What the worst thing about being rich?
Is it that all the poor people blame you for all their problems? Is it that they always make fun of you? Is it that they never understand if they just work hard 'like you' they too shall ascend the crystal floor? Is it that no one understands you? You have no real friends, and the only people surrounding you are just looking to take every advantage they can before dumping you in the trash?
Or is it that your wealth has promoted you to a point of sheer privilage that you have lost all notion of true reality, that you live on a plane of existence so far beyond what the common folk see you might as well be on another planet. Is it that you look down all you see is angry, jealous stares gazing back up at you making you feel enraptured in a sense of power that you cannot help but sneer back.
Or is it that your neighbor has a bigger boat?
Hello, my name is Lazerpig and I shall be your candidate for the 2025 Elections standing for the "Eat the Rich" party.
We here at PigHQ know that the Rich are like exotic birds, try to tax them and watch them flee to Monaco. We propose to move Monaco closer to the sun, therefore removing this problem once and for all.

A few decades ago in the US it was considered extremely trashy among the truly wealthy to show off to the poors how much money you have (after all, they might get envious and write their Congressmen demanding that they raise your taxes). They'd drive around prole-land in Oldsmobiles and the fancy rich boy toys would be hidden away in their huge estates that were invisible from the street. Their clothes would be just like anybody else's formal clothes only they fit better, lasted longer, cost ten times as much, and had a bunch of tiny differences in cut and style calculated so that the other rich bastards (oooh, that suit must have been tailored by J. Ronald Crosfield in Amherst, New Hampshire, I bought a suit from him in 1961 and I still wear it!) would notice and you, peasant, would not. And of course only a parvenu boor would go around in some flashy superyacht (which haven't even been invented yet), you want a wooden sailing yacht with servants to handle the rigging because motors are for casuals. Sure the old WASP elite were bastards but compared to the new super-rich I miss them.
@kyledonahue9315
@kyledonahue9315 2 жыл бұрын
The difference lies in the fact that the old WASPs recognized that they were born into wealth and privilege. The new managerial class however are under the delusion that they’ve “earned” their money and therefor have no obligations to anyone over how they flaunt it. Compare Andrew Carnegie to Jeff Bezos: Whereas Carnegie built schools with his fortune, Bezos uses his to fly into space.

