Edmunds Senior Reviews Editor Mark Takahashi had the opportunity to drive the all-new 2019 Audi A6 in and around Napa Valley, California. In an era when SUVs are dominating auto sales, Mark contends that the A6 remains relevant for shoppers who still value performance and handling. See what he considers the high and low points for the new A6.
Q: How much does the 2019 Audi A6 cost?
A: Prices start at $59,985.
Q: What engines are available?
A: At the moment, only a 335-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 is offered, but we expect a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine to join the lineup later.
Q: What does the A6 compete with?
A: It competes with the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
Q: What's the big difference with this new A6?
A: Technology! There's a lot of it, but it's not the easiest to use, unfortunately.

I had a 2013 2.0TDI A6 Avant when I lived in Bremen. It’s no where near as fancy as this one. 17” wheels, 190hp, no fog lights, no S Line, cloth manual adjust seats, plastic dash. But it had manual transmission. Pretty fun car to drive. Cheap to maintain. Cheap on gas. These cars are so luxurious in North America. In Germany they are just normal cars.

Very good and professional presentation. Your “ traveling” shot in the backseat...never see that done before.... such a little thing but incredibly effective production move , nice :) Here in Colorado we have Audi SUV .... skis, bikes and all the stuff for this lifestyle. I’m sure I would appreciate the enhanced driving performance of the A6 ... but I have to say Audi has done an incredible job on their SUV’s, they really do drive well in all conditions.

Like many of you im bent out of shape at the disappearance of buttons. There is something so satisfying about a well made knob switch or button. That turn with just the right heft and feedback, The switch with that notch you just wanna keep flipping, and the button with that depress kick back that feels just right. Now we get a flat screen with a buzz if we are lucky. SHIT!

Even after using the previous gen A6 for 2 years i'm still looking down on media/settings buttons because i never remember what and where are they placed. On a BMW that problem was non existent after a week of use. Touch screen on the new version is a much safer version (no need to look close to armrest area for a button) and probably a lot easier to get used to.

This is a pretty accurate review. I put 1k km on a Audi A6 TDI European rental. I loved the virtual cockpit, which lets you keep your eyes focused on the road while going through all the roundabouts. The ride was smooth, if not a bit bouncy on wavy roads due to the large wheels. The transmission was effortless except for delays at low speeds after the start/stop re-engaged. Biggest complaint is the climate control touchscreen being too distracting and the view while riding shotgun. In shotgun, everything is angled away from you: side mirrors, rear mirror, and the center console. Other complaints, although they may only apply to Euro rentals, is that the seats were manual and there was no backup camera. Solid car but I was expecting some of these functions to be standard on a car like this.

You could always buy one after someone turns it in after 2 years with 26000 miles for about $40,000. Use the money from selling your current car for a down payment and you’ve got yourself a nice “like new” A6 for about $550 per month.

Or you can lease it for 36 months and give it back. Cars are becoming far too complex to own. The last car I paid off is my “beater” 2008 TSX (shown in profile). I’ve been leasing since.

I’ve got the current a4 with virtual cockpit and the larger centre screen. It’s all nonsense. Once the novelty wears off with the fact it’s digital you leave the virtual cockpit on one setting. Then with the centre knob and screen you spend ages looking at the screen and then using the Knob and small buttons to navigate through huge menus looking for a few setting for the audio or sat nav. At least on the a4 you have some physical buttons for the heating. Having AC and fan settings hidden away on software to they can fuck right off I fancy the new a6 but having these two touch screens and then having to pay again (on the U.K. spec at least) for the virtual cockpit is a no no for me. These things will be a nightmare for a used car buy. Any of these fail and you’ll be looking at £1000s outside warranty and you won’t be able to use the car until it’s fixed. I’ve had Audi’s for over 20 years, since my dad had to 80 as a company car. Recently bought the Mrs a xc90 and I fancy a v90 or v60 next. But even these new volvos are like the Audi’s now. Big screen no physical buttons!!

Caught most of this on Edmunds (it's hard finding time for video reviews as well as finding space, since my wife's protestations prevent me from hearing). I think I don't lke this car because of touch screen business taken to the extreme. Most important: 1. RIDE -- my wife recently bought a new Subaru Legacy, which CR singled out for its superior ride over others in its class ($3500). Bummer. It registers every tiny bump and piece of road disrepair. Her 2007 Mazda 6 had a softer ride as did my '02 Lincoln LS. It sounds lik the Mercedes has the most shock-absorbent ride for a trip to N. Canada (I could never survive the trip in her "hard" Legacy which isn't even fun to drive. 2. APPLE-friendly media system. You said (I think) that the Mercedes is lagging in media development. No problem if it handles my iphone, iPod, and Mac laptop. Otherwise, very listenable, cogent presentation.

