Oh my word! My two stories made their way into a KZbin video! I am actually flattered! Lol It's worth mentioning that there was a whole bunch of other stuff that Kathy did during the sessions that I didn't put in the Reddit post, but it's pretty routine as far as these sort of stories go. As for the first story, I did find out that the DM currently has been running games at their house, and is down to pretty much two players. The guy kind of has a reputation for being a total jerk anyway. Also, if anybody wants to know the 3.5 AC 20 thing, kobolds get +1 natural armor, +1 AC because of size, the max dex on a chain shirt is +4 so my dexterity bonus matched up, so 10+1+1+4+4 = 20. Thank you for sharing this, I am hoping that I am not going to have another horror story anytime soon. But if I do, I'll make sure that I message you lol

I hope he get better. There isn’t as many DMs around. It is not a easy job. I hope he improve pass the “dm v.s player” mentality and become a good DM for his players. We dm don’t need to go out of our way to kill our player. We just need to give them a challenge. And that can be done by being smart about things. Good AC - saving throw. Good saves - aggressive gap closer/ambusher. Strong caster- arcane ooze in a orb. Mass Conjugation mage- fireball. Where there is a will, there is a way. And if they keep sticking to the same gimicks, have your BBEG be a actual character and learn to adapt. No one make it to the top of the food chain by being a never changing idiot. So long as you don’t go overboard, (unless you have a spy in their rank to leak their info), player will still feel powerful, but also realize that they have to keep moving and not stagnate on their tactics.

which is why i came up with the ability of "Attuning to the Wilds". When you finish a long rest in a biome you are not attuned to by this effect, you become attuned to it. While you do, you basically get the effects of favorite terrain. While making a survival check to find monster native of this area, you then can "Track" this monster and treat is as your favored beast.

DM Caught Cheating Story. A DM's job is not to win. You are literally the High Potentate, Chief Arbiter, Magical Freaking Marvin of the entire game already. If you find yourself in a game where the DM is trying to beat the Players, leave. That DM doesn't care about you or anyone, and especially doesn't care if you have fun or not. They are a narcissist.

That last story hits close to home. There have been multiple instances in one of my campaigns where my Barbarian could very easily move an object out of the way, but never got the chance to because, and I quote: "that would be too easy, and I want you to get really creative". I can get behind the idea of wanting players to come up with creative solutions to overcome certain obstacles, but bro. It's become a pattern and I genuinely think my DM is afraid to let my Barbarian do anything outside of combat or maybe thinks Barbarians are useless in RP or something because I rarely get addressed at all outside of my turn in combat

Story #1 - I've been in plenty of games where DMs want at least a copy of Character sheets. Plus quite a few where the DM routinely keeps sheets between sessions - less chance of being lost or forgotten that way. But there has always been trust there, which is vital for any game. Kudos to OP, for how he called this person out. 'Jordie' was an abusive lying lowlife, who shouldn't have been allowed anywhere near a game. The non-gaming aspects of his life, I will not speculate on. Story #2 - Kathy needed to go, it was that simple. Story #3 - The DM should have shut Patrick down early, NOT enable him. That he left after one session is a good thing. Story #4 - So, a Player is LEGALLY good at something, so the DM decides that the way to deal with this is to roadblock. Yep, that DM's mindset was horrible. OP's last paragraph has it exactly right, imo.

I have personally done that, checking players inventories to find quest hook items when they leave their sheets behind (because the ones that don't keep them digitally tend to lose them) but I most certainly don't make the adjustments of this guy did. As stated he would erase whole items, but he also used to fudge our stats and then accuse us of cheating. Adversarial DMs are the worst. It is basically bullying. When you have all the power is "winning" that much of an achievement? The people that do this are the same people that abuse and use the SLIGHTEST bit of power they receive to lord it over people. The only way for the players to win in such a situation is not to play. Also any DM that loves TPKs is a bad DM. TPKs should be on the table as a game without a fail state is not much of a game, but a TPK should always be a worst case scenario.