@@kyledonahue9315 Indeed, Carnige would be absolutely disgusted with the modern elite. His whole philosophy revolved around the responsibility of those blessed with wealth to help those who are less fortunate and to provide means by which they themselves can obtain wealth. One thing I think people have seemed to have forgotten is class. It’s what sets everyone a part at their respective economic levels. Everyone is attracted to a classy, respectful person, not the three hundred other people in the room who have just about the same amount of money. It supplements a personality, it shows your wealth doesn’t change you, your experience does. Personal story: The richest guy that I know is an angel investor, was a mentor I connected with. He has over 200mil to his name, he always offers to pay for everyone’s meal and he always tips 30% at a minimum, he drives a Toyota Corolla, always dresses in a casual suit, never talks over anyone. Howard Hughes was the most Chad rich guy ever to live. A total genius and a total maniac and played wonderful pranks on people in Las Vegas like he would go out to the highway leading into the Las Vegas dressed up like a hobo and ask for a lift into town and anyone who gave him a lift he would literally as soon as he got to where he asked to go would have someone there with a briefcase of cash and just give them the briefcase stuffed full of money and tell them they were a good person. This addition to being a complete and total germaphobe when he was inside of his Penthouse apartment to the point where he would pee in Coke bottles and wear tissue boxes on his feet for slippers. The man is the definition of so rich he went insane not knowing what to do with the money. The craziness the man is known for is just astounding. Most famously in my opinion is the idea of the Spruce Goose. Back when it was created it was done with technology that would never allow it to ever fly more than a few feet off the damn water ( it's been theorized though it could be remade today and actually work and put most modern luxury airliners to shame). Business magnate media mogul absolute lunatic. All of these can be used to describe Howard Hughes. But seriously, the richest person you know is likely someone you don’t realize is rich. They just live an average seeming life with a nice house, a close family, a lifestyle they enjoy, probably behave somewhat eccentrically because why not, and rarely if ever talk about their money. You’re British, I’m sure you’re well aware of the difference between new money & old money & smart money & dumb money & colonial money & happiness. Years back I worked for an excavation company that also did landscaping in the northwest of Connecticut. One of the clients we had was the son of Charles Kaman (as in Kaman Aerospace & Ovation guitars). Smallish weekend house with a literal million dollar view (I am fairly certain that when they sold that house, the view alone bumped the price up by that much), up in the hills. Another client was the author Philip Roth. Another weekend house, and where he would write. Typical colonial from 200 years ago, a few acres of fields, detached study (for writing) and some other amenities. Also concord grapes growing all over the place and a half dozen different apple trees. And he didn't care how much of those we harvested. The last client I shall mention, was this short unassuming gay black guy. Apparently he grew up in some shithole out near Boston, said "screw this shit" and studied his ass off, went to college on a scholarship and went into investment banking. His first year out, he did so good, that the people he was working for tried to screw him out of the money they legally owed him. (Can you just imagine some pompous old dickheads getting pissed because the new, gay, black guy just showed them all up and now they owe him a small fortune?) So he sued the shit out of them, won, and started his own investment firm with the money. Now he lives in what is about as close to a modern castle as you will get here (outside of Gillette Castle anyways). Bigass secluded stone built house out in the foothills. You won't find it unless you know where to go, or if you are bored and get lost driving around. If you met any of these people, you would never know that they had tons of cash (and I doubt you would know that Roth was a ridiculously famous author just by seeing him and his house there). Compare them to the wannabe rich people I met working a similar job in Avon, Connecticut. They were the people that had a house for 2 years before they had to move for a lack of money. Would buy the biggest stainless steel grill they could find and never use it. Would do the same with cars that they did with houses except on a timescale of months instead of years. Would bitch about someone putting a single mark on their shit lawn that they would never pay to properly maintain....... you get the idea.... To finish: All of the people I have met, who have money up the yin-yang (and sometimes some serious fame with some actors and, like I said, Roth), never look it..... they don't give a shit..... giving a shit is what poor people do.

@@lazzie7495 Well ok, but my comment was more about using exaggeration/escalation for comedic effect. Because replacing all the panels with titanium alloy panels would cost way more than simply gold-plating them, and would thus be an even better way of squandering one's billions, whilst also making the boat lighter and therefore potentially faster Meanwhile the ballast tanks are actually rated for the laden displacement of the vessel, so the extra weight of the gold plating most likely would cause issues with restoring buoyancy for operations such as surfacing. No problem with sinking, tho. That bling U-Boat would dive faster than Liz Truss's approval ratings this week 👍

As to why the mega-yacht crowd don't build a model of the SS Great Eastern - it would be too expensive (yes, really) and, more importantly, time-consuming. Making something actually new (or a replica of the old) and interesting not only costs a huge amount of money, but takes a lot of time and requires a lot of skills that you'd have to pay for and cultivate. This is also part of the reason why mega-mansions are so sad and lifeless - it's far easier to build a depressing pseudo-modernist house and then slap a bunch of poorly-cut marble all over the shop than it is to hire real craftsmen to carve a 1:1 replica of the North wall of Medinet Habu into your gigantic statement living room/ultimate PC gaming rig receptacle. So mister mega-billionaire looks politely at concept art of a submersible yacht or whatever, and then simply buys the triple-decker + helipad option from the catalogue before checking the the colour of aged hardwood he prefers in his pre-fab middeck bar.

The primary reason why so many megayachts look identical is because they are all designed to be the largest ocean-going vessal they can be that doesn't need to register as a cruise ship. One month they'll be on the French Riviera, then the Bahamas, then Cabo, then Fiji and so on. The ship will have a full-time crew, possibly even 2 crews that cycle out every few months or between major sea crossings. This is why so many yachts appear in movies - the owner gets to make money towards the maintenance while writing the various expenses off as a cost of business.

