Brother, even though its years later, it crashed because you paused the mission. Once you paused, you can see it left the track, but you didn't see it in that Maui sun (I guess). But it just continued straight after you paused it and by the time you started turning, it was already in the trees. A good lesson and great review as usual. Mahalo

Sounds right. Good observation 🍻
@cow19698 жыл бұрын
Looks like crash was due to operator error. When you hit "pause" on the pre-planned flight, it simply continued flying in the direction and altitude when paused (it was off-track from planned flight path). You should have either taken control immediately or manually put it into hover mode.

The flight characteristics, 1080p/30 camera and foam construction all screams a $300 drone, not $1300.

John Lipski Well the Technik is quite impressive. but yeah 1300 is Way to much.
@ThornyPlatypus8 жыл бұрын
+mPky1 Thanks for your reply, I learned a bit there. I was going for an offhand remark and simply took off the "1" from the $1300 price to arrive at $300. I was just trying to say that the disco feels like a very overpriced item to me. Let me explain where I'm coming from with my original comment...I'm not a drone guy, I'm a video and photo guy. Drones are a tool to me, not unlike a tripod or a light kit. I tend to compare these things at face value, out of the box, based on what they will do for me from a purely functional perspective. As such, I cannot help but compare what you get with the Disco as opposed to something else in this ~$1300 range, such as the DJI Phantom 4. For my purposes, the Phantom gives me a lot more for my money. The Disco does for me, functionality-wise, about the same as what a Parrot Bebop does for around $400 (yes, I'm aware of the signal range discrepancy between those two, still not sure it's worth that much more money...to me). I personally wouldn't spend that much on something made out of styrofoam parts on principle, but I guess based on my initial statement, I might spend a few hundred, if it at least did better than 1080p video.
@joshuamanring27068 жыл бұрын
And you're not going to get HD FPV without a $300+ Tx Rx setup. Not to mention the OSD. Foam is a common material used for pro grade mapping drones that cost much more than this.

Personally I think the crash was pilot error, you could see it was moving off track way back, you just did not react. Also how can you push a button, not knowing what it does. Maybe that pause button was too get out of GPS ?
@DustinDunnill8 жыл бұрын
+Ruudy L I'd have to probably agree with you. While I was editing and saw the whole picture it did cross my mind. I'd I had manually controlled it sooner I'm sure I could have avoided the crash..but I'm kind of glad it did crash and we all saw how it held up.
@RuudyL8 жыл бұрын
So what does the pause button do, should it start circling. in the spot where it was when you pushed it ? Also saw when it collided with a Phantom and lost a wing at high altitude, and it had a few scuff marks, slid the wing on and continued flying, very durable. Only things I do not like about it is the Wifi, that should be 5.8Mh and that Tablet over your controles. Think there will be a upgraded version soon with better antennas too, will wait for that :-)
@RobinMalmberg728 жыл бұрын
The pause button on flightplan will for my parrot bebop which uses the same app just stops the flightplan. For a bebop drone it stays in the same place. For a plane the same action would be to fly straight ahead. And that was exactly what it did. I think it was pilot error and that it didn´t loose GPS at all. If it looses GPS it will be very easy to see in the flight academy history as well. But a very nice flight and demonstration of it.
@DustinDunnill8 жыл бұрын
+Robin Malmberg Thanks. And sounds right. Maybe PARROT should make DISCO do a tight loiter circle when pause or stop is pressed to prevent this type of crash instance IMO

Yes, I think they should. Tell the parrot support that, they are really good. If you tell them I think the feature will come in a new version of the software. @caltain8 жыл бұрын
First off, great video! As for the crash and its causes, I have a pretty good guess about what happened, though I'm only guessing and have no experience whatsoever with the Disco. From what I could see on the screen, the problem happened when you paused your flight plan. From that point it basically continued straight and started bypassing waypoints. From what I recall of the audio I don't remember hearing that you ever actually resumed the flight plan by tapping play again. Since you also didn't provide any stick and rudder input, it just flew straight. When it bypassed the terminal point of the flight plan and you, ground level quickly rose to the point where the trees obscured the Wi-Fi signal. It then initiated a right turn Return To Home, but not before the upper portions of the tree canopy rose to flight level. At that point you attempted to climb up by manually applying back stick. Unfortunately, because Wi-Fi communication was down your manual input had no effect and that nasty tree swatted your pretty toy out of the sky. Besides the loss of signal, this is one of the classic problems with automated flight in the absence of environmental sensors. It appears that the Disco's flight control software flies relative to its starting home location, including its originating elevation, and does not take terrain into account. That also explains how you are able to achieve an apparent altitude of 500 to 600 m above ground level by launching at high elevation and flying over the descending terrain. At any rate, that's my deconstruction of what happened on the flight. I could be completely wrong on any or every point, but I offer it for what it's worth in helping to explain the crash. I did notice one comment about breathing on the mic. You can eliminate that by moving it to a position about 1 inch directly to the left or right outside of the corner of your mouth and no further in the direction you are facing then the forward most portion of your lips. That will let it clearly pick up your voice at low gain levels while keeping the mic well outside of the flow of air from either your mouth or nose. Just my two cents. Your actual mileage may vary. Objects in mirror are closer than they appear. Do not eat.
@DustinDunnill8 жыл бұрын
+caltain Great analysis :). I believe your mostly spot on. When I pushed pause it would not allow me to resume as the buttons were grayed out and I tried pressing them. The aircraft does not have any terrain elevation reference and only accounts for the launch point altitude and the ground sensors which only work at 30 or so feet above ground. I don't believe it went into RTH at the last moment but it did respond to manual input as seen before it crashed. I tried to pull up too late and the climb rate was not steep enough to get out of the trees. I think it would be best for the software to initiate a loiter wherever pause is pushed and perhaps a loiter or RTH when stop is pushed during waypoint missions. In parrot's manual it does state to plan and execute your waypoint mission from the ground but I did it while loitering in flight so perhaps that also caused some issues :)

