Have you ever heard of getting rid of your buccal fat? It’s the newest cosmetic procedure that’s been gaining traction all over TikTok and social media over the past few months. The new beauty standard is slimming down your face so you can show off your high cheekbones and slim side profile. People are getting this done after seeing multiple celebrities with significantly different faces - mainly Lea Michele and Bella Hadid who both used to have fuller cheeks. Just like most K-pop idols who started in the industry with plump cheeks but now have a V-shaped jaw line to fit the Asian beauty standard. The downside of everyone getting this procedure done is that losing volume in your face can make you age a lot faster and no one’s really talking about the cons. Yeah quite literally. Like ngl, I am sorta pretty to an extent, but I generally look fairly ugly in day to day life because I have short hair and wear hoodies all the time, whcih are considered unattractive. I will not seem pretty unless I dress more femininely. So this also has to do with the way we present ourselves. Learn your body type and what makes u look more attractive. Start taking poses whenever you see some good lighting going on outside and take pics. People don't seem to get it that you CAN become beautiful without plastic surgery, and smth as simple as how u carry yourself can change everything

What makes this trend worse is that you can literally just use make up to achieve the same look without it affecting your face for the rest of your life and then winding up with hollow cheeks in the future.
@TheAwesomes2104
@TheAwesomes2104 Жыл бұрын
If you just want to make up for what gets flattened on camera, makeup can definitely achieve that effect, but contouring wasn't ever meant to look great in real life because the lighting is always changing. Me and my friends in highschool had a term for the intense contour we'd see people wearing in public, lovingly referred to as "poopoo smudge." But intense contouring can be washed off, surgery can't, so I'd far rather someone use super temporary makeup to achieve these for-camera looks than actually go get parts of their face chopped off/out. But even still, people seem to forget that these alterations were created to counteract the effects of the camera and not for irl looks. Anything other than mild contouring just doesn't look right the second you leave your vanity mirror and walk outside, into a store's lighting, or even another room because it was never designed to.

It's upsetting because I have a lot of empathy for celebrities like Bella Hadid, Dove Cameron and Kylie Jenner for growing up in Hollywood, not just seeing it via media but actually being the media and the incredible pressure that brings. But they all deny the extent of the work they've had done despite it being obvious. They dont look anything like themselves, and they don't even look like their own family members or biological children in Kylies case. They're perpetuating advanced unrealistic beauty standards despite knowing the pressure it brings.

Im kind of the same. Some surgeries are mandatory. Especially if the person have deformed jaw, nose, and or eyes that needs to be fixed or else it'll cause a long term health damage. It's understandable then. The only effy thing when people get plastic surgeries for me, is when they deny. 😅 And calls it 'natural beauty,' like WHAT?!
@LotusesGalaxyOcean
@LotusesGalaxyOcean Жыл бұрын
Yes. I would add one tip.... these defined looks are often made possible not only with buccal fat removal but cheek/jaw/chin implants. And this just like buccal fat removal can be spotted often. Typically you look for two things.... First do those areas look hard or stretched without the normal proportion of fat? That is abnormal and often a sign of an implant. Second, look at their face shape and proportions. Humans rarely have an absurdly sharp chin, jaw or cheeks because evolution thinks that's self defeating as it is more breakable. You tend to get more of a Henry Cavill than a Timothy Chamalet in nature. I say all this because I think people have forgotten what is and isn't natural.

Seeing the kpop idol comparisons is so jarring. They used to all have different face shapes and personal styles. You can even see in the first pictures they’re much more candidly happy, while in the second picture they have been trained on how to appear for the camera. Not to smile because it makes lines on your face. This is genuinely chilling. Some of them even had darker skin tones previously, but used some kind of whitening treatment or makeup to fit the colorist beauty standard that says Asian people who are darker are ugly.

The buccal fat in one's face is what determines how quickly one begins to look old. If you get it removed or generally have a thin face, you will get folds in your face sooner. So I'm pretty glad I've got a 'moon face'. And to be honest, having the buccal fat removed makes people look weird, because it's not what the body intended you to look like and one quickly looks unnatural. I personally think it makes people look creepy.

Ozempic was briefly mentioned at 6:15, but to anyone who’s thinking about it for “fast and extreme weight loss,” that is NOT typical. You might lose around 5 pounds, but that’s because it dulls your sense of taste so you lose your appetite (not like with covid, but kind of like when you have a cold and your head is really congested), and you get nauseous with gut cramps when you eat. You can also get egg burps and bad farts (luckily I didn’t.) But another thing about this hype is that it’s causing a shortage and people who actually need it for diabetes and pre-diabetes can’t get it, so vain selfish jerks are causing real harm to people who already have a serious medical condition. At least carving up your face only hurts yourself.

