sunset" song is playing. Luke's Jedi robe is flying around in a nostalgic way reaching the final battle scene. Then, End Credits appears. Post Credit Scene: Anakin Skywalker wakes up from his nap. Everything was an horrible nightmare. He is at the Jedi Council Building. Obi-Wan is knocking at his door: "Training time my young padawan!" But Anakin is still on his bed overthinking. He replies: "Yes my master, I will join you later! I have had some weird dreams I would like to share with Master Yoda!" So Obi-Wan goes: "Oh! Allright, I'll see you later in the evening, in the Jedi meeting! May the force be with you!" Then a very worried Anakin RISES from his bed to get dressed and go to speak with Master Yoda immediately about these visions and bad dreams. THE RISE OF THE SKYWALKER (19-12-2019)

I’m happy to say I have officially changed sides. For too long I’ve sided with the sequels. I’ve spent all my time since The Force Awakens trying to convince everyone and to an extent myself that they were good. But I was wrong. So very very wrong. But after seeing the Mandalorian and seeing what we could’ve gotten I couldn’t stand by them anymore. And I am ashamed to have sided with JJ Abrams, Rian Johnson, and the overlord of the death of Star Wars Kathleen Kennedy. I hope I can be welcomed back into the fandom.

It's okay. I was in denial about TFA and Rogue One made me think Disney would do it right. I watched TLJ on opening night and my wife kept asking me why I had a weird expression. I said, "I think I hate this movie. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood." Watched it again and felt genuinely pissed, but thought it would all be made right in Ep. 9. Then I watched Solo. Being in denial can screw your judgment badly.

Abrams doesn't actually think about the follow through of the ideas he sets up, but he was clearly setting him up for a variety of things. Johnson just didn't know what to do with anybody that wasn't Luke, Rey, Snoke and Kylo Ren, because he basically makes him literally repeat the arc he went through a whole week earlier in the timeline. Then by Episode IX, they caved to the fact that China actually is what progressives claim America still is, extremely and horrendously hateful and bigoted towards black people, so he barely even exists in that movie except to scream Rey's name and then mildly hint at him having Force powers, the story arc that Abrams had almost certainly originally intended for him to go on before Johnson said screw it and did literally whatever else he wanted in his movie. Kevin Trevorrow actually had an interesting arc for Finn in his treatment of Episode IX. It would've not only done something with the character's wasted potential that was already set up, but it would've actually given him cool stuff to do that actually has consequences for the plot, namely leading a stormtrooper defection movement in the lower levels or Corascant. We didn't get any of that because Kathleen Kennedy had "creative differences" with Trevorrow, most likely because he insisted on making Luke Skywalker's crazy powerful Force Ghost self an integral role in the plot when she wanted him dead and gone so her new creations wouldn't have to share the limelight. The sequels still wouldn't have been great, but at least Trevorrow's Episode IX would've ended on a relatively satisfying note that actually bekuevably tied all three trilogies together in interesting ways and wouldn't have left the trilogy the creative travesty it is today.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that Poe's jacketless teleportation from the TIE fighter is possibly one of the most concentrated 'He just didn't care' moments for JJ Abrams. The goal was to separate Finn and Poe while giving the former the latter's jacket so he can be recognized by BB-8, and JJ settled for having Poe just to show up later and claim that he was 'thrown from the crash' in a way that left his jacket behind IN THE SHIP. Why didn't they just have Finn and Poe survive the crash together? The whole reason Finn put on Poe's jacket was because it was a substitute or the highly-recognizable stormtrooper armor he was discarding, so...why not just have Poe _give_ him the jacket to wear upon recognizing that Finn basically has the undersuit and little else? It gets the jacket onto Finn, and it helps foster a visible form of camaraderie between them. And then, guess what? _You_ _have_ _an_ _ace_ _pilot_ _to_ _fly_ _the_ _Falcon_ instead of making Rey inexplicably amazing at it. Hell, it would even free her to work more on the mechanical side of things, which is a lot more likely to be her expertise than piloting or shooting. Geez, can we roll back time and have that movie? A Resistance flying ace, a defecting stormtrooper, and a Force-sensitive scavenger sound like they'd have some _amazing_ character interactions. They even fit what you'd expect the bare-minimum for manning the Falcon would be, too: Poe is the pilot, Finn is the gunner, and Rey is the engineer. Characters that _compliment_ one another and grow as people as they also grow closer together. But instead we got the DSW trilogy. Life is full of disappointments, I guess.

