I have an old Skoda Octavia which didn't have Carplay on the entertainment system so I bought a 7 inch Portable Car Stereo with Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto,IPS Touchscreen Music Player, Bluetooth MirrorLink, Navigation so I now have Car Play. It's an independent unit which I put on the dash. Only cost €80 where a built in unit would have cost me in the region of €400. I can simply move it to another car or whatever I want to so win win. Now anyone can have Carplay no matter how old the vehicle is.

Yep, they've been around for a while now. Nice cheap add on. I added a 9" screen to my Hummer h3 that also has wireless carplay/Android Auto. Bought it in AliExpress for $240... But it's awesome, very high resolution system and installing it was relatively simple and it looks factory.

I wonder why Apple insists on having the base applications on the opening page, regardless as to whether the user uses them or not? It is the one reason why I do not use Apple CarPlay. For example, if you don’t use Apple Music, why should you be forced to have an icon on your screen? It serves no purpose right?

You can customize them in the CarPlay settings on the Phone… just change them to the order you want, put Music at the end. Or better, if you don’t use Apple Music you can just… delete the app

Thanks for this. I’m an apple user but see the benefits of android. But the marketing works… my iPad, Apple Watch and air tags all dictate I’ll replace my iPhone with another iPhone.

Love apple CarPlay but one question I have is how do I make it alert me to new incoming text messages. I can send texts wonderfully, but when I receive a text I receive absolutely no announcement that I have a new incoming text…. Any ideas?

It'll pop up on the screen momentarily.... And it'll show a red dot on your messages app. But beyond that, I'm not sure. I'm actually an Android user lol

go into settings and notifications should be an announce notifications option. Might not be on by default some people might not want awkward texts read out loud with others in the car.

Hi Ed, I just purchased a 2018 Nissan Leaf and I notice that blutooth audio works very well Pandora, TIDAL etc... but when using any music app through Apple CarPlay it contionusly stutters. Very frustrating, any ideas? I'm new to CarPlay but not to the iPhone. Is this a known problem? I'm hoping there is a simple solution, audio is a big deal for me and if I can't get audio working then CarPlay is pretty much worthless to me. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks

Unfortunately this is a fairly common problem with Apple CarPlay. The problem **usually** stems from the phone itself, and not from the head unit. The only thing I could suggest is to make sure all of your updates are done, and maybe try closing all the background running applications before connecting to CarPlay. Another thing that sounds non-intuitive but may actually work is trying a different USB cord. Finally the last thing I would suggest is to try different music playback apps... Try VLC media player

That depends on your vehicle.... But try to find sound settings. Or, try turning up the volume WHILE Siri is talking.

Why are you doing an Apple Carplay tutorial if you don't use Apple (which you mention more than once)!?

Because despite the fact that I don't have an iPhone, I still know more about Apple carplay and iPhones/iOS then a LOT of people who own iPhones. I was a PC/cell phone technician from 1997 to 2016, and I'm still very technically adept. Sure I don't know as much about carplay as I do Android auto, but I've still got a lot of helpful tips here and the comments and likes show it.

It's all by voice recognition. So not really any more dangerous than talking on the phone or talking to a passenger

You can certainly make calls with Siri. But when you're in a call, I don't believe Siri works until you hang up
