Functional medicine aims to uncover the laws of biology, treats the human body as an ecosystem, and is about creating health, not just curing illness. Mark Hyman is one of the foremost practitioners of functional medicine, one of its earliest advocates, and is certainly one of its best spokesmen. On this episode of Health Theory with Tom Bilyeu, Mark Hyman explains the rationale behind functional medicine and describes its most important features. He also gives detailed advice on improving the diet, talks about what it means to say that food is information, and discusses the connection between the body, mind, gut and brain.

As a food and health educator and someone who's been following Dr. Hyman for over fifteen years I have the utmost respect for what he's gone through and what he teaches. The origin of the word Docere ( where the word doctor comes from) comes from the Latin word for "teacher," itself from docēre, meaning "to teach." Dr. Hyman is a teacher and has helped create thousands of teachers around the world just by listening to him, reading his books and following his example. My name is Robert Kyes and I've also had the privilege to help thousands of people regenerate some aspect of their health over the years ( I share this to let you know I understand his knowledge and his impact as a Dr. and person). " I am because we are." We need to build living centers ( farms and health education centers) to dramatically change the state of the health of this country. Its true HEALTH IS OUR GREATEST WEALTH!!

After seeing an assortment of specialists who couldn't come up with any clear diagnosis (and in fact simply suggested therapy,) I began researching my symptoms & complaints myself. Every single issue pointed directly to two things: gluten & sugar. I went cold turkey from each and within a week all my issues & complaints either lessened or disappeared. Within 3 months the rest disappeared, and my research had only begun. It's empowering to come to this understanding by yourself. My journey started more than 15 years ago. It's so comforting that others can find it now readily available from doctors and health practictioners willing to go against long held & outdated belief!

LOL same as me! I got super sick, almost healed now. 15 years of nothing but reading studies, listening to experts, digging, and then putting it all together! It drives me crazy how simple it really can be if you know what you are looking for. Most important thing I can tell people, first step remove bad gut biome.. ALWAYS! Then intake good nutrition and depending upon what is wrong with you will determine your intake. It all starts in gut and inflammation is the one constant in every disease.

@Stephen Meyers. Can I ask what your typical diet and nutrition consist of?
@stephenmeyers811
@stephenmeyers811 4 жыл бұрын
@@rogerc23 on the road my typical diet is diner food. I burn in excess of 8,000 calories in a day. Animal products are the easiest way for me to get the protein I need without having a sore jaw. I still run into caloric deficit issues as my stomach gets full. I'm doing a lot of meat and eggs. I like colorful vegetables and fruit. So, if fajitas are available I'm getting them.
@rogerc23

@@stephenmeyers811 thanks for replying and well done with your journey I totally support you. I’ve suffered from severe anxiety (could be ptsd) since about age 5 through many abusing environments and shock deaths. The reason I asked is a lot of my symptoms and attacks have gone away or massively reduced in severity since I changed my diet 1.5 years ago. I honestly don’t know if this is the only reason (I also left work to focus on elite triathlon training) to one of whole food plant based. I still have a small amount of meat maybe 3 times out of the 90 meals I’d eat in a month. I’ve never taken any medication. My gut feel though is the vegetables are just providing me with vastly more nutrients to feed my mind and maybe heal it and the reduction in meat has helped by not putting mentally distressed and depressed animals into my system. Look just some food for thought as I know you’d have a lot of time on your journey to think things over and ponder. Keep doing the good work and I wish you really well. Very hard to eat in the road and keep those calories up. Remember spinach and quinoa are awesome sources of protein as well as beans and most supermarkets will have them set out ready to eat If you want to skip the diner now and again :-). All the best mate.

@@rogerc23 Thank you for the advice. I do love my veggies. I'm glad you were able to overcome PTSD. Regarding PTSD correlation... something I learned and sometimes forget...the symptoms I feel at the same time may have different causes. For example; a depressed mood from low vitamin D levels at the same time as brain fog and a desire to isolate from low thyroid levels. Combine those with PTSD symptoms and it's easy to understand why someone would think their PTSD symptoms are improved after taking vitamin d supplements.