For what this cost, it's overall size when the wings are even taken off and trying to transport it, the limited range value, and the overall size of the controller setup, it seems clear a DJI Mavic is a much better value. Also if the proposed, EASA regulations, in the EU go into affect, Parrot (a French co.) is pretty much toast selling this product. Of course the Mavic would have a similar dilemma as well. :-(

Brian Bunce that's old news.DJI have stepped up in the customer service.They regularly honour the warranty now. what do you mean post production problems? That's pretty vague.You mean spare parts ? QC ? The Mavic can be bought normally .It will soon be available on most markets ...and the price is pretty good too.Unless you compare it to cheap knockoffs then ofcourse it looks like it isn't available for mass market. But that's not a good criterion I think. for all the shit DJI pulled they made some very good moves in the last two years.
@BrianSmith-yq7ys8 жыл бұрын

You had mentioned that when it went into "return to home" mode that it started steering for the mountains. Basically the wrong way. If you point your finger North, and walk east, your still pointing your finger north. most of the cheaper models dont have a very good GPS. as i say "pointing north walking east". The wind will push you. Its called CROSSTRACKING. The GPS in the Parrot products could be used to navigate a cruise ship with the type of GPS and crosstrack directional re-mapping. Its a great feature. Plus its instantanious. The GPS capabilities in DJI products give it a 30% margin for error.

So after watching all your vids on the Parrot Disco fpv what is your final verdict? Is it a real usable drone, and do you have to purchase apps so you can use map mode shown or maps themselves? Or can you just download maps to the free app? This is the confusion factor I see with Disco. Other than that it seems to be a good unit other than a lot of kickback I have heard that the repair or help service sucks. I find that with all drones. I am looking to add a flying wing to my collection. I am a big yuneec fan own them all and very happy with them. Thanks for you vids and any comments would be appreciated.

I think you exceeded the FAA max altitude of 121m (400ft) quite a bit of the time during your flight. I'm surprised it let you fly that high without giving you an on screen warning. I can see some uses for this for, say, farmers who want to cruise their acreage for inspection purposes, but with a range of less than a mile, it might not cut it for large farms. When you did your flight plan, there should be an option as to what the craft is suppose to do when it finishes: loiter, land or something .. which would have likely prevented you flying into the trees. The 'auto land' function was (as SeBy DocKy would say) "Not Amazing". Overall, an interesting review .. thanks for sharing. Mahalo ...

That makes the Disco a "truly" autonomous "DRONE". It can loiter, change altitude, to get a closer look, and take pictures at every way point as pre-programed, then return home without any operator input. OUTSTANDING!
@davefolts15668 жыл бұрын
DBS MODS has been able to get out past VLOS with a powerful signal, so the key is keeping the antenna pointed at the Disco. I did some experimenting with mine in the yard and when pointed away from the Disco, you can see signal drop once you are out about 20-30 meters...otherwise its rock steady and I reckon the 2km range in free space away from houses is attainable.

Also larger batteries have been mounted with some cutting out of the battery cutout. I read somewhere that flight time increased to over sixty minutes.

Dustin: It looked like the waypoints canceled when you pushed PAUSE. The track looked like it deviated off coerce. It started flying straight at the 11th way point. It flew to the right and past the final weigh point. It looked like it was descending as it passed the home point. That seemed to be why it hit the trees. Marvelous video. ;-)

+Don Fish Jr. (The Flying Fish) probably pilot error yes. Glad to see how it held up in the crash though.

Dustin: A part of the learning curve! Now you know not to do that again. Glad the wing suffered minimal damage. Demunseed landed his on a street head on into a curb. Screwed up the camera focus and scratched up the lens. There should be a guard to protect the nose mounted camera. May be a 3/8" eyebrow protruding above the 1/8" protruding lens! ;-)
@DustinDunnill8 жыл бұрын
+Don Fish Jr. (The Flying Fish) yikes, grass or some sort of net (unless hand catch skill is acquired) are the only ways I would land it. I think a guard may interfere with the fisheye unfortunately otherwise it seems they would have implemented it.

HI, I found that flight amazing,,, New tek. way back when I flew R/C Aircraft on 27.095 & 72.069 those days u r range was as far as u can see it with no return too home or u returned home with just the X-MATTER only,,,XXX

I believe what happened to cause the crash, from what I saw on the map screen is the minute you hit that pause button to see what it would do, you can see that it stayed going straight from that point on and not going to the next waypoints. Makes me believe that the pause button pauses it's current mission plan and it holds the heading it last held at the point of pause, and you just missed it because of the small screen and glare, plus it wasn't that far off the route you set so it may have gone unnoticed until Boom. Maybe they put that in there incase you have set up a route that you thought would get you to the footage you wanted, but realize the waypoint wasn't quite right, you can pause the path it was programmed to follow so it stays on the course you realize you want. Don't know a damn thing. Just my guess. I don't even know what my own drone does when I hit pause because I haven't used it yet. I'd love to hear if you find out.

just off the top of the head... I think it would be cool if you set up a portable soccer net, or any kind of net to land in areas where you don't have grass. Do you think that would work?
@DustinDunnill8 жыл бұрын
I do think that is an option if it was soft enough not to break the wings.

This cannot really be compared to a multirotor drone. This will give you much more flight time and is a different plane design it just depends if you want it for better video or longer flights.

I’m seriously thinking about getting one. They were £1300 which is a joke price for a polystyrene aircraft with WiFi connection and 1080 res. However you can pick them up at £350 now, which is much more like it and very tempting....
