Both of those were accomplishments that absolutely are worthy of recognition/remembrance on their own. Further, I don't have a problem with division banners etc. either; especially for a team like the Braves who won the division a million years in a row. But a fortiori, if a division banner is acceptable, then it surely is also acceptable to hang a banner for one of the greatest seasons in the history of your sport.

The Bulls handle this correctly, or at least handled it correctly. In the same way Alabama, Auburn, and other traditional schools have “claimed” National Championships to go along with consensus National Championships, UCF does too. Heck, if you want a more egregious example from the last decade, Auburn tried to sneakily claim 3 additional National Championships (1913, 1983, and 1993) shortly after losing the 2013 title game to FSU… only to walk it back by claiming they were just pointing out that the NCAA recognizes those teams as National Champions but NOT claiming them… but still keeps them up on the football team’s website under “Champions”.

You're viewing those years through a modern lens when that's all the sport knew at the time. They're actually partly responsible for that change of awarding it after as they were awarded the title by UPI (who was widely recognized at the time same as the AP) before the bowl game and AP had already started awarding it after. Alabama lost to Notre Dame and AP gave it to ND so you had split champions and UPI as a direct result changed it after that game.

The UCF one is a legitimate championship in the NCAA record books though. They went undefeated, got snubbed from the playoff, beat Auburn who beat both teams who played for the National Championship, and ranked number one on the Collie Matrix poll which is a post season poll used to determine champions. Just because you think it's dumb and illegitimate doesn't mean it's invalid. Lots of other college teams have claimed championships that others consider legitimate so why isn't UCF's legitimate? Might get dragged through the mud on this one but I'm tired of all these blue blood college football snobs shitting on UCF because they did everything right to make the playoffs and still got snubbed. You go undefeated in any other sport you get a shot at the playoffs. Why does college football have to be different?

Actually UCF are technically national champions according to the Colley Matrix which is actually legitimate. Oklahoma State and Notre Dame would be champions as well in 2011 and 2012 respectively. The only difference is the UCF claimed their championship. OSU and Notre Dame have it considered unclaimed.
@PaleBlueDot142 жыл бұрын
Yeah but they considered them unclaimed because, as with UCF's "title," the Colley Matrix was the only (legitimate) system that declared OSU or ND champions. All the other rankings gave it to the team that won the championship game. Notre Dame in 2012 is the perfect example of the dichotomy here; Alabama beat them by four scores in the championship game, so is it really fair to say that Notre Dame deserves to claim a "national championship" just because Alabama had a bad night against the Heisman-winning quarterback? Why even have a national championship game institution if it it's irrelevant in who has the right to claim a title? Comparing UCF to OSU - who had a legitimate case that they should've been in the title game but probably would've suffered the same fate as LSU did that year regardless of who they played - and Notre Dame, who got embarrassed, honestly delegitimizes their "claim" in my mind

@@CoolHandLuke813 Remember how in 1990, there were two champions? Colorado and Georgia Tech? AP awarded it to Colorado and Coaches awarded it to Georgia Tech. Those systems are still around to this day along with the college playoffs and the Colley Matrix. The Colley Matrix measures a true championship based off of who was truly the best team that year and the data measured UCF the best team in 2017 believe it or not. Obviously the college playoffs still mean more, but there are still championships given out that the NCAA still recognizes. Even though it's stupid to you, it does not make it illegitimate. So going back to your statement, yes they officially won a National Championship and claimed it.
@CoolHandLuke8132 жыл бұрын
@@jbaskinger41 That’s fine. But back when teams shared national titles, like in 90, 97, and 03, they had different systems and polls acknowledging the champions that were actually well known and renowned by all. You had the AP and coaches and then you had the BCS later on. All of those polls were very well known and were widely accepted as the conventional system at the time. These days, the playoff is all that matters. Almost nobody knows what the Colley Matrix even is. And therefore, the legitimacy of it is thin at best. To say that the Colley Matrix is somehow on the same level as the AP or coaches poll is borderline laughable. But nonetheless, props to UCF for a great season in 2017. They just aren’t the national champions is all. All 4 of the playoffs teams that season played and won against much tougher competition. UCF played one top team. Those other teams played several each.

Banners should correspond to an actual award or trophy given. Winning a conference, tournament, or pennant kind of things. MLB wildcard is weird, and a bit of a stretch for an organization that doesn't have much to hang their hat on. More like trying to stretch accomplishments being the only one in AL East having not won a world series. Also declaring yourself a non-consensus national champion with only a peach bowl trophy is bad.
