Pastor, thank you for these teachings/podcasts. They are helpful to me in my walk with Christ. I pastor a small church. I have been pastoring for almost 45 years now. As you know, as a pastor/teacher you are always feeding other people and if not diligent, can fail to feed yourself. Your program is one that feeds my soul. God bless you. Also, I am also working my way through your book Consider the Lilies. Prayers for you and your ministry. Stan Payne

"Wisdom has its limits, but fear of God is the ultimate virtue." Great point on emphasizing the fear of God and reverence for who God is over a dependence on our own wisdom.

Though the information is excellent, one thing is essential: the host and how he channels the podcast is very important. Johnny has done a fantastic job; I wish these were over an hour long. There is so much information that I would like to continue to listen to.

It seems like you aren’t feeling well. Not by anything you said or did, but by the way you look. I will be praying for you, that everything is okay and that I’m wrong. You don’t look bad, don’t get me wrong, you just look like something is wrong. I pray The Lord heal & comfort you. God bless you.

I really enjoyed the dialogue @ 5 min on Wisdom. It is very easy for us to fall into the trap of our own "Wisdom" and OUR Will vice submitting to God's Will and striving for God's Will to become our Will. To be fully aligned with God's Will. I think though, that we can also fall into this sort of thrashing loop of paralysis of over analyzing EVERY decision in the lens of "Am I doing God's Will", does God want me to go to the store? Does God want me to do "X"..... if you WALK in the Spirit, you have to TRUST God. You can not decouple Trust from Faith. One can not exist without the other. So, that Wisdom we develop by being deep in the Scripture, Trusting the Lord, striving to be aligned with God's Will, NOT the WORLD...... I wish there was an easy "canned" answer, but there is not. As you say, ONLY God knows. We must trust in that and lean on God. I love the take Prof Klassen put out Be a good Steward of your life! I love that. We have to be a good steward of ALL God gives us, that includes our life.

I love Ecclesiastes. 😊 One reason (among many) why I love Ecclesiastes is due to the Hebrew word hebel, which the KJV translates as "vanity" (and "vanity of vanities"): 1. In Ecclesiastes, hebel is a term that is crucial in helping us understand the main meaning of the entire book, yet the meaning of hebel is difficult to pin down. Often hebel seems as elusive as the shifting sands of the Negev. The benefit (or should I say gain a la Ecc 1:3) in this elusiveness is it provokes varied theological and philosophical reflection. 2. This elusiveness across multiple levels (e.g. linguistic, existential) may very well have been by design from the author of Ecclesiastes, or Qohelet, who was either Solomon or a Solomonic figure, in order to achieve a heightened and nuanced artistry for the book. In any case, I find Ecclesiastes to be a very intellectually sophisticated work of art. 3. The Hebrew word hebel in Ecclesiastes literally means "breath" or "puff of air" or "vapor". Cf. Cain and Abel where the Hebrew word for Abel (habel/hebel) is etymologically related to hebel. Abel's life in this world was but a breath, "like mist/vapor that appears for a little while, then vanishes" (Jas 4:14). 4. Hebel is an onomatopoeia. Like "sigh" in English. Cf. Paul's creation "groans" in Rom 8:22f. 5. As some or many biblical scholars have argued, the apostle Paul makes use of the idea of hebel in Romans. For starters, Rom 8:20 refers to creation subjected to "futility" (CSB, ESV, NASB) or "frustration" (NIV) or "curse" (NLT) or similar. (Indeed some translations primarily translate hebel in Ecclesiastes as "futility".) In Rom 8, the apostle Paul makes a callback to Ecclesiastes where life "under the sun" - which refers to postlapsarian life, that is, life after the Fall - has been "made crooked and cannot be straightened" (Ecc 1:15). This is why creation and the children of God "groan" as we "eagerly await" our final or ultimate "adoption" and "redemption" along with the new heavens and the new earth, when Edenic paradise is regained, when creation is restored better than ever, when the crooked is straightened out at last, and all this by the Lord himself. We long for the eschaton. 6. There are at least three senses in hebel: A. Time of life (under the sun) B. Quality/characteristic of life (under the sun) C. Meaning of life (under the sun) As such, we might translate hebel along these three senses as follows: A. Fleeting B. Futile C. Befuddling, baffling A Ephemeral B. Empty, errant C Enigmatic, elusive A. Insubstantial B. Incongruous C. Inscrutable A Mist-like B. Mirage-like C. Mystifying, mysterious A. Passing B. Pointless C. Puzzling, perplexing A. Vanishing, vaporous B. Vain C. Vexing 7. If I had to pick a single English word to capture hebel, I would opt for a more literal translation. Such as: breath, vapor, mist, mirage. Among these, I'd tend toward mist. Mist, merest mist, mystifying mist, all is mist, etc. 8. Breath and vapor are also fine choices. Robert Alter translates hebel as breath in his Hebrew Bible. The Evangelical Heritage Version translates hebel as vapor.

Did Solomon turn completely apostate, with his heart being turned to his wives' gods or did he repent at the end of his life and return to the Lord? 🥺 I've always believed that he repented but I've had it preached that the lesson we learn from him is of a man who's turned completely apostate and loses his place with the Lord
