Hi Sir, the VQ37 does not have variable timing on exhaust side. I've asked multiple tuners and VQ engine builders as well.

The best thing to do with an HR is combined the two! VHR bottom end with stronger rods and pistons and HR heads with cams, add some boost and you have an animal of an engine!

Just for info, coming from someone with experience with the VQ platform and having swapped an HR into a DE platform I can confidently say that DE to HR is relatively easy, however a DE to a VHR is a lot more of a challenge. I own a 2004 350Z and a 2014 Q60S . Both have 6 speed manual transmissions. I can tell from experience that my old 350Z has a LOT more bottom end torque then my newer Infiniti. But, the Infiniti's 3.7l engine winds up a bit higher and has a bit more power at the top of the RPM curve where as my older 3.5l seems to develop it's top hp at much lower RPM. Basically, I can get a strong pull from the old 350Z at as little as 1800 rpm where as my newer Infiniti's 3.7l engine does not start to pull strong until at least 3000 rpm. As for acceleration, the 2014 Infiniti I have accelerates to 60 at the exact same time as my old 2004 Nissan 350Z. Of course, the Q60S outweighs the old Z by over 500 lbs. Gearing is the same. By this I mean the cars run the exact same road speed at the same RPM. Advertised HP for the two cars is 287 for the Z and 330 for the Q60S. Both engines run very smooth and neither uses oil. The one thing the 3.7L does not do that the 3.5L does is that start up rattle of the timing chain. The old 3.5L engine will give you this fraction of a second timing chain rattle at start up where as the 3.7L in the Infiniti is dead quiet at start up. So, Nissan must have done something to that chain tensioning system in the newer 3.7l engine.

to be honest a lot of the reason why higher RPM's don't feel/sound right in the 370z is that the default tuning and VVEL system are really poorly done for high performance and sacrifice a lot of what you want at high RPM's for better efficiency/fuel economy at the low end. Can you put the VQ37VHR crank in a VQ35HR and have a custom piston made with a higher pin height and end up with a VQ35HR stroker? Or alternatively, just swap out the VQ35HR short block for a VQ37VHR and achieve the same thing.

There is 0 debate, the VVL technology and the bigger motor from the VHR is far more advance in producing power with efficiency. I wouldn't even buy a HR motor for any price.
@55Berg4 жыл бұрын
Well I can already tell your biased cause you have a 370z. But the differences between these engines are very minimal. The vq35hr is an amazing V6 and barely any different then the 37.
@firebreather3604 жыл бұрын
The video literally says they're the same motor on the bottom end. The bore is the exact same. The only difference is the increase in stroke. VVL is nice but it's not a make it or break it technology. To further prove a point, quarter-mile times and street race videos (even though you can't always go off of these) all show that the speed difference is usually focussed around driver mod or tuner experience. Considering you can get a 350Z HR for around $6000-$10,000, and the 370Z is usually $10,000-$20,000 (for one that's NOT brand new from the lot), I would say the choice is easy. Plus the 370Z interior is ugly XD

block is also machined different so that its more stable at higher RPMS and can handle more force and vibrations since it has oil passages around the cylinders instead of them being completely disconnected from the rest of the block (forgot the real terms for them lol) as well as other design features that improve performance. probably also has lighter weight and stronger crankshaft, pistons, and con rods so that it gets better throttle response and higher RPM. and some higher airflow design. IIRC the V angle is pretty different aswell. along with being twin turbocharged of course, which is the main performance gain along with the very slightly increased displacement. Nissan goes up and above with all of their GT-R drivetrain elements, like the dual clutching automanual tranny.

