When i started learning, i did not know the difference between re and mori, and why my friend use it. So a girl friend of mine told me it's ok to say it between close friends. One time, i was joking with coworker who was older than me and i made the mistake of saying "mori", her face changed from happy to complete anger, eventhough she knew that i don't speak greek. So i learned 🤣

"Ρε" can be impolite and offensive. Learners of Greek should be able to recognise the word and its possible connotations but at the same time they should refrain from using it, not least when they don't really master the exact meaning of it. Interesting video, though. Keep up the good work.

I'm so glad that I found you guys! I've only watched a few episodes but they're all great! Thanks for clarifying these common yet confusing words! I have a couple questions about Crete, where I live... People here tend to say 'Vre', more than 'Re', but I've heard and seen it used/written more like 'Ombre' or 'Mbre'. I'm guessing it's the same word or coming from the same root, but is it just a village accent or a local dialect? Also, the most common words I hear locals say when they greet each other or answer the phone and constantly in general conversation is 'Vre Malaka' If you haven't already, can you do a video about the use of the word Malaka? (yes I know what it means, but I"m interested in your take on the word as well as the social implications of using it). Thanks and keep up the great work!

@eternal___official 2 жыл бұрын
i suppose the easiest way is by the tone! But also, when we get angry we tend to end our sentence with it. Τι κοιτάς ρε; - What are you looking at? Moreover, I think that, most likely, if they want to offend you they won't just be using Re. 99% of the time it accompanies an insult, cause its main use is to emphasize. Φύγε ρε μαλάκα! - Go away wanker! If they are asking u a question in an angry matter the "Re" will most likely be in the end of the sentence. If it's at the begging, they are probably getting annoyed cause you haven't been paying attention. Ρε Νίκο, χθες δε μιλήσαμε; - Niko, didn't we speak yesterday? Έλα ρε Νίκο, αφού χθές είπες πως θα κόψεις το κάπνισμα! - Niko, come on! You did say you'd quit smoking, yesterday. All in all is like those insults that you feel more comfortable only around your friends, but is considered the softest insult at the same time. Most common example is your friend apologizing after calling you "Ρε Μαλακα" (in a friendly way, of course), BUT he's apologizing for the "Re" - to indicate that he's not actually apologizing, since it is about something as meaningless. So, he's really just joking about apologizing.

@@EasyGreekVideos Exactly my thought. I mean I would not ask for a beer at a bar and say ρε, but I guess in the heat of any conversation it slips. Also thanks for the great content!!!

Γενικα, αν καποιον λεει "ρε" σε σενα, μπορεις να το λες σε αυτον τοτε;
@EasyGreekVideos

"Re" is a way to call somebody instead of using his name. When "re" is used as an assault: when anything else is followed. For eg: "Τι κάνεις ρε;" (Where are you re) "Πες μου ρε" (Tell me re) (oh great assault :/ ) --> Exception: "Έλα ρε" is not an assault at all When "re" indicates familiarity: When a word is followed. Eg. "Έλα ρε παιδιά" (come on re guys) "Που 'σαι ρε 'συ;" (= Που είσαι ρε εσύ;) (Where are re you?) Aaaand....you never use "re" with strangers... Or even more, in formal talking!!

"Μωρέ" (more) on the other hand is a sweet and caring word, no matter what. Mostly used in central and southern Greece. (Northern Greeks are more "villagers")

@@marjiemarjie5088 Yes it is! I'm totally Greek, and I'm also a columnist. "More" is not rude; it's a sweeter world. One can hear "more" from central and southern Greece, not in the northern part of it. Especially, in Athens. Ps. I'm a villager, as well
