I realize “superfood” carries a certain hype, but some foods do earn that status. Food is medicine. And some foods are more powerful medicines than others! Food is most powerful tool to create optimal health. Food is the first and most powerful drug in my arsenal to treat patients.

I live in an independant living facility in Cochrane, Alberta. I had a box of books, many on healthy eating. A staff member,( cleaning- staff) , unfortunately for me , has stolen many items from my room, among things, these books l wish l still had to refer to. I am trying to copy down quickly information from my cellphone to replace information in the many books l used to have. How l wish now that l had never moved from my home.

I love the expression "Eat the rainbow". My dad used to tell me back in the 1980s that nature colour-codes its food and we should therefore eat as many different colours as possible to get all the nutrients. (He wa English teacher, not a scientist, but well-read). As DR Hyman implies, it's important not to become a slave to a handful of superfoods - variety is key. I try adding something new to my diet every week. (The neglected spice rack in the kitchen cupboard to a great place to start!).

The challenge to his top five is that almost none of the are routinely available to the average person - MCT Oil? Glucomannan? He almost mentioned one, mushrooms, until he referenced one type of mushroom in China. Chia/flax/Hemp are now in sometimes supermarkets though expensive. Vegetables of different colors is the one that is regularly accessible. It would be more helpful to more people to talk about making the best food choices given what’s available.

I had cancer and EVERY DAY--"Let they food be thy medicine"! The Lord healed me through wisdom from people like you (about food) AND BELIEVING that I AM WORTH IT! (to buy the healthy food, even if it costs me more--which it usually doesn't. If I eat whole foods--NOT premade "health meals" I ACTUALLY SAVE MONEY! (and TIME in the store, so I can create more to help this world!)

Two of my favorite (I really have a lot!) super food simple yummy recipes: I like fresh sliced beets, I add olive oil, lemon (either juice or essential oil), a bit of sea salt, sometimes a bit of garlic powder!!! I also like to make chia seed pudding, especially because I used to really like tapioca pudding and rice pudding but dont eat them anymore (or at least conventional ones with sugar and all, I'm sure I could make my own that I can eat healthily!!) But for chia pudding, I mix about two TBSP chia seeds (organic my favorite), with about 1/2 cup coconut milk (unsweetened) (you can use any- almond milk, rice milk, oat milk, regular (good quality) cow milk, etc. You can even use water if you cant have any types of milk!) (You can use more or less liquid depending on the consistency you like ), Let the chia seeds and liquid sit for about 3-5 min at least for the cool pudding type consistency!! I add (before or after it sits-doesnt matter!!) cinnamon to taste, about 1 tsp maple syrup or honey, and sometimes I'll add some almonds, shredded coconut (UNSWEETENED!-Bob's red mill at Marc's or walmart) and every once in a while, top with a few small pieces chopped dark chocolate (not the sugar saturated, I like endangered species brand). You can be creative and add so many kinds of things-dried fruit, other nuts, flax seed, fresh fruit like apple chunks or berries, so much more! Hope I've inspired some of ya'll!! Eating well can be fun and desirable!! Thank you Dr Mark for your amazing truths of food as medicine that you share and help so many with!! God bless you, and may many people find healing and wellness from your knowledge shared!!!!

I wish more people would watch these to improve health and weight loss - maybe if you created more “markety videos” that would appeal the public we could make these go viral. I am trying so hard to eat superfoods ans feed them to my child for great health. Family members have suffered from diabetes, dementia, and auto immune. I wish they had implemented your ideas to help with these issues.. much love from California

I would add pure raw cacao. I like to use the whole form, cacao paste (also called cacao liquor I think, although it presents as a hard block), as it is not transformed and retains the cacao butter. That makes it very easy to melt in warm rice milk for instance and does not need sweetener of any kind. It is delicious and definitely a superfood. I mix it with a teaspoon of macca powder.

ABC Smoothie ; red apple , beets ( cooked) carrots ( steamed ) , strawberries, blueberries. I usually add filtered water to my smoothies , sometimes cooked oatmeal, flax , and anything fruit or vegetables of the same color that I like Orange smoothie : oranges ( chinese) , carrots, papaya , pineapple, water , flax. Sometimes banana. + I'm looking for a life change in diet due to IBS and am going to be omitting dairy and red meat from my diet. It's a process of how and where to start. Thanks for responding to my urgent gut need. I added an abundance of chia seeds to my diet, among some other healthy choices, and my bowels have exploded with movement! Unfortunately, Juicing for me is deadly. With my problem with dysphagia, you know aspirating food and drink into my lungs, can and does lead to pneumonia. I bought a nutribullet some years back, and tried several veggie, fruit, seed or nut combinations, aspirating each time. I finally gave my nutribullet away. The fact is, if I cannot find an answer to this problem I will die! I will not give up food. A tool by Abilex has had some very good results, but I need an ENT who is familiar with it to help maximize results. Thanks again for the help. Any knowledge on correcting dysphagia I could really use. Again, thanks.

