These days you see a lot of games that claim to be "inspired by Earthbound". Let's try and figure out what makes this game so inspiring. Facebook: / nitroradofficial Twitter: / nitrorad

Yeah, Giygas was literally inspired off of a rape scene that Itoi saw when he was young, even though it actually wasn't a rape scene.
@gort18635 жыл бұрын
@@deepspacedruid7673 Giygas represents the loss of innocence, hatred, and anguish. He may have been INSPIRED by a traumatizing event, but that doesn't mean he's a fetus. Again, Itoi said it was false.
@Rioty15 жыл бұрын
Giygas is actually based off a dismemberment scene Itoi falsely remembered as a rape scene. They share similar themes of course; denying someone their autonomy in a tragic way. That’s not to say the reading of Giygas as a fetus symbolizing a child’s loss of innocence playing a roll they don’t belong to and don’t understand is invalid of course; death of the author and all that. But it’s still important to note for both factual accuracy and because that could factor into someone’s own reading of earthbound.

James. When you mentioned the first time you were scared by a video game as a kid, you just jogged a memory I'd LONG forgotten up until JUST right now. I remember being about 8. My grandparents had made a kind of devoted play area for me in the family room downstairs behind the sofa, and I'd play video games on my own little TV, or draw, or play while they watched television. I'd been playing StarFox64 all week and had finally reached Andross, the final boss. I remember coming face to face with this floating face and disembodied pair of hands and being slightly put off, but I kept playing still. It was at the end of this boss fight, when I thought I'd defeated him and beat the game only to have it revealed that he'd been some kind of robot the entire time. Something about seeing his skin disintegrate and leave behind this frantically writhing, animatronic skull was SOOOO traumatizing to 8 year old me. I shut off my N64 and REFUSED to go down into the family room unless at least one of my grandparents was downstairs too. Funny how we hold our childhood memories so dearly and can, in time, come to forget the not so good memories until something brings them back up like this almost two decades later.
@Scorbutics4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I remember seeing that as a kid too, I was not really shocked a lot by the standard Andross form... until you realize the true Andross form is A FREAKING BRAIN WITH EYE GLOBES FLOATING ARROUND WITH ITS NERVES FIBERS AS TENTACLES But... Don't ever give up my son.

For me, what makes me love Earthbound so much is the fact it almost feels like kids creating their own adventure. Like it's what kids would imagine when they dress up in cardboard costumes with their friends and parade around their backyards creating characters and stories. The story is made up of little moments and usually the changes between parts of the game are dramatic and completely different then what we just saw. It's all over the place and the overall creativity of it reminds me of that.

Honestly, I feel like at this point describing an indie game as "inspired by Earthbound" is almost a cliché.
@forteprotze7 жыл бұрын
DrOdd While it IS a bit of a cliché, yes, it doesn't inherently mean it's bad. It just depends on how you do it, like all clichés. However, there have been a lot of indie rpgs that sadly attempt to be Earthbound-like and fail; completely lacking the charm and soul that the series does so well.
@Dr0dd7 жыл бұрын
+windy I wasn't trying to say it was necessarily bad, but just that it's a really noticable trend. It gets to a point where it's almost a meaningless phrase because it's repeated so often.

***** Well, it's hard to translate what the Mother series has into another different genre entirely. A lot of the things the games do can only really be accomplished in a RPG format. And, I think the reason why there isn't a whole lot of games that aren't doing something different every time is because they're drawing inspiration from Earthbound and ONLY Earthbound. It's the most popular Mother game- not only because it's gotten a VC release first, but because it was the only one released overseas, and is notorious for multiple reasons (overpriced carts, the final boss, the battle system, the setting, etc etc). If you were to compare the overall popularity to Mother 3's, you'd find that its VERY small, and even smaller when you compare it to Mother/Earthbound Beginnings. As such, people would take notes from what they know best. Did that make sense? Not sure. Basically, people take more inspiration from Earthbound because it's the most popular Mother game and is what most people know the most and have played the most. It sucks a little, but its understandable. wish that more devs start taking notes from the Mother series as a whole, though. I especially want more battle systems like Mother 3's. (and as a sidenote, the game i mentioned doesn't describe itself as just that, it takes notes from more rpgs like Persona and stuff)

Also it's good that you point out the inspiration Mother took from Peanuts. In a way Peanuts really established this idea of children in mature and sometimes even philosophical situations for mainstream entertainment.