I know this video is old and there is probably an answer to my question somewhere but it doesnt hurt to ask this question as often as possible. I have an 06 350z enthusiast with the rev up de motor. If i plan to do only minor n/a upgraades and keep up with maintenance, do i really need to worry about my car blowing up? I want to push the performance of this car but I'm scared to because i see it all the time that my engine i garbage, cant hold power, blah blah blah. I have 3 inch y pipe open back to a greddy single, short ram intake and plenum spacer. Do i need to worry about my car detonating with minor upgrades if i push it to redline for extended periods of time? Its a drift build so redline is unavoidable.
@tksperformance8789 Жыл бұрын
I'm sure you've gotten some answers somewhere but everybody has different opinions so I'll offer a couple of mine from experience. 1. Run synthetic oil 1 or 2 grades thicker if you're beating on an engine. Oil as thin as water is for fuel efficiency and less drag on internal parts, NOT longevity. When race teams could qualify with a different engine than they raced with they'd sacrifice the qualifying engine with thin oil for a few more hp at the expense of the engine for a better start position. I run 15w40 in my turbo VQ37HR. 2. Don't beat on the engine until the engine oil is up to operating temperature. Get an oil temp gauge. 3. Especially on these cars, watch that the engine oil doesn't overheat during competition. Get an oil cooler and use an expansion style thermostatic valve to regulate flow to the cooler, some cooler kits come with one. Oil normally runs much hotter than coolant but keep it under 280°. 4. If you're constantly at redline, consider an oil pump with a billet steel gear set. At least you have a revup to begin with, they've got better pumps than the regular DEs. 5. Put an aluminum tank radiator in with new OEM fan motors (they're better than most aftermarket performance marketed fans). And when your done with a bracket or heat, or whatever it's called in drifting, let it idle for 5 min so that the fluid temps equalize before shutting it down. Take care, good luck
@brandondeel3567 Жыл бұрын
@@tksperformance8789 man I appreciate the info, thats actually very helpful! I've had the car a little longer and have learned a few things for sure. I do run 15w40 in it now but a big thing I learned about this particular car is that one of the previous owners swapped in the 03-05 de motor so I don't have the rev up. Also found out it has a few engine mods I didn't know about at the time. Has a plenum spacer and throttle body spacer. So this engine has oil pump issues? Is there anything I can do to boost that? I have 30lbs of oil pressure at idle which I've heard is good. The old method of whatever rpm you're at, your oil pressure should be double so at 3k I'm at 60psi. As far as I understand, thats an indication of a healthy motor. I'm going to look into the other parts you mentioned and start getting a part here and there. Haven't beat on the car yet because it still has a lot of issues with the chassis. Bunch of junk suspension parts and brakes are all warped from being beat on by the previous owner. Its been drifted before and I'm guessing the owner before the guy I bought it from blew up the rev up motor drifting it because he didn't have any of the parts you mentioned. Again, thanks for taking the time to offer me that info man, I really appreciate it!
@brandondeel3567 Жыл бұрын
@@tksperformance8789 looking into the pump, looks like its common to run the rev up oil pump with an aftermarket gear. Is this a good idea in your experience or should I go full bullet pump and gear. I seriously doubt I'll build this car over 400 hp unless I get a killer deal on a super charger kit. Even then I won't make more than 450hp. I know these engines tend to let go at that threshold unless you do internals which I really don't plan to do. So I'll probably keep it around 400hp max.
@tksperformance8789 Жыл бұрын
@@brandondeel3567 yeah I'm not sure what it is about the rev up pump housing but I've heard what you said about billet gears in that housing. I think you can run an HR pump too which in itself might be enough since the stock limit is 7500. HP isn't so much the factor with the pump, it's the extended high rpms that are hard on them. Crankshaft harmonics and I'm guessing the hydrostatic pressure of the oil is really high, that equals high load on the gears. Speaking of harmonics definitely don't run those cheap billet solid crank pulleys, you'd be better off with your stock pulley and ideally an ATI Damper would be a good idea, they're so damn expensive though. I don't have one on mine but i don't track it ever, just a single mid mount turbo for some fun on the highway. I think used Revups are getting scarce, most opt for the DE as a more readily available replacement so that's definitely common to do. Personally, if you like the car I'd find a wrecked HR with a good engine and swap everything if that motor ever let's go. That's what I'm most familiar with, I've got an 07. Actually I'm going to post a new video of a quick pull at 8psi. It's been down and i just got it back together and on the road. Check it out

There are a lot of other things they changed tho, like the autorevup when changin gears, stiffer suspension, bigger brakes, facelift, interior changes etc. Overall, nismo doesn´t make that much more power, but it´s more oriented towards racing.

@ejkk9513 Жыл бұрын
Yes, they do! It's even worse, though. The 37 has no access port for the water pump, and you have to remove the entire timing chain cover to do it. I HATE this design. The 35 has given me more pain because of this than any other engine. Ford used the same design in their 3.7 duratec V6. They had many lawsuits over it as coolant would leak into the oil pan causing engine damage.
