Children are less intelligent so that scenario is perfectly valid. Saying you can't compare humans to animals without actually naming a moral difference is bad justifcation. What are animals lacking that justifies different treatment? Intelligence isn't one, we debunked that already.

Hey Ed, my comment isn't so much related to this video but I'd like to see items added to your clothing line. I'm a vegan bodybuilder but there isn't any athletic wear specifically for vegan bodybuilders or athletes. I mean, I can wear athletic wear of any kind, but I mean athletic wear that says "vegan" or "plant-based" on it. Not to brag, but I'm usually the fittest person at my gym. I was wearing an Under Armor spandex shirt and I thought, "I wish this said Vegan across the chest, or down the side of the arm. Or perhaps, shorts or workout pants with the word Vegan on them. There's really nothing for us. I know a few other vegans who are bodybuilders and we use our looks to dispell the myth that you can't get big, strong, and rippped on a vegan diet. I really wish there was a clothing line for us so we could promote veganism in that way.

I’m very happy about your partnership with tree planting. In my area the government has been working to destroy fruit bearing trees in public areas ( they are too messy). I’m vegetarian ( I’m allergic to animals protein) I do have a couple of concerns with the plant based diet. My first is what is the plan for plant product residue, soy for example the stover, hulls, seed coat and ect? Burn them? Make pillows? Package material? 2 what is the plan for crop failure for example corn crop during a drought, too much rain, disease, short growth season? 3 if digested vegetation and biological waste from animals produces methane gas , doesn’t compost? 4 if human beings are not capable of digesting certain plants ( like animals can) does that mean these plants will have to be eradicated and replaced with mono crop? 5 can we have wild flowers and native grass if the land is needed for tofu production?
@redbriarn6295

There are movements to produce fuel from animal waste. Animals convert solar energy from plants into food. Crops fail every year, animals eat the failed crops in the form of silage. Animals eat waste products ( think pigs eating slop) and convert these waste byproducts into protein, vitamins, and fats as well as textiles and other products. There is a civil war in north Ethiopia right now they need food, we need to supply them with a high energy source of food. Pigs can literally convert human feces into food. No plant on earth can do that!!!
@redbriarn6295
@redbriarn6295 2 жыл бұрын
Human feces is 22 percent protein, a pig can grow 1 pound per day on a very poor diet. I’m not saying that every would should eat meat, dairy or eggs ( I don’t eat meat ever ) . But we really need to consider a world where people are starving, the agriculture department have a label “not fit for human consumption “. I’m not saying the killing of animals is a good thing, but what about the actual starvation of human beings. We really need to stop eating so much meat ( food in general). But we need to understand the TDN ( total digestible nutrition) that livestock can turn into food from waste products.

@Earthling Ed hey Ed I hope you're gonna read this. I'm vegan for 2 years and really love your work, thank you so much. Although there's one argument (also used in other videos of yours) I catch myself heavily disagreeing with you multiple times already. this time it's starting at 9:16 where you basically talk about that plants are not sentient and don't make decisions. Now I don't wanna start a debate, I just wanna recommend to you one book which is "The Secret Life of Trees" by Peter Wohlleben if you haven't already read it. You may find yourself realizing that plants are indeed sentient and conscious with the capacity to suffer and feel pain, just like animals, they just have a "lifestyle" really different from us so I understand when people think they aren't. I myself didn't believe it either. Well of course I still agree with the argument that a vegan lifestyle is still better in that scenario as less plants are used. I realy don't mean to offend you or anyone, just wanted to share my opinion here.

Tbh the natural reaction of plants to a stimuli can still be comparable to our pain reaction it's also an automatic reaction to stimuli so i feel like it's not really an argument, i think what would be a good argument is that to lower suffering the most we can only go as far as removing animal based products since humans can live without them but not plants, which means we are obligated uhh plant eaters...(idk the word) and thus its moral!

Fruit trees for example even need animals to eat their fruits in order to fertilize their seeds, so of course we won't cause them harm by eating fruits. But other plants work differently and I have to honestly admit that I understand it to an extent with trees but not with all those other plant like vegetables we mostly consume. I don't know if they are all similiar in the way they perceive and interpret their environment etc. There's certainly more learning for me to do on that but I think we can always try to go a step further to reduce the unnecessary harm we cause.