I found the game pretty early on (a month after the full release, people in the EarthBound community and a few friends recommended it to me) before it pretty much went viral everywhere. @breloom6577 жыл бұрын
Yeah... It's not just UT either, tons of great games get a lot of backlash for the same dumb reason. People have to realize this: You can't judge a game based off of its followers AND you can't judge a game's followers as a whole based on a few obnoxious people. There's a lot of crazy people out there, and the more popular a game is, the more likely it is that some of those crazy people will find said game. People just have to learn to ignore those people and enjoy themselves more. This doesn't just apply to video games either.

When I hear that Earthbound was an inspiration. In total honesty, the game is quirky and different from traditional JRPGs. But Mother 2 lacks development, while it may be a kid roaming around, he does not react to it. This is where Mother 3 shines the best because Lucas is put in situations and slowly grows from it. Unfortunately, the only sign of development from Lucas are cutscenes and the quote about Lucas "being unsure what to do" against before you-know-who kills himself.
@forteprotze7 жыл бұрын

You think Shigesato Itoi lied about thinking a horror movie scene was a rape scene, for the press. Also, if it was too risque for Nintendo, why was it re-released in the (relaively) movern day? Surely they would want aborting a fetus burried int heir past for no one to find. Gigas is not a fetus, he is an alien driven insane. first by being torn between love and revenge, and then by the effects of the Devil's Machine that Porky gave him in a vain attempt to control him. He is not a fetus. Fetuses do not speak. There are very easy ways they could have conveyed such a level of innocence as that, and they didn't. So many non verbal enemy descriptions up to that point, it is absurd to think they failed to take this opportunity to describe a creature instinctively curling up, or making barerly audible cries/ Stop with the fetus theory. it's gone on too long.

Amazing video, man. However, that Giygas/fetus thing isn't actually true, was inspired (lol) from Itoi's memory of a movie scene he saw as a child when he walked into the wrong theatre, and confused it for a rape scene. (it actually wasn't one, though- just a sex scene that ended in murder.) The dialogue was even taken a bit from what he had remembered running through his mind at the time. If you took the actual battle background, you'll find its just Giygas' sprite from Mother 1, distorted a bit and flipped upside down. Just wanted to clear that up-again, this was a very good video!

One of my most favorite things about Kirby is the random tone shifts in its games. A good 90% of the game plays its cute charms and relaxing settings and child like senarios to a T. Oh no a evil penguin stole all the food, oh no a cute fairy girl needs our help, oh no a evil ufo is turning everything into robots! But that last 10% is what makes people come back. Dark aliens which can possess people, White huge eyeballs which bleed in a realistic unstylised fashion, creepy jesters and mages who work behind your back in order to take over the world. The more you look into Kirby the more depth you can see. Heck I wont even get into the whole Amazing Mirror lore and theroys.

I'm really glad you covered this subject, as someone who was disappointed by I am Setsuna's presentation. It was not a Chrono Trigger successor by any means. Rather, it felt more like a watered down FF10. And while more controversial, I feel the same way about Bravely Default when compared to FF5. I don't even have any nostalgia for FF5, I even played it after Bravely Default. Anyways, I'm not a huge fan of Earthbond, but I'm still glad it exists for the many great games it inspired.

