Dyson canister latch fix ( PlasticWeld Hack)

This is just a quick video of me fixing my Dyson DC14 All Floor vacuum that had an issue in which the canister would not latch anymore and stay in place.

Anyone else have theirs break in the same spot and a different way to fix it? I never looked to see how much the handle part costs.
The correct way to fix it would have been to take it in or buy a new part that's broken, but I was cheap and impatient ended up using some JB Weld Putty to fix it. Seems to be working well for me for now at least. I think I might break the cover if I try to remove it now though. The putty did seem glue the cover in place which I wish I would have let the putty harden before adding the cover back.

Thanks for the video...!!! Very informative on how to fix this common problem. My Dyson DC14, just started doing this exact same thing, just yesterday. I am going to use a hot Glue Gun instead of using plastic putty. Thanks again for the solution to my problem.

Quick fix tip girl style. First, thanks for the video. It' so generous of you to share your time & knowledge with everyone. I wish this permanent solution would work for me. I have a similar problem, but I'm hesitant to take apart the front of my vacuum. I don't see how to do that & I tend to not be able to put things back together again. Here's my fix: I put a Velcro cinch strap around the canister top & the vacuum stem. My husband uses these straps to hold cords & cables together. That strap cinched the canister tight against the body. Note that I left enough slack that the hose and wand can still sit against the vacuum stem. The only problem is that it's difficult to use the extension wand, something I use every time I vacuum. I'm now looking at sticking a Velcro hook pad on the cannister handle portion & Velcro loop strips on the sides of the vacuum stem, leaving the channel on the back of the vacuum stem free for the hose & wand. . This will require some sort of jury rigging since the loop strips don't seem to come in the right sticky on one side & then loop on the other side combination. But you can make teh velcro solution with a cinch strap work. It looks fine & there's no need to throw away your fantastic Animal & buy a new vacuum that doesn't clean as well. Also, don't pick up the vacuum by the canister handle if you have the strength to lift by the body. Before the vlecro strip, I used blue painter's tape to tape the canister to the vacuum stem. That works in a pinch, or you can just invest in a roll of painter's tape if you're just not the handy type.

I just had the same problem. I don't want to go through that hassle you did because mine is so old and well used. I was thinking about buying a new one anyway, but this video was definitely helpful if I wanted to hang onto it.

Thanks, I appreciate the comment. It's nice to know that someone saw the video. I totally understand just getting a new one and being done with it. Not to mention it's probably a good time with all the sales and Cyber Monday tomorrow. For me since the fix is still working (even though I would enjoy a shiny new one), I plan to just keep using it until it finally dies. I am surprised that the fix is holding up so well so far. Thanks for posting! I have the DC14 and this is the only problem with it so...I'm cracking it open today and giving it a shot to fix. I've see many problems with the new skinny "ball" ones as they constrict the hose to about 1/2 the size and really don't work as well as the old beasts. Great follow up with the suggestion to let the JBW dry before putting on the cover. Let you know how things turn out.

I have the same issue How did you successfully keep the latch from welding in place, allowing it to move correctly?

As it was hardening, I remember pressing it a few times periodically to make sure it didn't get stuck. I still have it and it's still working fine for me after the fix.