Problem is, all the extra ride height and clearance make for worse fuel economy. And the cold reality is, the vast majority of people who own some kind of blahblah-UV don't ever haul anything or anyone in them. So they're purely to placate drivers who want to sit up higher, since modern cars drive wonderful - not that idiots would know, they're too busy buying all the high profit margin crossovers and whatnot. Gotta be all those commercials of them driving in the forest through the snow, or putting a kayak on the roof that basically no one will do. Like it or hate it , touchscreens are the future.Sure , physical buttons are easier to use while driving, and I do wish they left a few more physical buttons , but you can't deny the quality of the car, the exterior and especially the interior quality ,and that's what you pay for in a car like this. This is a quality car , so If you're an Audi , or German car hater look elsewhere, like your local Toyota, Hyundai , GM , or Dodge dealer !

I can't get over people complaining about the touch screen when you don't have to use them while driving. U have steering wheel controls plus u can't tell the what u want it to do(voice control). So please quit with this touch screen crap. I av the Q5 and use the steering wheel controls for almost everything.

The US car market is just sad! Many are comparing this to a Lexus, Honda and even a Kia smh. Most say they want nice but yet cheap but don’t realize that cheap yet luxurious isn’t a thing. The fit and finish, handling/stability just isn’t comparable.

NHTSA: Cell phones are a distraction and should be illegal to use in the car. Govt: Cell phone use is illegal because it takes your eyes off the road. Audi: We installed 172 touchscreens buttons throughout the cabin, most of which are so far below the line of sight that you may as well be reading a book.

Even for carrying electric pianos, amps, equipment, I wouldn't be caught dead in an SUV or any similar truck. I realize we live in a rock n roll, C&W culture, but some of us remember "Swing" and the freedom of a walking 4/4 underneath a Charlie Parker solo flight. That's why good "cars" (not trucks, jeeps, or gussied-up station wagons) must not be neglected. (If that makes me "elite," I'll just have to live with the condemnatory label.)

Audi needs more visual differentiation between their models. A3, A4, A6, A8 look very similar and to the average person you can't tell them apart. The A5 & A7 also look a like.

That MMI actually debuted in the Q8 not the A8. Aside from that I have had this car for a little over a year and you get used to the mmi and eventually you don’t have to take your eyes off the road. Plus if you’re going to be changing the driving mode that often you can program the shortcut button on the steering wheel to change it

Dear sir, I really like the vide; however, I’m disappointed that your choice of poor grammar. The center stack has been completely RE-DONE( re-designed, is entirely new, Audi has developed a new center stack.)You are dressed business casual and appear well educated and the video is for a high class car. So I would appreciate a high class video. This is just one example. 😢

Cg3 on a luxury sedan? What does that really tell you? I’m not a fan of performance figures for cars not designed for outright performance.
@Cgee3
@Cgee3 5 жыл бұрын
Alan Bowers it’s every bit as much sport sedan as it is luxury. This vehicle packs a turbo charged v6 with awd running low profile tires. The suspension and drivetrain were all designed to deliver a sporty drive when desired. Performance test data will quantify how a vehicle performs. It’s as simple as that. Yes, there will be a sportier S6 and RS7. I look forward to seeing those!
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP 5 жыл бұрын
@@Cgee3 quantify? So you can say it's incrementally quicker around some random racetrack or drag strip than a Mercedes or BMW or something? Again what does that tell you? I'd want to know more about how steering feels on center, how the damping and suspension accommodate to both back road driving as well as broken up highways. How the engine feels torquey or peaky and what pros and cons of either are with respect to a given driver attitude. I couldnt care less if it can go 0-60 in 5.1947 seconds or rip .8932 lateral G. Stopping distance is really the only metric that should be even somewhat relevant since it pertains to safety, but again most cars are so close that it's not even a consideration.
@Cgee3
@Cgee3 5 жыл бұрын
Alan Bowers how a vehicle drives is important also. Test data obviously doesn’t tell all. It’s a basic measure of performance. Most people measure how “fast” a vehicle is by it’s 0-60 and 1/4 mile times. You may not care but many do. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Cg3 of course many people do, that’s why we see this proliferation occurring. But those people are quite silly and only really interested in spec sheet comparisons or internet vitriol. Actual buyers don’t care and will choose based on the millions of other more relevant aspects.

The glaring omission of so many other competitors is starting to become annoying with these reviewers. Yes it competes with the 5 Series and E Class. It can also be crossed shopped with the Volvo S60/S90, Cadillac CTS/CT6, Jaguar XF, Lexus GS/ES, and Genesis G80.