Yeah dude. I Am Setsuna was aight, I enjoyed it. But like MAN, they did not hit a single note they tried to with the Chrono formula.
@KisekiFox7 жыл бұрын
While I agree on the I am Setsuna part, as a huge fan of FF5 (it's my fav of the SNES era) Bravely Default was perfect to me. It was like 5 but expanded and even better. I can't get enough of the cast, music, and gameplay of that game. How do you feel anything from Bravely Default was watered down compared to 5 when it took all the gameplay mechanics and expanded on them in really interesting ways, with the job system being a lot better/easier to manage and the brave/default mechanic being a fun way of shaking up the turn based formula
@seacliff2177 жыл бұрын
Nanabi Ashiro This wasn't about gameplay, I do think Bravely Default does improve on the core mechanics of FF5 bringing a unique battle system and more strategical battles. This was an issue of bringing similar feelings. I'll go over Bravely Defuatl's characters first. Ringabel and Edea are well written characters and are definitely deeper than anyone in FF5. But Tiz was boring and forgettable (kept forgetting that he had a dead brother, honestly) and Anges comes off as annoying . I also didn't care for many of the Asterisk bosses, outside of a couple plot-important ones like Alternis or Braev Lee, they mostly came off as one-note personalities that were just there because they had to represent their class. However, it's ultimately the game flow of both games that makes me chose to like FF5 more. Both stories were simple and predictable, but Bravely Defualt's story only happened because of the unbelievable ignorance of the characters that could have been resolved if Braev Lee simply just told the good guys his plans instead of complaining all the time he was in the just. And just to kill two birds with one stone, if Braev just did that much at least the repetitive second half of the game wouldn't need to exist. FF5 brought new dungeons, enemy types, and obstacles throughout the entire journey. On the other hand, Bravely Defualt's second half had you go through the same dungeons several times just to fight the same bosses where the only difference is that they have higher stats, that is the definition of padding and it's half the game. I'll admit I got into a rant along the way, that's mostly because those issues were really all I could think about after finishing the game. I have no hatred towards Bravely Default. It's a great game even with it's flaws, being held up with it's deeper gameplay. However, when it comes to the pacing, writing and the overall cast of characters, I still prefer FF5.

I can understand that. I never got bothered by a lot of the problems people had with the game's story and characters (heck, Tiz was my favorite out of the bunch, I love him in both default and the sequel) But I do agree with the whole "Hey Braev you should've told them your plans ya know"

I love the Mother Trilogy! I played them in a completely wrong order though, I started with 3 since it was the first game I heard of with a Fan-made English Patch, and I decided to play a translated ROM of Mother 3, and really enjoyed it, I then played EarthBound/Mother 2 on the Virtual Console for New 3DS and the SNES Classic, and am still playing through Mother 1/EarthBound Beginnings.

Personally, I'm not the biggest Mother fan, but I like the game bit. But it created some of my favorite games- LISA and Undertale- And everything that stemmed from those. Because of this, Earthbound has a special place in my heart.

I Already Completed LISA The Painful Its A Pretty Good Game. I Love The Character,The Unique Skill,Story,And The Decision. There Are Not Good Choice In That Game Which Makes This Game Unique. Love The Humor Though. Time For Score! Undertale - Good Lisa The Painful - Great Earthbound - 10/10 Mother 3 - 99999999999999999999999999999999999999999

There is a game called Oddventure which is in early development stage but has a strong Earthbound vibe and simillar art-style. Maybe we will see another mother-inspired or even mother-like game, soon.

I kinda want to replay the Mother trilogy, it's been years and there are things about it that I want to re-familiarise myself with... But my massive gaming backlog and the fact that I have things to work on which tightly limit my gaming time makes it unreasonable to replay games that I've already played more than once, I have plenty of other things that I also want to experience so I can't keep on dwelling on the same thing like I used to... It's a great series, I have loads of fond memories of it, but for better or for worse, I don't see myself returning to it anytime soon...

I wish to play these games, but I am not good at RPG's though I am trying to play them the best I can. I'm currently playing Chrono Trigger and Pokemon Red. Doing well so far, but still have a long way to go. I also feel I won't be interested in Undertale because I heard from everyone who's played it that. If you make certain mistakes Flowy will destroy your chances of playing the game again, oh gosh I'm not risking that! Though maybe The Mother series at some point. Awesome video Nitro Rad!
@half60237 жыл бұрын
Whatever you heard about "Flowey destroying your chance of playing again" is false. Although, I can confirm that doing certain decisions can permanantly change one of the endings in a minor way

Excellent! You really hit the nail on the head as to why so many games as of recent seem to be inspired by EarthBound. EarthBound, and the games inspired by it, are all really something special despite not looking like much graphically. Also because I'm a huge nerd: Shigesato Itoi, the creator of Mother, has debunked the fetus theory, saying that Giygas looking like a fetus is purely coincidental ;) **EDIT** I now realized that like 20 other people already pointed out that the fetus theory has been debunked. Well at least I was nice about it XD