My biggest problem with Finn's character was that there was absolutely nothing about him - on any level - that said "trained soldier". Nothing that said "I went through countless drills, war games, mental and emotional conditioning, etc." It only said "I was kidnapped as a child, sat around doing NOTHING till I was in my twenties, then they put a white plastic suit on me, handed me a laser rifle and told me to go be a First Order badass! If you just skipped ahead in Force Awakens, jumping past when he escapes the first order, when they got to him revealing his past to Rey we'd all go "......N-No you're not. No. You're not a storm trooper, you wish you were that skilled" Troopers are an extremely deadly fighting force and are some of the most skilled soldiers in star wars history. Finn couldn't overcome a girl with a stick she didn't know how to use. Finn in the entirety of force awakens is really just an accessory for Rey, not his own character. He's just there to be a comedic relief more than anything, which is fucking stupid cause not only is John a good actor (something this trilogy is frequently short on) his character is full of potential and can be really cool if he's allowed to be. Instead they kill him or at least permanently cripple him in the FIRST MOVIE! That's the only good thing Rian did, retconned Finn getting his fucking SPINE severed by Kylo.

I actually loved the emotional spectrum of Anakin. If you redid the prequels ONLY fixing the dialogue they'd be fantastic. Cause the plot, characters and continuity is actually solid. Palpatine's manipulations of Anakin, especially THAT scene are still really good even as is. People don't like the prequels, and they probably shouldn't the acting is made to suffer too much to really immerse yourself, but they go WAY overboard with why they're bad and spout like "there is NOTHING about the prequels that are GOOD" Though generally even they agree the saber battles are pretty fucking epic. Something I certainly can't say about the sequel trilogy.

I love this analysis of the problems of the Disney Star Wars trilogy. As a screenwriter, one of the biggest flaws the trilogy had was not really giving the audience a thorough, morale, and theological reason/explanation as to why The First Order and The Resistance are fighting in the first place. What moral/ideological differences do they have to make them enemies in the first place? Had the screenwriters had an answer to that question, the trilogy would have had a chance to succeed, along with much, much better character development.

I like the idea of a stormtrooper joining good guys, hated what they did with it and how they executed it. In TFA for example, one of ths things they could have done with him was he could have been was (first and foremost, make him a commando or elite trooper, not some stupid janitor) make him a double agent who gradually breaks his conditioning and turns against the First Order. Poe escapes Kylo, showing his skill, and then takes Finn hostage, forcing him to help. The First Order think Finn turned traitor, Finn would realize this and know that he'd need to prove his loyalty so he plays along after meeting Rey hoping to help the First Order find the Resistance. He builds a bond with Rey but is still the one to reveal Maz's cantina to the First Order. He then sees the First Order (via news video playing at the cantina) blowing up the Republic, then watches Rey get captured and Han and Chewi get beaten (but not killed as they're rescued by Reistance forces) by Phasma. He follows the First Order to Starkiller base and is promoted for his quick thinking and loyalty. But after seeing Kylo mess with Rey he snaps. He then comms the Reistance asking how he could make things right. Han asks him about the station and Finn reveals that with his promotion he can open the shields momentarily so Han can slip in with the Falcon. Finn than rescues Rey and they find Han and Chewie just in time to see kylo kill Han. This would also make Kylo's scream about him being a traitor make sense and his sacrifice in trying to stop Kylo in a duel all the more powerful and meaningful. Then in 8 and 9 he's officially one of the good guys. Sorry for the mini rant but it really gets me how Finn had SO MUCH potential that was utterly wasted.