It makes a wettish dough and I only eat 2 thin slices a day with _real_ butter. Eggs, salad ingredients, mushrooms.

There are over 29 million Americans with diabetes, and another 57 million are prediabetic (as of 2012).1 From 1997 to 2007, the number of diabetics increased by 48%.2 In the US, the incidence of diabetes is increasing approximately 1% per year with no end in sight.3 Pre-1940, there were no type 2 diabetics, and type 1 diabetes was rare. Diabetic complications can be significant. For example, diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) alone cost the health-care system over $10 billion/year, and the chance of death within 5 years of DFU diagnosis is greater than that for many cancers.4 What Caused the Diabetic Explosion? Over the last 50 years, the following events stand out: (a) The US government wanted to grow America's farming industry. High-glycemic wheat products became king. So did fruit juices. (b) The US government embraced the notion of a high-fiber diet. Irish physician and surgeon Denis Burkitt postulated (guessed) in 1971 that Africans had less cancer and heart disease because they consumed more plant foods containing fiber. Heart researcher Dr. George Mann did work documenting that a high-fat/animal source diet of the Masai tribe lacking plant-based (fiber) foods did not predispose them to heart disease, and was conspicuously absent from Burkitt's book, Western Diseases. With this vital information overlooked, America embraced the oat-bran fad whereby 60% of caloric content would be from grains. No one calculated that this would add a minimum - based on only a 2000 calorie/day diet - of 60 teaspoons of sugar (glucose) to the bloodstream each day, making existing diabetics' blood sugars significantly worse. (c) Researchers wrongly focused on minimizing salt intake. Science was suppressed showing that natural salts (such as minimally processed sea salt) are active transports (via facilitated diffusion) for insulin - making existing insulin and injected insulin more effective (decreased insulin resistance).5-7 Most health practitioners believe that all salt elevates blood pressure. That is incorrect, and salt consumption is not the cause of elevated blood pressure in the vast majority of patients.8 The 10,000-patient INTERSALT Study concluded: "Salt has only a small importance in hypertension."9 Lack of salt is now known to increase insulin resistance and increase the risk of CVD.10,11 (d) The next mistake made by medical researchers was advocating a supposed heart-healthful, low-fat "Prudent Diet" (promoted post-1957). This diet advocated replacing saturated fats from eggs, butter, cheese, cream, and lard with highly processed polyunsaturated vegetable oils such as margarine. It is now known that processed (nonfunctional) polyunsaturated linoleic (LA) acid-based cooking oils such as interesterified fats (the supposedly more healthful replacement for transfats) - sold in supermarkets and used in restaurants - significantly elevate blood glucose levels.12,13 There Are Three Distinct Components to Insulin Resistance Insulin Resistance - Phase 1: Pancreatic Overload Let us now turn to the etiology of insulin resistance. First, humans were never meant to ingest the enormous numbers of carbohydrates so common in America today. For example, a 5-fold increase in plasma glucose, approximately just 5 teaspoons of sugar, causes a 20-fold increase in insulin output (Figure 1).14 Diabetic patients often consume more than 10 teaspoons of sugar at just one meal, and they often eat 4 to 6 times or more per day. Additionally, many diabetic patients consume 15 to 20 teaspoons of carbohydrate in a single sitting. Although blood glucose levels above 250 mg/DL are uncommon, they can occur, as the Textbook of Medical Physiology . Every 20 calories/5 grams of carbohydrate = 1 teaspoon of sugar potentially in the bloodstream - raising BG levels. Insulin Resistance - Phase 2: Impaired Insulin Clearance Rate (MCRI) What is not so obvious is that there is often an additional problem - impaired clearance of excess insulin generated by supraphysiologic amount of glucose. This supraphysiologic carbohydrate-induced insulin response is often accompanied by a decreased insulin clearance rate - the metabolic clearance rate of insulin (MCRI).15 This abnormality allows blood glucose levels to potentially drop dangerously low. Perfect Disaster - Glucose Overload + Impaired MCRI This excess insulin production coupled with the impaired insulin clearance rate is a "perfect disaster." Because of these simultaneous conditions, a corresponding yet abnormally dangerous "low" blood glucose levels always follow high levels of blood glucose. Therefore - in an attempt for homeostasis - the body will eliminate (destroy) pancreatic beta cells so that less insulin is produced. This will likely be termed an "autoimmune disorder," but it is probable to be instituted as a protective mechanism at the tissue/organ level. Of course, with decreased beta cell functionality, blood glucose in these patients now remains elevated, but the body has no choice; elevated blood glucose levels are less dangerous than low blood glucose. I love to eat purslane. It has the highest omega 3 content in plant form that I know of. It is grown and eaten on every continent. But in the U.S. it is seen as a weed that competes with traditional agricultural plants so it is killed with herbicides.