I was vegan before I found your channel. My wife became vegetarian when there was a vegan table at our campus. They gave us vegan jerky if we watched 5 minutes of factory farming videos. My wife actually turned me vegetarian, and then several horror documentaries later, I choose veganism and she following shortly behind me. The reason why I love your channel is it helps me be a better vegan. I can debate non-vegans much better because I can use your key arguments against them. The arguments that I run into with the nonvegans in my life is the "but you have to eat meat to be healthy," but they acknowledge factory farming is horrible. The second issue I run into is the "but you can eat organic meat," even though those who make this argument are likely not eating organic meat. And then of course, if you asked them to watch the horrors of animal factory farming, they think you are disgusting and into gore. No one wants to see it, but you watch it so you can empathize and realize how you are apart of the problem when you eat meat. I feel like every vegan hears the same arguments, but not every vegan knows how to respond. You really and truly help with that process, I think.

For the "plants don't want to be eaten" comment, if they're really worried about it, they should realize that plants make fruiting bodies like fruits and vegetables for the sole purpose of being eaten. The same goes for some fungus like truffles. Also, again, if they're really worried about it, this means they should live their lives as fruitarians. The fact that plants, fungus, and other non-intelligent life forms might feel fear and pain beyond harvesting fruiting bodies is not justification to go out and slaughter animals. If you shoot down veganism as not enough because even plants can be harmed, then eating meat and other exploitation of animals is doubly immoral. Not the best pro-omnivore talking point.

@Ryan Robinett I agree that Ed seems to have avoided the point I was making and that it is a blurry divide between sentience and non-sentience. I was just making an additional counterpoint to that original comment, not a counter-counterpoint to Ed's counterpoint. But the example with the huckleberry bush doesn't make sense. A single plant, or species that relies on passive modes of reproduction like spreading seeds doesn't make sense. It can't care less if you are a fruitarian or not, but it doesn't know what happens to its seeds when the berries are eaten, so it can't react to this anyhow, as an individual plant or species. So effectively, getting rid of its fruit somehow is the end of its business, as an individual. As a species, it would be to appeal to the species which eats the fruit and helps spread its seed, and to protect and deter against species and scenarios which fail to spread the seed, whatever that may be. Anyhow, my point was a moral one, not an evolutionary biological one. This is kind of getting off-topic. But in the spirit of your last question, I think the better way to go about it is if our actions harm or kill an organism when we exploit it. The definition of harm is fuzzy, once again, but it is fairly reasonable that plucking a fruit meant to be plucked or naturally drop otherwise, would not harm the plant. This logic could be extended to other parts of a plant like leaves and roots. See Jain ethics for a more complete analysis of that.

@Ryan Robinett Have you actually studied horticulture? It's entirely chemical, and their are many different mechanism responsible for various functions. For example, seeds decide when to emerge based on the light quantity and quality reaching them. This is because some seeds need to be fairly close to the soil surface due to the limitations if the energy stored within them. Is that decision sentient? Of course not. Reactionary awareness is not the same as self awareness and sentience.

@Ryan Robinett Most plants and fungus will keep on living after you consume from them. All fruits, peppers, nuts, most fungus keep on living. Cashew trees live to 100. @@prosandcons-fl2cc you have only posted about 1/3rd of the meaning of cult, would you like me to post the entire oxford dictionary meaning of cult or would that not suit your narrative? I can also post behaviours that define a cult. Would you like to see that also?

What are the 2 types of morality? Hint: good and bad isnt the answer. Thinking they are however, defines your moral perspective.

Great job Ed. You could probably do another 1000 videos on carnist comments on that video. As for that comment about the doctor, I mean, most people over age 75 don't even know what "vegan" means, so they certainly aren't living the lifestyle.....veganism is much more prevalent among younger generations than older generations anyway; that "argument" is flawed in so many ways, and as Ed mentioned (and I was thinking too), it actually could mean the opposite of what the commenter was getting at....
