TKO593 what!!??? Where do you fly your mavic? Fly it any further than its max range and you would run out of battery
@TKO5936 жыл бұрын
Daniel harman The battery life usually has to include a trip back, but if you have a way to induction charge the Mavic on some sort of heli pad then I could set up a long flight. Also people have modded the Mavic with bigger batteries.

for anyone who wants to do the mod as well: *CHECK YOUR 4G NETWORK COVERAGE!* I am very happy with my Disco and wanted to do the same mod so I got a 8GB flat only to find out that here in germany there is almost no connection good enough except from the city surroundings, where I'm not allowed to fly anyways. Now I spent a shit ton of money for an 8GB flat and cant even use it. So again my advise is: Check if the country you wanna fly in got a good 4g network coverage!

Whoa Dustin! Dude, this is freakin cool! Just dissappointed in the choppy video. How many reception bars did you have on your phone? Did you have the FPV video set on 720 or 480? Also wondering if you checked your data usage just before and right after the flight to determine the amount of data used...?
@DustinDunnill6 жыл бұрын
I had 3 to 4 bars but certain areas the disco flew here had the lowest 4g coverage on the TMobile coverage map so that may have something to do with video. I didn't check what res I was in for FPV but pretty sure 720. I believe that flight used around 500MB when I looked at the data but record is unavailable while billing cycle is processing so I'll look later.
@whsbluesjam36736 жыл бұрын
Not sure about this on your phone but on my Samsung S9+ I can monitor the data usage in real time. I often tether my phone to my laptop when needed for my job when I'm on the road. I just check the data usage before and after. Since my data usage is monitored right on the phone, I don't have to wait for a billing cycle to figure it out. There might even be an app available for phones that don't have this feature. This mod is totally cool and so inexpensive but I think it is better suited for those with unlimited data plans. :-)

I dont quite understand,,even with the Zerotier software installed how the controller is routing through the 'cellular' network,,,to stay in contact with the DISCO? Kind of picture the Zerotier virtual nics are making a 'round robbin' effect,,,from wifi,,,to LTE network,,but dont quite understand 'the workflow'. Am showing my stupidty it goes without saying.

This would work great to use with my plan. I have 2 hotspots i have through AT&T with unlimited LTE data. In most locations i get a constant 25-30MB download and 10-15mb upload with 45-50ms during the day and between 50 to 90MB down 20-30mb up with under 35ms at night. Each sim cost only 29.95 a month. I've had the plans for a year for one and 9 months for the other. The most data I've used in a single month was 1.21TB of data. It never slows down or throttles and I've never been charged more then the 30 bucks each. I can also use the sim cards in my laptop with LTE my phone and the hotspots. I'd love to do something like this. Thanks for the video. Also let me know if you'd like info on how to get the plan. It was a pain to figure out but once i figured it out takes 5 minutes. Just gotta stop by any AT&T store and pick up a sim card. Then activate it. Also don't know if this matters but i live in Utah. But works the same from Vegas or Portland all the places I've tried it.

great video dustin, im wondering if your android phone has power setting or performance mode im not sure if it would make the 4g on your fone stronger or perform to the max but saying that, your already getting a good range with the battery you have and no loss of control connection so seems its working great. as always its a thumbs up on this video and a great review. i look forward to the next video
@DustinDunnill6 жыл бұрын
That might be something to look into to boost 4g. The video uses about 95% of the bandwith.

Appears as if the GPS display shows COG (course over ground) rather than HDG (heading). The leeway of the wind is the cause of the difference between heading and ground track. If return to home mode was based on heading you’d end up with a curved actual track over the ground if there was a side wind. Just a guess though.

A big wow ! This is the future of drone long range. It is the commercial none line of sight control version. On MIL drones they use Satcom . I am sure it can be implemented on DJI products as well somehow

How much data does a flight use if your controlling it and streaming the video? Trying to price out plans but don't know how much data to shoot for. Thanks! Keep up the good work

Around 1GB per hour 👍

Great video! 2gb of 4g is kinda less. In India 2gb per day for 2 months costs like 6-7$

I wonder if it can or if there is a way to have the disco fly and land to one location and then someone at that location relaunch it to return home using this mod... Like a long distance game of disco catch.
@DustinDunnill6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. It would be no problem at all 👍
@Raptor50aus6 жыл бұрын
Excellent Dustin. I just picked up a new Disco from local store for $469 AUS this week so will have to try this mod :)
@DustinDunnill6 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Have fun. Remember to give yourself more space than you think you'll need till you get the hang of the landings 👍
@Raptor50aus6 жыл бұрын
I have already flown the disco before Not hard to land I’m aver experienced rc pilot :)
@Raptor50aus6 жыл бұрын
Are you pressing the land button when close to landing ? It will reverse the prop to slow it
@DustinDunnill6 жыл бұрын
I do sometimes but also like to just manually land

Did you ever recover that one you lost on that long over-ocean flight?

Never did

To save on data, there should be a system that lowers the video frame rate as a function of altitude, speed and orientation change. Sometimes 2 FPS is acceptable when cruising straight at high altitude.
@DustinDunnill6 жыл бұрын
Good idea. You can also mod the bit rate of the video with a hack but it's not variable. You can only set one rate.

Does the connection go trough a server before you get it to your phone?
@DustinDunnill6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's going through zerotier VPN to manage the connection
@MarcBuehler6 жыл бұрын
LordGryllwotth only if it can‘t find a direct connection, see also uavpal.com/disco/faq#indirectconnection I assume Dustin‘s connection was relayed (not direct), as the videos seems quite choppy. Usually it‘s smoother, but depends on the carrier‘s coverage as well. If you‘re concerned about the privacy, the stream between the controller and the disco is end-to-end encrypted (regardless whether or not it‘s relayed)

Can this mode be used without the skycontroller?. I mean, using only the cell phone as a controller, Is that possible?. Thanks
@DustinDunnill6 жыл бұрын
Needs the sky controller 2 as far as I know 👍

Do you think this would work with an iphone? (Assuming I have the right cable connection) A setup video for the 4G mod would be super helpful

Yes, phone doesn't matter.

Can you switch back to WiFi when you know it is in Loiter above you? That would make for a safer landing?
@DustinDunnill6 жыл бұрын
Yes but it will do a circle landing automatically if it takes too long to reconnect when over home point so I'd advise just staying in 4g or switch back to WiFi further out to give it time to connect prior to hitting home point 👍
@esuohdica6 жыл бұрын
Yeah good point, I didn't think of that! I'm collecting the hardware to mod mine at the moment and I like the way i can still fly wifi, or fly with the 4G mod when i choose to. Thanks for all of your useful videos, you have some stunning scenery out there! I'm flying in the north of the UK, so mostly between the rain showers!

Next step? Attach solar panels on the wings and fly forever.

TomXygen And then it gets night 😂😂😂
@eraldorh6 жыл бұрын
You couldnt put big enough solar panels on a device that small to do anything like that.
@DustinDunnill6 жыл бұрын
It might give the battery a little extra charge but not much
@MichaelNeese6 жыл бұрын
I'd be concerned about the weight between the panels and the glue to carve them into the wings. I'm not sure the minor gain in charge would justify the weight. Then there's the flight characteristics. Even a couple of millimeters out of balance, that far out from the center if mass, and the software would go nuts trying compensate. It would probably be a disaster.
@tomxygen59636 жыл бұрын
being in the center of mass wouldn't be a major concern since the gyros are working to compensate. My major concern is about the weight.