No neighbors for a few miles each way. Lush forrests and clean drinkable water flowing in crystal clear little water falls and winding creeks, covered in moss and ferns and accompanied with echoing birdsong high in the hills. I want for nothing and I have access to some of the best doctors and surgeons in the world, for free! I know that my standard of living is better than most people on earth. I don't have to work anymore, if I don't want to. I am grateful and do not take it for granted. Yet I am among the poorest people here. I am unemployed and homeless, living in Australia. These are labels and categories that society needs to place on us, yet the facts of the lifestyle are different to the generally accepted cliché, in my case at least. No, I can't buy a yacht, but still, many of the trappings of wealth are here and enjoyed. It's almost like it's gone full circle because I'm kind of taking the land and using it, just like the original settlers did. I'm putting it to good use. It was Terra Nullius before. Ha ha ha. Thank you Laser pig.

My dad owns a small boat (26 foot sailboat) there are a number of other sailboat of the same class as his, AND YET, despite most of these boats all being nearly identical in terms of structure, despite a number of them be generic white Fibreglass, they are all unique and identifiable, with stripes of colours and differently painted hulls, coloured hatches, different coloured sail covers different shaped cabin windows different font for the name on the stern, you get the point. That those tiny sailboats can maintain an identity though even just one of the above listed and the lack of these super yachts to do even that is proof of the fact that super yachts are creative black holes.

Lazerpig gets one thing wrong - the mega wealthy at a certain point DO stop caring about the status symbols, especially cars. Unlike houses, cars don't store or gain value so they're seen as an unnecessary loss even if that loss is relatively small to them. My boss was a billionaire heir from birth and he drives a ratty 1996 Miata and usually looks like a hobo. He should still definitely be eaten though, especially when you consider how little he pays us.

I have worked with 2 billionaire executives who have directly helped to expand the employment opportunities of thousands of people worldwide . Strange thing is non of them own a hypercar, a yacht, and only one owns a small plane that he has as a side business and as a means of getting engineers, troubleshooters and supplies to work sites in a hurry. Now if you look at a few of their kids then yes they are the "imagination free zones" you speak of so i say lets not eat the rich then just castrate them lol.

Much more useful than a ship I will spend ten days of my life on and then forget I own, or perhaps charter it off to some criminal or something. I cleaned peoples swimming pools in college as a summer job. I quickly saw the two types of rich your talking about. One set of people liked to think they were rich and were total assholes in some vain attempt to make everyone around them think they are important. They actually used their pool. Then you had people who were truly rich, where $100,000 to them was a drop in a bucket that was their finances. Those people were rather nice and professional, but they never used their pool. It was bigger, nicer, and more expensive then everyone else’s, and that was the only reason for having it. Either way rich people helped pay my way through school. So that was nice, I’m glad they had swimming pools.

@@therealgeneralMacArthur Cops are not marodeurs, you know. They are bureaucrats. There are rules, and forms to be filled, and calculations to be made, and, above all, laws to be followed. Written ones. A _real_ general would know that 90% of the military is logistics. An army travels on her stomach. Your roughnecks are kept fed and operational by an army of pencil necks with pens. Invading Korea at the point where it was least defended because it was the point that was easiest to defend was certainly a stroke of genius, but your marines still needed Diesel to arrive there. What could you have done if Aramco had said "No oil for you", invaded Iraq?

I’ve always said if I became a billionaire instead of getting a regular yacht I would totally make some replica of something like the USS Texas dreadnought, obviously I would make the inside pretty yacht like maybe the actual conning tower area and the command structure would be World War II era, but the majority of the below deck area would be like a yacht since due to modern tech I don’t need as much crew, and since the guns and such are for show I dont need ammunition storage, armor belts or steam engines.