Honestly as a person with a naturally gaunt face/ cheekbones (my derm thought my cheek hollows were hyperpigmentation), we end up aging so quickly bc of it. Every face type has benefits and setbacks, we really shouldn’t be actively pursuing a whole nother facetype than ours bc it’ll just end up looking off. I definitely notice this procedure looking… weird on people like dove Cameron who have naturally small, full faces, but I also notice it on folks with already long faces like lea Michelle and Bella hadid because it immediately ages them. No judgement to anyone tho, if they like it I love it

I live in S Korea. I am very petite, whiter than sour cream, have very round features, the ‘v’ jaw, and a ‘small face’ (a big deal in Korea). Living here i get compliments on my appearance all the time and people constantly point these features out on me. I can’t help but feel shocked every time. In the US I’ve always been told I’m too pale, short, and round to fit the beauty ideals there. I am fine with that, but after living here my opinion on my own image has shifted. When my friends here lament about being too tall, having high cheekbones, strong or sharp jaws, tan skin, and big lips I’m like girl, you need to go to LA. I have to explain to people that in the West the ideal is like Kim Kardashian or Angelina Jolene. It just goes to show basing yourself worth on beauty ideals, ESPECIALLY trends, is a moot point. You can be the hottest person in your city, and in another country you’re considered meh. You can be the ugliest girl from some rural town and still get snatched up by a modeling agency. Hell, in the last century alone the beauty ideas in America have swung widely from one end of the spectrum to another. Don’t change yourself to fit in, seriously. Work on growth and self acceptance and only make changes for yourself. That’s the best way to age gracefully.

Idk why having such angular features is so sought after. I personally think round faces are so cute, and some of my favorite celebrities have those very soft features (Emma Stone, Diane Agron, Emilia Clarke, Alicia Silverstone, Judy Garland, and Zoey Deschanel to name a few). It just doesn’t work for everyone, and looks downright unnatural when they have a more rounded bone structure from the beginning.
@LotusesGalaxyOcean
@LotusesGalaxyOcean Жыл бұрын
I very much agree. I think everyone is evolving into clones and it is quite creepy. And the bone structure is really a major issue. I naturally have strong cheekbones and a jaw a bit like this current beauty standard, but my face still looks nothing like these celebs. I still have a healthy layer of fat over my cheeks and and jaw and face. That sharp chiseled jaw look is almost always cheek and jaw and chin implants because the natural bone structure of the face tends to have some smooth padding over the bones if it is natural. I say this to clarify that the celeb look is the look of plastic surgery. 90% of the time it is not one found in nature. You can tell who is natural and not because those that are it is nowhere near the crazy unnatural extremes. People just don't know what that looks like. I watch Lorry Hill who covers this, which how I got familiar spotting it. Just remind people that idolizing this is like idolizing plastic surgery barbie or ken.

Some fillers never fully dissolve, and if not done properly and in certain areas can migrate. I used to want a lot of plastic surgeries but then I started asking myself 'could I miss and long for my old face in case they fuck it up?' (there's always the possibility) and the answer is usually yes. And if I can long for my now-face then I'm capable of learning to love it as it is

I feel like 'buccal fat' is one of those oddly specific terms our generation will remember, like when we're in our 80s or 90s and the term comes up, we'll be the only one in the room having flashbacks about it. "What's wrong with grandma?" "It's okay sweety, they were living in different times"

I wish you would've included the bit where Dr. Gary Linkov mentions that it isn't always the buccal fat pad that makes your face look round! He mentioned it in one of the buccal fat videos and said that removing it might then make your face appear unbalanced, and not at all like the client getting buccal fat removed hoped it would. He also said that the fat pad is super close to a bunch of nerves, and the chances of doing some type of nerve damage during surgery are high and that's why he himself no longer does it! I also think it's so sad and dangerous that such young people are hopping on the trend and getting what is pretty much an irrevesible procedure to change their faces. I have very round cheeks, but my face went through a pretty noticeable change after I turned 20! I lost my "baby fat" that I was carrying in my face and while I still look extremely young in my late 20s, I do clearly look like an adult. If these people had been patient they might've seen an even more drastic change in their faces, but our culture is so saturated with the need for immediate results.