I actually was surprised by this concept. I haven’t run into a DM who has a vs mentality yet. And assumed they didn’t really exist Players with the vs mentality make sense, but DM can literally “rocks fall everyone dies” if they want And the idea he needed to cheat was mind boggling to me. Just plop a team of ancient dragons down if you want to kill them with actual combat. You can always BS that hey stumbled on a social gathering and you interrupted a sacred ritual or something.
4 ай бұрын
@@woodlefoof2, yeah, I've also never encountered that in the wild. Everyone I've ever played with (including myself when I DM) has always understood that the way the DM "wins" is if everyone around the table has a good time. Persuasion Story. This DM appears worried his players might actually win, or at least circumvent some of his encounters. Two things this DM is forgetting is Persuasion is not magic. Even a perfect roll will not always persuade some one to your way of thinking, it just gets the best possible outcome. And secondly, you as a DM should have at least some inkling of what will happen if your party does circumvent your encounter. If you have trouble coming up with stuff on the fly or remembering what will happen in given scenarios, make a flow chart to help you. There are always at least 4 possible outcomes to any combat encounter. Party Wins, Party Loses, Party Avoids, Party Retreats; make some note of general thing that will happen if one of these is met in any way to help keep the flow going. Social Encounters can be similar. NPC's Agree, NPC's Disagree, NPC's Reject, NPC's Negotiate; and make some notes on those. Disagree just means they don't believe you or won't do as you ask, but leave it at that. Reject means they don't believe you or won't do as you ask and are forceful or violent about it, like order you to leave or have you arrested. And Negotiate means they agree, but want something in return for their help or support. Having something ready for these general outcomes helps keep the game flowing and really makes things more fun in the long run.

It is not as easy as you may think to predict people. I had a party who literally took a left turn during my main quest. They were suppose to rescue the prince. Instead they decided to take the prince hostage, and demand ransom from the king for even higher than the previous bandit who kidnap the prince. They then proceeded to go on a wild goose chase with anyone the king send to hunt them down.
@davidtherwhanger6795
@davidtherwhanger6795 8 ай бұрын
@@mingchen7704 I'm talking general outcomes of encounters during a quest. Your talking your players changing the quest. Two different things. If your players are going to change the entirety of the quest on the spur of the moment, you might have to take a break or call the session to adjust everything going forward as every faction's goal in the quest has now changed. You see the outcome here is not an outcome of the Encounter Rescue. It is the Party changing the Deal. Those outcomes for the Rescue Encounter were, The Party Rescues the Prince, The Party Fails to Rescue the Prince, The Party Escapes with the Prince, The Prince is killed in the Attempt. What you have described is after the encounter result has already happened. Even if it was thought of and plotted before or during the Rescue Encounter, it won't change anything until after the Rescue Encounter is already resolved and the Party does have the Prince.

@@davidtherwhanger6795 see, the issue is, it’s rarely the “big picture” that end up being the issue. But rather how smaller things can derail the whole thing. I’m not trying to defend him. But I am saying that it takes more improve skill than many may think to run a campaign that is more than 3 sessions long. (Nothing usually get off track too much in session 1, 2 is when you see seeds but can usually help course correct. But third, they been in the world for too long, and has gain sentient and is running off to chase some random street cat, convinced it was actually professor McGonagall because it looked at them for more than 2 seconds the previous session, and they are seeing it again, “it must be important to the story!!!!”)
@davidtherwhanger6795
@davidtherwhanger6795 8 ай бұрын
@@mingchen7704 It never crossed my mind you were trying to defend anyone. You give another example of your party completely changing the quest or campaign as why general outcomes cannot be made for a single encounter in that campaign. Let me give you an example. Your party is travelling on a road when Bandits attack. Some possible outcomes are the Party Wins, the Party Loses, the Party Retreats, the Party Avoids the Fight. Any of these will require some tailoring to the specific situation. But you can already have some idea of what you are going to do as a DM if one of these outcomes does happen. Instead of waiting on any outcome and then having your party sit there at the table as you try to figure out what is next. Not every DM can think that fast on the fly for any and all possible outcomes. Having some of the possible outcomes, and some of the most likely outcomes, already thought about some can help them keep the pace going.