This is one of my favorite streams. It still amazes me that (even Tom) believes that letters behind someone's name make them credible. At the end, Tom keeps saying "certified" and "professional". I'm guessing these are "trigger words" that entise people into making a choice. Going to "professionals" for every problem we have is how we ended of with this Western medicine militant state in the first place.

He talks about changing our eating habits as if we make our food choices in a vacuum. When my kids were very small, we ate home cooked, simple healthy foods. Then they got into school and activities and I had to head back to work (and there are more household chores than just food prep and clean-up). We didn’t go overboard with the activities, but it shrank the amount of time I had for food prep. Rightly or wrongly, that’s how it is.

I have done extensive research and I have not yet found cases where a wholefood plant based diet has caused issues. I really believe that the issue that generates bad reps of vegan diets is that the term describes what you're not eating but it does not say what you do eat, ie. a wholefood plant based diet is vegan while a vegan isn't necessarily wholefood plant based and that is a major nuance.

I had some serious gut issues........I highly recommend anyone with the same problem to start with one simple thing. Start your day with oatmeal. Not pre packaged. 1/2 cup whole steelcut oats........cooked....add lots of cinnamon. Top with Walnuts.....pumpkin seeds and 1/4 cup of berries. The gut looooves this stuff. Eventually start adding some brown or wild rice.......Just a 1/2 cup per meal........slowly add in some black beans or lentils...just a bit at a time. Just eat real food!!! Meats and plants.

At 32:05, wheat starch is mostly broken down to glucose. Table sugar (sucrose) is a disaccharide, which is one molecule of glucose and one molecule of fructose. Fructose is mostly processed in the liver. So gram for gram, wheat starch breaks down to more glucose than table sugar.

everybody have their own way of seeing it based upon on what resources they have concluded their phylosophy. to the point where some see all sorts of grains as einkorn excludes are fuel for inflamation when the others have no problem with including gluten in your diet. the bttom line of it all is that you have to make your research and go right to where they went so you can draw your own conclusions. like looking into gut histology anatomy and biochemistry.

First off… I love the little status bar below the vid letting us know what section of the talk we are on… *chefs kiss* Second: my mom lost 25 lbs and is reversing pre-diabetes on a gundry style diet, whereas it wasn’t a good fit for me. I’ve been sort of on a modified AIP because of multiple food sensitivities. I’m definitely hoping to be able to add more veggies as the paleo, very meat focused diet is just boring for me at this point. But to Hymans point, diets really are so individual… what’s working for my mom was really sub optimal for me.

Love Dr. Mark Hyman and his story on how he got into it.... but this ideal is now mainstream and everyone who's into nutrition and health knows the body is all connected. I'm still left wondering why Western medicine won't accept this and make the system easier to diagnose chronic conditions. It's been 4 years now, and I still have unexplained changes which happened to my body and stopped my dance career. The only area which has actually helped is my Naturopath.

I'm always encouraging my friends to be more proactive about their health. Easier said than done. For some change is hard and requires work. Sometimes people don't want to put in the work. I choose to put in the work now, with the resources I have. I feel doing something is better than doing nothing.

What a very interesting interview. Maybe we should all look to the pur man in India. I’m a German, 76 bear young women, and have leaned a lot from India about food. Simple it was before western lifestyle enternd the country. Less good food, every day sweating, and try not to be greedy. Stay healthy. Greetings from🇩🇪

Far Eastern Medicine has always had a “whole body” approach to medicine and health. It’s quite fantastic. I was in Korea in my 20’s in the army. I never learned too much about it until the end of my second tour. It works. What is your opinion on ginseng?

I usually only watch the videos like David Goggins or the motivational/story telling interviews. Yet I watched this one cause I’m very sick right now and even with anti-biotics it has fucked me up, and I would and currently still do eat fast food once to twice a day and that’s it. Now I’m on a mission to lose weight by eating healthy again.

Hey man I started off with GoalCast and Goggins, and still use them. But watch these impact theory and health theory episodes. They are mind altering. Watch the 2 impact theories on David Goggins. They are phenomenal. And kick the fast food, you figure you already know what it tastes like so you're not missing anything you've never had. Your body will thank you! I'm glad you're here and branching out, this channel has literally dominated my negative thought patterns and pushed me towards the path of greatness.