Man... with all the pressure of beauty standards, especially in Asia, I can't help but say that everybody really "looks the same". This disheartens me to say that because growing up I would often hear the stereotype of Asians looking the same. Obviously that is absurd because everybody looks different and I always took it as an racial offence(I'm Asian myself) but with the whole colorism, and the pressure to conform to beauty standard in east Asia... I can't help but say that everyone really does look the same.

it's honestly disappointing how drastically trends changed since I was a kid. It went from stuff you could do with makeup like thin, then full, and then thin eyebrows to surgically changing your face. I'm sure if it doesn't exist already surgeons are gonna be rushing to coming up with some type of injections to fill peoples faces once having a pointy face is out of trend. I know to each their own but it's the constant promoting of ideals that literally require surgery that is going way over board.

I still remember when I first started getting into Kpop idols and Asian dramas. The further down the rabbit hole of interest became, the more I started to notice this issue. I know that people, specifically in this case Asian celebs, get cosmetic surgery for various reasons but seeing the drastic difference in appearance was a bit of a culture shock. While I will admit that such desires are no different in the US, seeing a lot of these people change what seems to be not just their face but also their natural head shape and/or structure into that of a living doll is kind of unsettling to say the least. And while I understand that it is their choice to do so, I find it frightening that a lot of these people are taking that leap for something that is both a temporary fix and costly to your health. It's just like what Edvasian points out in the video, some of these changes may affect the person more than they think in the long run. I just hope that such trends are not taken too far.

I've heard that K-pop idols kinda need to get certain plastic surgeries if they want to debut, so I wonder how much of it actually is their choice :(
@ruum9
@ruum9 Жыл бұрын
@Grapeyard I've seen a few ex idols talk about how when they were trainees, they'd always get taught "oh your nose looks a certain way you need to change it" or "oh you should get double eyelids" etc, in more recent years beauty has become a standing point in kpop, these idols HAVE to comply with the standards and the idols who don't fit at debut will start progressively changing their features during their career, just to please the public, so there's no way it's actually their choice but definitely the agency's choice. Also we know that idols are debuting younger and younger now , what worries me is that they're gonna get PS and alter features that aren't fully developed yet, causing them problems when they grow up and their face changes.

Some of my biggest insecurities have become trends recently too which makes me feel so off, I've had eyebags and dimples my entire life and I see people giving them purposefully now! (through makeup and some people have gotten cheek piercings to leave a indent like dimples) These are both things that people have made fun of in the past and now seeing people try and achieve these things just feels weird..

If people want to do trends, it’s usually whatever, but I can’t stand it when that trend takes resources from people who NEED IT TO FUNCTION. A person shouldn’t have to worry about not getting medication for their chronic illness because someone wanted to do something unhealthy for something that is most likely temporary.

I feel as though people could potentially be a lot happier if they didn’t spend tons of money to fit a trend. It’s called a trend for a reason. First it’s new and cool, and shortly it becomes a thing of the past. Buying clothing is one thing, but actually getting surgery to fit an aesthetic is crazy to me. Part of me is very glad I’m not on any social media because of it lmao

As someone’s who’s soon to be 41, I was around in the time when everyone was obsessed with being super skinny, and let me say, as a teenager or early 20s , fine, but as I’ve gotten older it doesn’t half age you (and I mean being unnaturally thin, I don’t mean those where it’s their natural body weight) I’m by no means ‘fat’ now I’m a small U.K. size 12. Euro 40 which is an American 8 I believe. And that’s just where I comfortably hover. So pretty average. These buccal fat removals will be regretted when they’re older as the fat in that area can’t be replaced! A lot of these surgeries we haven’t seen long term results. But on the other hand, each to their own! But we need to remember one size doesn’t fit all.

It's kinda funny how in Korea it's a beauty standard to have slim face and then some idols trend because of their "cute cheeks", example: Winter in the "Step back" fancam, Jennie for rocking both sexy (eyes) and cute (cheeks) styles, Han just overall for looking like squirrel ect, Soobin by his streechy skin on chubby cheeks ect.

I have naturally prominent cheekbones and sure they can look good in pictures, but it’s really easy to go into “middle aged Disney lady villain” territory lol. I almost never contour for this reason. Appreciate what you have, and if you can’t, try to find less permanent and more empowering ways to feel better about your body. Or maybe just get off TikTok, have coffee with a friend, clean up your local park, something like that?

i find the whole buccal fat removal trend really disturbing. because with the whole thing about it looking gaunt, i don't think that's a coincidence. i think it's possible that people _want_ to look sickly, and it's especially troubling because of the whole theory going around that the trend is shifting back to ultra-skinny being the beauty standard. i don't think that's a coincidence at all; it just lines up too well.