@@davidtherwhanger6795 alright, let’s me put that into perspective. Here is how that could also spiral into unpredictable way. Bard say “daddy? I’m your long lost son. Roll high on bluff” - now what? You sudden go from combat to RP. Even if it does go down the “they win path” the rogue “now we proved ourself, take us to your leader, we want to join” - once again, Combat turn RP. Or “P W” and one of the party goes “where is your hide out, we want all your shit” suddenly you now has to pull a much bigger combat out somewhere. Or “P W” but only barely. And suddenly one of them go “we seem a bit under level, if those scrub almost killed us. Let’s go grind some more level” Or if something in the combat happens like poison, wild magic, or any number of other thing happens. Suddenly a new side question icon pops up out of nowhere. And all that from a random road encounter, now imagine if you are in a dungeon, or town, or any other more complex situation. Trust me, I tried to use a flow chart once. It lasted 2 session before the range decided to start a bar fight, and knocked out a noble, while the rogue picked a fight with the assassin’s guild due to being mistaken for killing one of their agent. And also, our halfling bard suddenly decided that he want to disguise as a child, convince the local shop keep he was his son from a mistress, just so he can drive the shopkeep and his wife apart, because then he can wiggle his way into seducing the daughter, while the parent are fighting. (P.s it didn’t work out, because I rolled for his disguise, and he got a 2. He was discovered, and Ban from the shop)

The game master's job is to remove such players from the game if they don't follow the rules of the table, it's as simple as that. "Do you want to play by the rules?" So if the DM can't say "no" he's not fit for the job, but if he does he's just as terrible because he doesn't allow Players to play... Which one is it now? That las DM pissed me off nearly as much as the first one. It is part of the reason why D&D is a cooperative game. People have roles in the party and sometimes succeeding easily is part of the up and the downs of the game. You might as well take away the rogue's ability to stealth and pick locks, or the fighter's ability to use weapons, or the wizard's ability to know about magic, or the barbarian's toughness. It's a bad attitude and it's borderline adversarial. Let the bard talk, but also hit them with Wisdom saves or force them into melee sometimes. Yes, it's true we can't learn social stuff by osmosis, or witchcraft, or however allistic people do it, but we can learn if people explain. 'Kathy' probably could too if she wanted to and the things she did were likely for exactly the reasons that many allistic people do them (we've heard plenty of icky stuff like this on this and other RPG Horror Story channels): Because she could. I suspect Kathy has received most of what she knows about TTRPGs from memes and she's disappointed that OP's game wasn't like she'd convinced herself it would be. last Story: Time to bail, OP. As someone who has been stuck in forever DM status for a long time, I really have to ask why. The DM is allowed to "cheat" in any number of ways that don't directly interfere with the players' characters. The screen the DM has will all the quick reference info on it? The real reason it's there is so the DM can lie about their rolls. You're literally allowed to modify monsters in any way you need/want to for the sake of your game. But my mentality is that the DM's responsibility is making sure everyone else is having fun, not crushing them or having the seemingly all to common "players vs. DM" mentality. Most of my fun comes from watching them overthink a relatively simple puzzle I've put in front of them. Hell, the last campaign we played for a long time, I barely even used official materials. Basically wrote up a long outline that I based on the story of Gloryhammer's music albums, which none of my players had listened to before, so had great delight when upon reaching what they thought was the end of the story turned out to only be the end of act 1, as they and the villain were all frozen in ice for a thousand years, to then be freed in the future and we got into the really weird stuff, namely the villain summoning an elder god that would devour the entire galaxy, chasing him across multiple planets, and an invading goblin horde from another galaxy that were basically 40k orcs. And that was just act 2, because then the time travel shit started. One of my favorite descriptions, upon arriving in the past, a thousand years before the events of act 1 and finding the villain already in control of the world, and I directly quoted the lyrics of the song "Siege of Dunkeld" to set the stage: "You have returned from the future into a terrible past, chaos and evil surrounding the ancient fortress of Dunkeld, the armies of darkness amassed. Have you arrived in a twisted dimension, or is it true reality? The banner of Chaos is flying alongside the corrupted crest of Dundee. Great scars split the plains, horrifying fecal demons rising up out of the caverns below, and dark robotic astral zombies are eating the peasants in the surrounding town of Glascow. Siege engines of Hell's creation are blasting the walls with unholy fire, and atop a great black throne carried on the backs of his minions, Zargothrax sits, leading his army of evil so tragic and dire."

