To be fair, VW Group did offer an amazing 4L V8 TDI twin turbo on several models in Europe until a few years ago. And in the past, they sold a V10 TDI and the 6L V12 TDI twin turbo. In recent decades, even in North America, engines have been getting smaller on average. In the past, big V8 engines were an American classic, but now they are rare. Some of the only new cars with a V8 are, for example, the Corvette, and high performance versions of the Mustang. But those are sadly only gasoline, not diesel engines. Certain pickup trucks and very large SUVs are the only place you'll find big displacement diesel engines in the 6L range. But even GM is only selling a 3L diesel these days on new large models.

The M550d B57S with the 4 turbo's is actually a very robust and stable engine. We have several clients in our shop that have them, no engine issues at all, not even a higher kilometers (200000+). The previous N57S engine did have some issues, specially when tuned. Tuners did not understand the 3-turbo engine then and overdone it. The M550d B57S can safely be tuned to 480HP and 900NM (even 1000NM, that is the ZF torque limit). Alpine still uses this engine in the D5S, it's a real gem.

One of my colleagues from university has a mechanic shop in which he does mostly BMW's. This 2017 750Ld came in the shop with some turbo problems. The quirky thing about it was that it was an ex-government car and it came with a 40 horsepower bump from factory. I got chauffered around on a little test drive in the most important place in that car, the rear right seat. Even with its faulty turbos, it glued me to seat and was quiet all the way up to the redline.
@muhammadhanifkurnaen6689 Жыл бұрын
One thing that B57 make happy is it share simillar block construction to B58. So BMW make both diesel and gasoline engine on simillar cylinder block. And diesel usually run with higher boost from the factory. Thats make B58 very strong because the block has same standard as B57 does.

Years ago (2012) I talked with a BMW tech about the N57D30 (Tri-Turbo) engine about its reliability: "Usually the first customer of a car with that engine is a lessee, so he/she does not care about repairs as the car is sold after about two years. But beware if you're the 2nd or 3rd owner - even minor repairs are expensive because we have to remove the engine from the car as everything is so crammed inside the engine bay!" (and we're not even talking about BMW OEM spare part and labor prices...).

6:28 the 10 injections per engine cycle thing is a staple of modern common rail direct injection diesels, basically fuel is injected gradually instead of all at once, which improves power, torque, performance when cold and emissions. It was actually pioneered by FIAT who patented the JTD system (jet turbodiesel) which later evolved into JTDm/Multijet and later still into Multijet 2 and 3, which is used on FIAT group (FIAT, Lancia, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Jeep and so on) diesels up to this day. This system was sold by Bosch and formed the basis for all contemporary crdi diesel engines including VW group's TDi, Peugeot group HDi and BlueHDi and BMW and Mercedes diesels

@@shadowsiren3058. Couple of more things, examine the harmonic/dampener balancer very closely. If it is bad, it will take out the main bearings pretty quickly. Look for cracks in the rubber portion. If your AC quits and the charging system light comes on, it is about to leave the “chat” if it hadn’t already done so. And lastly, change the oil/filter every 5K miles. The 09s and 10s appear to have less problems than the 11s do. I think BMW sold about 10K of the 2011s versus maybe 2,000 for 2009 and 2010s combined. Since there are about 5Xs of the 2011s may explain the higher bearing failures. Some speculate that BMW may have received some faulty main bearings. Fun cars to drive though. about the after market power upgrades, you can get 530hp and about 830NM from that engine with a stage1 a stage 2 where you remove the dpf would get you about 570 and almost 900NM. However that engine and its predecessor were made to make a diesel engine "feel" like a petrol engine. I personaly have the f10 m550d and its running with a stage 2 490hp 872NM for 4 years without problems though I removed the AGR, "Drallklappen" as we call them in German and did a few other tweaks to make the engine last longer. OMG they used Piezoelectric injectors again, like in my N54 335i.Have they not learned their lesson from the late mid 2000s. Interesting engine though im sure the torque is absolutely effortless.

I see this and I just imagine a new engine for the next m3/m4 platforms with 4 turbos and 900HP and 3 high pressure fuel pump

Wat about relayebility
@schof1014 Жыл бұрын
Everyone is talking about this thing ! Toss a giant single Turbo add more fuel and tune and you will have 500 hp with 700ftlbs of torque making all these big cars move beautifully

Pardon I small and One large turbo...

Mercedes seems to have done better with a single turbo hybrid diesel from the cls450

Sounds like highly expensive maintenance.

G power numbers not including any deletes probably
@maxxx5798 Жыл бұрын
tuners like g power or abt always keep their power outputs low for reliability. So normal Tuners push these engines to over 500hp with 1000nm of torque.

Im patiently waiting for the n57 video😭😭😭. Heck you can do the predecessor of the b57s. The n57s plz😭

Is it more reliable than the m57?
@TruePurpleHaze Жыл бұрын
@@R3YNZ it has issues with broken oilpumps that lead to spun bearings and also suffers from (somewhat rare) timing chain failure. The N57 in the E9x 325d and 330d is the most reliable variant.

You would think with hydrogen on the brink of being introduced perhaps a separate tank of HHO gas could be injected into the fuel system of this power beast to make it comply with emissions. There are some papers showing hydrogen stratified with diesel fuel making for very minimal emissions.

Im sorry, let me get this straight real quick: - 4 spooly bois - 41 mpg - Compact 3.0L - 400hp - 560lb-ft or torque - 4 spooly bois (have i said that already?) Why hasnt someone put this damn thing in a miata yet?

Sir... That was 5 you put up there😂

can you not just swap the 4 small turbos out for 4 big turbos and see some hefty power and torque gains
@hightiernub1313 Жыл бұрын
How would the reliability be? It would be a disaster to fix or maintain considering there's 4 turbos. It would be smarter to have what Audi has set up or better yet have 2 electric turbos instead of 4 in a sequential set up for more reliability and lesser complexity for maintainence. That way you have that instant torque without the need of more moving components which will increase the chances of a break down. They could've also done a single turbo and single auxiliary compressor like how Volvo does it or better yet just have the same twin turbo I6 in the 50i series and attach a electric compressor. No more turbo lag but good performance.