Kylo is a a practitioner of the dark side and that's it. He belongs to no Sith lineage. Does not adhere to Sith ideals. Has no Sith training. Has no Sith title. He belongs to a parallel and maybe even successor organization called the Knights of Ren. To what extent the ethos of the Knights of Ren mirrors that of the Sith, I couldn't say. Not really sure what the ideology of any of the First Order is tbh. This is true in Disney Canon also, where Kylo is not denoted as a Sith in any of the Disney secondary material. I agree that in many ways he fills the narrative function that the Sith Lords did in the previous six films, but just being an angry dark side user does not a Sith one make.

Yup. They wasted the opportunity to explore his ex-stormtrooper past IN DEPTH, and he also got turned from an active protagonist to a passive protagonist. He does basically nothing in ROS instead of being a companion to Rey and Poe on their McGuffin hunt, but they could have easily written him out of that. Even on the mission, he does nothing special. For example c3p0 does something special because he translates the Sith text, but Finn doesn't do anything like that.

It’s not a lack of remembering, it’s a lack of care and understanding. And this goes for both JJ and Rian. JJ VERY obviously remembers the old Star Wars and plenty about it. He made sure his movie had all the bells and whistles people associated with the classic movies (not the prequels… Abrams clearly viewed those as a mistake in every way, and whether or not you agree with him, running away from the prequels when they were the most recent films before TFA was probably not the smartest idea, especially considering how Clone Wars and looking back on them made people reconsider their quality.), he brought back all the old characters and tech just like it was. But that’s just the thing. Everything is exactly like it was in the Original Trilogy, and thus it creates the ILLUSION that Star Wars is nothing but a cyclical conflict between good light and evil dark with no grey area to speak of that causes events to roughly repeat themselves. This is not what Star Wars is or was. JJ made it that way. Even the OT had morally grey areas. Yes, the Empire was unambiguously bad for most people, but the nature of evil was explored by Empire and RotJ and how it wasn’t simple duality, but choices that led people to become something (highlighted by Luke’s realization that he could become just like his father and that he truly isn’t that different from Darth Vader). And then the prequels took it a step further by showing us an ignorant and self-righteous Jedi Order (ruled from a nearly literal ivory tower) that served a corrupt and ineffective Republic. And then JJ comes along and we’re back to space fascists who take over the galaxy fighting the small and less-equipped rebels. Even the legacy characters, for the most part, are back to where they started (besides Luke since he got basically no characterization other than him leaving everyone to go to the island for some reason). Han and Chewie are back to being smugglers, having lost everything they gained and learned in the OT and after it. And then there’s Rian. To anyone who still claims that Rian understood Luke’s character or Star Wars as a whole, I refer you to this quote from him. He was asked by someone after the movie released if he had considered having Anakin show up as a Force Ghost instead of Yoda. Rian’s response was the following: “Briefly for the tree burning scene, but luke’s relationship was with Vader not really anakin, which seemed like it would complicate things more than that moment allowed. Yoda felt like the more impactful teacher for that moment.” How. Does. Anyone. Who. Watched. The. Movies. See. Them. And. Think. This. Seriously, how the fuck did Rian even watch any of the movies and glean THIS from them?! It’s clear Rian not only does not understand Star Wars, he doesn’t care about it. He even said himself that he doesn’t like world-building or considering anything beyond what he’s making. That is EXTREMELY self-centered thinking to be applying to a franchise that has had stories told in it by so many others. And yet Rian thinks that he of all people somehow deserves special treatment just because he made a live-action movie and derailed the franchise instead of making say, two excellent animated series like Filoni, or an amazing trilogy of books like Timothy Zahn, or even two full trilogies like Lucas. Lucas, even at his lows (looking at you, The Clone Wars Movie), had vision. Rian does not and admits he doesn’t. So remind me why anyone thought it was a good idea for him to make a Star Wars movie, let alone one that needed a sequel?

My biggest problem I have with the sequels is that they just seem so insignificant... The story of the originals and the prequels together seem way more important for all the Galaxy's population. In the sequels it's just this one small group which is in danger, all others don't really matter. The Prequels might not be good movies, but at least watching the Jedi Order fall feels like a big deal...this, on the other hand, doesn't because more Star Destroyers does not mean more epic