Throwing something with force at someone, whether it hurts someone or not, is assault. DM doesn’t know how to control their temper, and the OP could have easily called the cops on them. Also who the hell throws a book or the PHB at someone?!

Nothing like some Simba to start off the cringe. The DM in the first story is just a jagoff and people need to stop playing with him. Don't cheat your players.

One thing I’m wondering about story 1 How did the player get 20AC as a kolbold sorcerer? Only way I could think of is at minimum 8th level character with the lightly armorer and moderately armored feats to gain medium armor proficiency. Chain shirt (13+2Dex Max) AC only comes out to 15. I guess he would have it at 20 with the shield spell if he was spamming that every chance he got.

I understand being autistic but I think that Kathy might have other issues that she needs to deal with. This kind of obsession with horror like that to where she can’t leave it out of regular activities is indicative of a type of dissociative disorder.

Story 2 hoenslty feels fake as fuck, but it wouldnt shock me if the woman had issues or was trolling. Honestly the reason it makes me think its fake is due to how long it took to kick someone after they did that much BS in a single session.

honestly id say its real solely because of how long it took. ive heard enough horror stories to know that A LOT of problem players are either only shut down way too late or never at all for one reason or another

There are huge numbers of stories where GMs and/or players suffer through awful behaviour for a long time; there's nothing unbelievable about it. People do so IRL as well on a frequent basis. The Venn diagram of people who are conflict averse for various reasons and people who play TTRPGs has a huge amount of overlap.

Being really good at persuasion shouldn't break the game. Shouldn't be a problem. Think DM is misunderstanding it. Thinking of persuasion as mind control.

Not really Question mark and if not your character sheet comma it's a copy of your character sheet period Which makes sense because believe it or not some players do cheat period Most DMs Want to know What their players levels are so they can balance the game properly

What do people still think "you can do anything in DnD" is a thing? It's an game with rules and dice. Do this people think dnd is children play pretend on the playground.

Memes, probably. If you read a bunch of D&D memes and that was the only thing you did, you'd have a very skewed idea of the game and some people do not have great critical thinking skills while others want the memes to be a true representation of the game because that's what they call fun.

What kind of Dnd memes did Kathy and Patrick read? I read several and none were about casual murder, skinning and/or eating other sapien beings. I mean I find out about dnd through memes like some people have found different fandoms.

@rynowatcher
@rynowatcher 8 ай бұрын
First one: a photo copy of a sheet taken in private really does not prove the original sheet was changed. OP could make a second sheet and copy that or copy the original and make changes themselves before turning it in. The dm might be "fixing" the sheet if they have home rules or setting rules; ie, you cannot get a chain shirt, we are playing Dark Sun or if they are starting in a rural village with less resources. Maybe op copied starting money wrong? Why prevent a player from getting something they can afford in a long term campaign? This seems like an intrapment situation if op knew the gm would change something. Smells off to me.
