For people who want a summary in the absence of subtitles: - A fisherman gave this one to him, so he returned it to the water so we could see what it looks like in its natural habitat. Normally, it would be attached to the rocks with the little bulbs he zoomed in on. - When a sea cucumber is attacked, it ejects its organs as a defense mechanism, so this one is already weakened from having tossed up its organs. In the wild, apparently they can recover after ejecting their organs in about two months - This specimen is still on the small side for this animal. They can grow up to 80cm long, but they're relatively rare on Masaru's island - The Japanese name for it is "plum tree blossom"-type sea cucumber because the outside bits look (somehow?) like tons of ume flowers - He cut it in half, and is going to dehydrate the other half in a different video, but it'll take a bit to prepare - He boiled it twice to get rid of as much of the saponin as possible. The first time with cooking sake to reduce the smell. It got much more solid after boiling, but it was still squishy - He removed the warts because apparently they don't taste like anything in particular - Apparently, there's stories that people way back in the day would put the saponin that came out of sea cucumbers into pools of water to kill fish and catch them, and he said he'd like to try that some day, but it might not be possible. The saponin "doesn't have a negative impact on humans" (according to Masaru's testing on.... himself) - The karaage didn't taste bad, but it was sort of like "goopy seawater." He'd eaten it before, boiled and as sashimi, and that was better. - The ajillo was okay, but the "lining" (which is eaten as a delicacy in some places, apparently) was pretty good, and tasted similar to the sort of frilly outside part on a scallop, but the best-tasting part of the ajillo was the mushrooms

I am still going trying to figure out wtf this is!
Masaru really takes “sea food” to another level. I’d be asking what the hell is that is why the hell would you want to eat it, haha. I’d almost be fooled into thinking it was a melon lol it kind of looked like a pineapple. I’m trying to gauge his reaction on whether it was good or not... but I just can’t tell lol. He didn’t seem super impressed by it. If that’s the case, I can see why a tube of goo might not make great food! 😆
@Ryan_gogaku2 жыл бұрын
He said basically that it doesn't taste bad per se, but it was sort of like "goopy seawater," which was not particularly enticing. The last time he ate it, he had it boiled and as sashimi, and that was better, so he decides that frying it wasn't a great idea. For the ajillo that he made, he said it was okay. The "lining" was pretty good, and tasted similar to the sort of frilly outside part on a scallop, but the best-tasting part of the ajillo was the mushrooms, haha.
@DKarkarov2 жыл бұрын
To add even more detail, other than the part he described as "goopy seawater" he basically said it had no flavor. Clearly he felt the veg dish was best.... because of the veges. I doubt leaving the cucumber out would have impacted his enjoyment of the dish.

I love how he warns people with trypophobia in many of his videos. I have it and some images totally gross me out. It's so weird to be revolted by a mere picture, but it gets me every time.
First, it was SO GOOD to hear you speak Japanese- my ability to both speak and understand is pretty poor now (it's been 20 years since I studied) but I still recognized some words and phrases... Second, you are far more culinarily daring than I will EVER be- GAMBARIMASHITA NE!!
I follow you from Italy and I love your videos for the culture so different from mine with which they are pervaded. After all, I am in love with Japan and its culture. Our cuisine is also totally different but I like to see how fascinating distances are. But today, when you mentioned Princess Mononoke, I exploded with joy!😂

I also have a strange fondness for recognizing this his speech is less smooth and gentle when he says the words in english..I am sure just the nature of dialect, but it also seems telling about the differences in culture because we have a tendency to be more blunt emotionally when speaking
